This may cause me to seem like some sort of grinch. I apologize if that is the case, but this has been kind of bothering me for a while now.

The Creative Corner board on this forum is bogged down with threads that serve no purpose beyond advertising Youtube videos, posted in large part by folks who have displayed no interest in the forum beyond that purpose, who in some cases don't even bother with an introductory thread before they begin their advertising spiel.

Case in point, taken from the first page:

Twenty one threads - that's half of the front page being taken up by people who have never posted outside of their own advertisement threads and/or their own welcome thread.

So --- what's the big deal?

This box provides at-a-glance information regarding what people here are talking about.

It seems like, more often than not these days, it is taken up in large part by "Check out my thing" threads posted, again, by people who have displayed absolutely zero interest in this community. Instead of having topics that are likely to be of interest to the community and worthy of actual discussion being highlighted at the top of the index page, we instead have nonsense that, frankly - based on the average number of replies these threads get - nobody cares about.

In addition to jumbling up the content listed in the New Topics side bar, it also pushes topics that might be of actual interest to folks down amongst a mess of spam threads. Given that this forum often tends to be fairly low activity (which is okay), this means that posts to threads that actually have some degree of substance can take a while - meaning that they can get pushed down far enough that members who don't scroll beyond the first several threads (and could they be blamed, if all of those threads are simply video advertisements?) or beyond the first page of threads won't even see them.

With that in mind, I very strongly request something along the lines of these three options be implemented. There may be better courses of action available, however this is what comes immediately to mind.

1: Prevent members who are under X posts (where X is a small and easily reached number) from making threads in the Creative board, while also removing any threads advertising Youtube channels or videos that are created elsewhere in an attempt to sidestep this.

2: Remove threads located in the Creative board from the Recent Topics side panel.

3: Allow people to advertise their channels and videos without restriction, however limit them to one thread and require that any new videos or content they wish to advertise be placed within that thread, something that is most courteously done in the case of this thread.

Apologies for the rant, but I rather like this place and want it to do well - as such I strongly urge that any and all actions that can be taken to make it more appealing to people passing through be taken. While the impact of this particular bit may admittedly be limited by itself, there are probably a fair number of other such minor improvements that can be made... and little things do add up.

Anyhow, thank you for taking the time to read my ranting.

I agree with you about 90% of the way, in the fact that its starting to get ridiculous with the amount of people who just come on in order to advertise their channels.

However, the simple fact is that it is the creative corner after all. its where your meant to post drawing, stories ideas, and even videos in order to get creative feedback in return. So unfortunately, its kind of one of those things where people shouldn't do it, but can because that's what the section is there for :P

I think the best way to solve the problem would be:

A: make a new section just for youtuber stuff. I know this seems kind of bad at firs, but it would also allow people to talk to one another about things based around youtubing and whatnot rather then just "Check out my channel!" (Btw, I know this will just end up as people posting about checking out their channels, but at least it separates that side of things from the other side which actually requires creative criticism. E.G: my sections on creating a multiverse got buried under that mound of stuff and I don't ever get feedback on it ;-;)

B: As you said, just delete the ones that are literally just "Check out my channel" And add a notice to the section stating to people not to publish anything that's just "Check out my channel"

Easy way to sidestep this, however, is to just amend the rules slightly to state that the privilege to advertise off-site things is reserved solely for members that have spent X amount of time on the forum, have X posts, or something similar along those lines. Alternatively, a simple disclaimer in the rules reading something akin to "Members that do not contribute to the community beyond posting advertisements for off-site content may have their content hidden or their accounts removed at the discretion of the site administration."

I mean, it's true that the section is there for the sake and purpose of showcasing your own works - however it is also true that the site owner and moderators are within their rights to restrict access to that area for people who have abused their access to it.

Beyond that, the issue with trying to cover every single exception, situation, and scenario written out within the site rules is that if you do so, the rules will eventually balloon out into a massive document that nobody will ever read, and will give people the impression that if something isn't explicitly forbidden, it must be okay. "Well, you know, there's nothing in the rules that say I can't post videos of animals being tortured," as an example.

Instead of viewing the rules as chains that bind the site staff in the pursuit of their duties, I think it's better to view them as flexible guidelines that exist solely for members of the community that are operating in good faith - after all, we're talking about forum rules rather than national law. If someone isn't operating in good faith - which I honestly would include people who have joined this community solely for the purpose of using it as an advertising platform - well... does it do the community as a whole any good to keep them around?

Obviously, that's something that shouldn't be taken to the extreme, and shouldn't be handled haphazardly, but thus far I've seen nothing from the staff here that makes me worry that any of them would go rogue in the face of flexibility.

hahaha

I posted a bit on this on your featured thread feature post (I just wanted to say that tittle so much since reading it :P) @zoop about this and now kinda wish I had read this one first

on other forums (yes I do cheat on this one but the others arnt anime forums so its ok to philander :largegasp:) I use you need a to have your account to a certain level , either by a min of posts or other like a year of being a member , to unlock abilities to post said thing in said area under a certain set of rules , but are still aloud access to the area but not full access and their threads were deleted if they tried to circumvent this system and if they continued their accounts deleted , and ive seen Kirry in the past non hesitant to delete accounts of ones here just to stir trouble :)

and I'm thinking if the year one or even six months was instated alone , members that wernt active wouldn't stick around to use the feature anyways but would end up probably forgetting that they were waiting

but to add a min amount of posts to this mix would help them and the community and if they still wanted to do the visit my site after that at least there would have been the interaction to pave the way as well

and maybe add a third clause to any account that goes inactive on this forum after the said requirements but to only try and draw attention to their objective also risks termination after warnings and/or suspention

Hello @zoop, thank you for the detailed feedback.

We have definitely been getting a lot of people dropping by just to advertise. Indeed we have been quite laid-back - though anything commercial such as advertising relating to online merchandise shops are quickly removed.

For now I have done this:

2: Remove threads located in the Creative board from the Recent Topics side panel.

And I've also have added another recent post box to separate the anime discussion threads so this should help.

Longer term I will need to think about this one, still in the midst of the revamp. >_<

At this stage though I feel locking Creative Corner until you reach a least 10 posts would be reasonable. Could also look at either adding a subforum strictly for channels, or using thread prefixes which would at least allow you to filter them out.

I think that'd be a very fair way to do things - would keep folks that have no interest in the forum from being able to immediately start spamming, without being outright punitive to folks that are acting in good faith.

I dunno, I think preventing folks from willy-nilly spamming would be enough, since outside of those threads the board isn't super active. Wouldn't hurt, though.

I will make an official announcement later on this.

From this point on:

 • Creative Corner now requires at least 10 posts before you can post a new thread there - automatic restriction
 • YouTube channels should be 1 thread per channel as a guideline
 • Went through and added prefixes so you can filter threads by AMV, Projects, GFX, Texts and Music

Also a new tab added on member profiles called "Creations" which lists each thread the member has made in "Creative Corner". With the Gallery (Fanworks) module decommissioned, we are encouraging better use of "Creative Corner" by highlighting it more.

Bloody brilliant idea, I'd say. While I can only speak for myself, I must confess to having never actually clicked into the gallery page more than once or twice, and I can't imagine that I'm alone in that regard. Encouraging use of the board is great, and highlighting said use of the board on people's profiles is even better, I'd say.

Beyond that, asking folks to keep their Youtube videos to one thread per channel encourages (in my opinion, anyhow) folks to put a bit of extra work into their opening posts, polish it up with details and info about their channel, etc.

So... yeah. Good moves all around, I think. :o
