Cloud file storage

Just wondering if you're using any file storage in the cloud services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Skydrive, etc. and if so, what your experience is like?

 

I'm currently using a combination of Google Drive and Dropbox. I prefer Dropbox as it has a better desktop client (nice right-click options that integrate well) and it appears to sync more responsively than Google Drive's desktop client.

 

...however Google Drive offers 15 GB for free versus Dropbox's 2 GB free option. ;)

Honestly, I don't really feel a need for it. I use Dropbox to automatically sync photos from my smartphone, but that's pretty much it. Between my Windows and Linux installs I share files using softlinks, and I don't really have anything I'd need to sync between my laptop and my desktop. (The only thing I can think of would be my music library, and I'm less than willing to sync 40+ gigs of mp3s on services that might or might not decide to suspend my account for alleged copyright infringements without even confirming.)

If the need arose, I guess I'd use Dropbox, since it's so simple and so well integrated. I only use Google Drive as far as it got merged with Docs that I use every now and then.

We're working on translating TDFN's content into several languages (German, Dutch, Spanish). I'm trialing a shared spreadsheet in Google Drive/Docs which looks like it will manage the stored translations more gracefully than sharing a Word document using email attachments/Dropbox/Google Drive. So a big thumbs up for that. :)

I use Google Drive to share and edit documents for team projects. I like how team members are immediately notified after a file has been shared on Drive. However, I noticed that all formatting tends to change for Office documents opened on Drive. So if you are planning to share and edit, it's better to create the document directly on Docs rather than Word. Google Drive is a great file storage service, and it will prove useful for storing the translations of TDFN. :)

Well after using Google Drive for several months now I've decided to stop using it. It takes too long to sync and the Windows desktop client just feels unstable. :S

 

Back to Dropbox as it syncs much faster. Upgraded to the pro version too. ^_^

1TB for $10/month. Thats pretty good! However, I would probably never need that much. Even with syncing all my music, pictures, and documents, that only amounts to 5GB. Obviously Dropbox doesn't cover that much, and I wouldn't trust them anyway since they got hacked recently. I use OneDrive, and it syncs pretty well across Win8 machines; however, the Win10 client seems to be broken so I have to use the web app when I'm on my laptop :?.

Obviously Dropbox doesn't cover that much, and I wouldn't trust them anyway since they got hacked recently.

I can understand why you would feel that way, but just to be clear they didn't get hacked directly but rather credentials were stolen from other areas and lists. :? In this day and age with people using the same passwords for many services that shouldn't be overly surprising.

 

I noticed now though that Dropbox has two factor authentication, which is on par with Google accounts now. The thing where they send you an SMS to your mobile phone when you login, just don't lose your mobile! xD

 

 

I use OneDrive, and it syncs pretty well across Win8 machines; however, the Win10 client seems to be broken so I have to use the web app when I'm on my laptop :?.

Let me know if you get that resolved, I was looking at OneDrive when it was known as SkyDrive awhile ago but never got around to trying it out.

So, I'm trying out Copy which gives you 15GB and you can earn up to 25GB more for just five referrals. Although, I don't use that much storage anyway, so I won't bother with that. Also, Copy allows you to migrate all your data from an existing service for you. I have about 5GB in OneDrive, and it was all transfered within a half hour. Also, it seems like it only counts files that are larger than a certain size as it says that only 2GB are used, and I double checked to make sure all my files were there. However, the main reason I'm trying it out was because I'm going back to Linux Mint on my Laptop (was Win10 beta before), and I wanted a service that had a Linux client.

Haven't heard of Copy before, be interesting to see how you go with it. :)

 

I'm stilling using Dropbox on the pro version, am very happy with the speed it syncs on the desktop client. The iOS mobile apps work really well too. Only used 50 GB so far out of the 1 TB limit.

 

If you get the chance, maybe try Dropbox on Linux too, it seems they have a Ubuntu version which should work with Linux Mint:

Hm... maybe. I'm not really a fan of dropbox. It has a dated web client, which could be overlooked if it had sufficient free storage, which for me is around 10GB. If they ever upgrade their free plan, or add a 100GB plan, I might consider it though (I'm fairly certain they used to have the 100GB plan years ago). However, I'm fairly certain by that point, I'll be so used to Copy, I doubt I would want to switch. Also, I would never use 1TB, and even if I did, I couldn't imagine how long it would be to sync all of that data. >_< At any rate, I'm glad you like Dropbox.

I've decided to stop using cloud storage altogether now and cancelled my Pro subscription...

 

The Dropbox desktop client is choking on me now (taking too long to sync and reindex) as I've now reached 236,999 files. I think their servers are throttling me now. Part of the reason I've reached so many files is due to all the galleries I've been storing in there.

 

I tried OneDrive briefly but its desktop client syncing engine was worse than Dropbox.

 

Trying a different approach, BitTorrent Sync. It's not cloud storage, but rather it syncs directly between your devices via LAN/Wi-Fi:

The whole reason I went for cloud file storage in the first place was to keep my laptop and desktop files in sync... in the past I used an external HDD, even though it was a bit cumbersome it was fast and reliable.

Wait... do you get reimbursed for that? If not, why did you cancel now, and instead just make sure you didn't have auto renewal?

Or you could invest in an USB 3.0 flash drive which would solve both of your problems. You can get a good 256 GB one for around $100. BitTorrent Sync does sound like more of what you are looking for though. I am a bit surprised that they have a linux client, I might look into it if I ever run into storage issues.

Yes that's what I meant - I reverted back to the free plan. There's a grace period when you cancel - you still have the Pro benefits until your next renewal date.

Admittedly I'm not a big fan of those because I tend to misplace them. :P

 

Back on topic yeah, will see how I go with BitTorrent Sync - the ideal workflow I'm thinking is to synchronise my Surface Pro 3 with my desktop. Assuming it syncs quickly I should be able to just up and go with my Surface whenever I need to work on Anime Forums on those longer trips ;)

I have the option of using Google Drive on my Chrome book. But I don't use it. Instead I use a 2 TB external drive to store all of my stuff on for future use.

I am too scared to touch them. I prefer to stay incognito and offline with my USB drives. Saves me some time also as some services have terrible connections. If I was to do any cloud storage I would use a foreign one as then it would be harder for someone around me to find it

My wife and I share a 1TB Dropbox account, which we've long used to keep back ups of various projects we're working on, or have worked on, our music collections, photos, and various other files that would be unfortunate to lose to system failure.

 

Beyond that, I previously used OneDrive to sync a small selection of files and portable applications between my old work PC, my laptop, and my home PC. I can't say that I was very fond of OneDrive by any stretch, but using separate services for personal files and work files was an easy way to keep things from ending up where they shouldn't have, in either direction.

Dropbox! Sadly, because I don't have much of a choice. I use Scrivener for writing, and the fact that it breaks things up into a billion tiny files and makes frequent updates causes every other cloud file storage system to sputter, scream, and die spontaneously (taking whatever you were working on with it).
