The Music Nostalgia Thread

Recommended Posts

Because I need another excuse to share the favorite songs.

For those who still bear a fond memory of songs from your childhood like myself, this is your chance to share some of your favorite songs from those classic era. Share all of the old songs you're nostalgic about, from the '60s all the way to the '00s!

[spoiler=NSYNC - Pop]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWZKw_MgUPI

What nostalgic thread would it be without mentioning those boy-bands? Nsync in particular spit out some sick songs back in the day, including this favorite of mine. Seriously, this song never gets old for me.

[spoiler=Backstreet Boys - Larger Than Life]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEb2CecR11I

Of course, Nsync is a small name compared to the literally larger than life Backstreet Boys, the titan of all boy bands back in the day. Bands like One Direction are a joke compared to them IMO. :P They oozed class and style like not many other.

[spoiler=Britney Spears - Crazy]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s25OMP4Ww6Y

If I could create a Britney Spears thread dedicated to all her songs, I would. I could literally post her songs all day. She was the Queen of Pop, and for a good reason. That said, "Baby One More Time" wasn't my favorite, and "Boys" just got me grooving much harder.

[spoiler=Destiny's Child - Survivor]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmc8bQoL-J0

It's the Queen Bey! Before she went solo that is. Survivor wasn't just a motivational jam for young girls! It's a great song for bros too!

[spoiler=Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boi]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIy3n2b7V9k

Ohhhh, Avril Lavigne. What ever happened to her?! lol She was one of the great divas back then. Sure, she's no Madonna or Britney, or even Queen Bey, but damn, she used to sing some of my favorite grooves too. Aside from this song, I also like "What A Girl Wants", and of course, "Complicated".

[spoiler=Jennifer Lopez - Love Don't Cost a Thing]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kGvlESGvbs

I wonder if JLo still sings, 'coz she was goood. This one gets into my playlist immediately.

[spoiler=Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIDWgqDBNXA

C'mon, you don't seriously think I could talk about '90s diva without talking about THE Aguilera, did you? lol She had a really hot streak back then, albeit for a much shorter time. Genie in a Bottle is still a classic today.

[spoiler=Evanescence - Everybody's Fool]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhC1pI76Rqo

It's a tragedy that Evanescence became a joke for "Bring Me to Life" (which wasn't that terrible a song to begin with) when she also has other great hits (perhaps even better hits) like this one, which criticizes the superficial nature of pop stars and celebrities meant to sell an image than their music.

[spoiler=Ricky Martin - Maria]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCEvCXuglqo

Funny thing about Ricky Martin. There was a Caucasian kid back in my primary school who had a good resemblance with the pop star. And he's even named Ricky! Or at least I think he was... Could be just a nickname the other kids gave him. lol

The point is, Ricky was hot property in the male pop stars category, which was impressive considering most of the popular pop stars back then consisted of females and boy bands. The energetic "Maria" is my favorite jam of his, more so than "Livin' La Vida Loca".

[spoiler=Linkin Park - Numb]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXYiU_JCYtU

Last but not least... LINKIN PARK! '90s was just not the same without these guys! And my favorite jam of theirs, Numb, is still a great listen today in spite of its "teen angst" theme.

More nostalgia spam!

Aqua - Turn Back Time

It's a shame Aqua didn't get remember for her more "serious" songs.

Westlife - You Raise Me Up

Ah yes, Westlife, the other forgotten boy band. It's a shame, because out of the three (Backstreet, Nsync, and West), Westlife is probably the most somber of them all.

Westlife - Swear It Again

S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin'

Can't believe I haven't mentioned S Club yet. "Don't Stop Movin' " was my favorite jam as a teen that kept me dancing.

Hannah Spearritt was best gurl btw. She was so cute. Tina Barrett came close for me, what with her sexy tanned complexion and all.

LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live

Con Air was such a cheesy movie. It has dated a lot as a popcorn flick and my score for it has significantly dropped over the years. That said, this song was easily the best part about the movie, a romantic and sappy tune that still retains that sweet emotional resonance. I could imagine this being in one of those melodramatic sad scenes in a drama I would used to cry to.

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal

The '80s just isn't the same without Michael and Smooth Criminal. That said, that coin-toss was so cheesy! lol

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

I can see why this got as many awards as it did. It's still a really good listen today!

Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

Man, did anyone remember Cyndi Lauper? She was famous for her hit single, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", and then after a while, she seems to have faded away. This particular song, however, would still appear in '90s cheesy romcoms every now and then, time after time. ;)

And of course...

Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Fun song. :)

Abba - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)

This is my mum's favorite band. I can't ever turn on an Abba song without her barging in. lol That said, I do have a few favorites of mine, including this hit. However, it definitely cannot beat...

I've been jamming to this song ever since I first heard it in Johnny English. lol Can you blame ol' Johnny for dancing to this with a toothbrush in the morning? I would have too! xD

This is an overplayed song among '80s sharing groups, but it's justified.

Back then when I first discovered this song, my first thought was, "Is that the same guy who sang Tarzan's theme songs?" Little did I know how much of a hit Phil Collins was back then.

(AKA Blatant Rick Roll Link)

With the '90s, there was Britney, but the '80s belongs to Madonna, baby!

Whenever I talk about '80s music and Madonna, this popular hit always comes up.

I love both the movie (An American Tail) and the song. So full of feels. :'(

Of course I had to mention Danger Zone. It's an '80s thread. :P

Because I created one for the '90s. Even though nobody responded to that one, I'm hoping the '80s one would garner more attention. :P

Never saw your 90's thread.

You did post a few songs I like here already though, such as Smooth criminal.

Thanks.

Problem for me is I do not exactly remember or know the years of when songs came out, unless the music video has something distinguishable, such as Michael Jackson looking more like a human, so I could not really share too much.

For now, we will go with these.

Beat It - Michael Jackson

Thriller - Michael Jackson

Breaking the Habit - Linkin Park

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2H4l9RpkwM

I like this one because it reminds me of the time when Chester was struggling with his drug issues and expressed it through LP's songs. Those were the times when LP had more meaningful things to sing about than just promoting the latest Transformers movie.

The music nostalgia topic? Hahahaha... Oh my god. I'm going to be the only person here like me. I feel so weirdly self-conscious, but I think I'll share anyway.

Some context may be necessary for the stuff that I'm about to post. I was kinda raised by my grandmother, basically. As a result, the music that I liked tended to be the music that she liked, hahahaha. As a result, I had music tastes and preferences that badly predated my actual birth.

Nat King Cole - Unforgettable (1950s)

I stumbled across Nat King Cole when I was a preteen and I had the most amazing (romantic) crush on this guy, lol. You know, I was never actually a huge fan of Sinatra, tbh, because I preferred Nat's voice a lot more. It didn't hurt that my grandma liked to (attempt) to sing this on occasion, but only whenever she was certain no one was around. I was always around though, my ears are satellite dishes, hahaha.

Nat King Cole - When I Fall in Love (1950s)

My fucking heart. It just melts right out of my chest whenever I hear this particular song. I just can't even. I get teary eyed and weird, even if I was completely happy just moments before. I mean, how can you listen to this and not just... You know?

B.B. King - The Thrill is Gone (1960s)

What do you need to say? The song and the man are both a legend. I cried endless pools when B.B. King passed away. This particular live rendition is one of my favorite, just due to the way that it lingers and savors the song.

Aretha Franklin - I Say a Little Prayer (1960s)

Basically my favorite Aretha Franklin song ever. There's just something about the weird fusion of longing for someone's love and gospel overtones that speaks to my inner sacrilegious entity, hahaha.

If I *had* to name a favorite singer from this era, then it would be Aretha Franklin. Just flat out.

Ray Charles - Hit the Road Jack (1960s)

I freaking love Ray Charles. I may or may not have a relative that's named in his honor, hahaha.

I actually have a million other songs that I love from this era, so I *might* make another post here, since the youtube embeds seem to have broke.

James Brown - Get Up Offa That Thing (1970s)

The energy that James Brown brought to his songs was, in many ways, a direct predecessor to the energy that Michael Jackson brought to his music. The energy and the movement! Just look at the way his feet move in this song! To us, these days, we expect this kind of energy with music - dance and song is expected to merge. Back then? This was a new thing, especially in the way he did it.

Okay, now it's story time. My aunt dated and then married James Brown's drummer back during the 1970s (James Brown was born in a place that was basically just around the corner from where my family is from). As a result, my mom and aunts were around James Brown a lot for a little while. If you go back and look for videos online around that time, there's a faint chance that someone related to me is in them, haha.

Unfortunately, that marriage blew up. Success and money turned the guy into an abusive asshole. Story time over!

I remember Hit the Road Jack. Used to like it a lot, but do not care for it too much, as, other than a few songs from some of the artists I told you I liked, I tend to prefer calming music a lot of the time, since it relaxes me when I feel stressed or lonely.

What is out of place is ultimately subjected to the kind of people you have in the room. For example: a thread with people beginning to talk about music from the '70s and the '60s. In comes...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjVQ36NhbMk

I'll just repeat what @Cy~ said - I'll be the only person here like me, posting sappy millennial pop songs. :D

What's funny is that, a lot of people I know would dismiss the above song as another typical pop song you would hear nowadays (even though it's technically listed as "alternative rock") without really listening to the lyrics. Shame.

Here's another example of a pop song with heartfelt lyrics:

Here are a few I never see people talk about and I can't imagine why.

Friends will be friends by Queen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AIlz08fZos

This song has been my favorite Queen song ever since I've heard it. It's just so perfect in every way.

I love Pop Punk as a genre more than anything so excuse me for being an Edgelord for a second but I've been like that since before that was a term so here's some New Found Glory:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfcLcDBII78

I will also never understand why Sloppy Meateaters never became big, I mean just listen to these next two songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nds0R0qWlSY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEiQuKbzrks

That's all I got for now, but plenty more could come.
