  1. Hello I've been in search of a new community to involve myself in for a while. I recently stumbled upon this place, so decided to join. After all, this place where I can talk about something I like a lot. Wine. I love it so much. I even named myself after a vineyard. So, let's get drunk together. Oh, I'm also here for anime. I guess I'll be here for that as well. I've watched a variety of stuff from Death Note, Durarara and Hellsing Ultimate to stuff like madoka, angel beats, durarara, watamote, lucky stars and Mrs Kobayashi's dragon maid. That last one was definitely one of the highlights of this year so far. I also marathoned part 3 and 4 of Jojo's bizarre adventure a few months ago. So, yeah, I'm a a Jojo fan. As for anime I'm currently watching, there's Youjo Senki and Drifters. I also intend to watch A Silent Voice today. It, along with Your Name, is something I've heard a lot of good things about and I can't wait until it gets released on bluray, though I will end up purchasing it if it's remotely as good as everyone says it it is. I'm currently seeking to watch more things with the kind of emotional weight these two films are said to have and would appreciate recommendations from fellow members. I also intend to start Kyoukai no kanata and Little Witch Academia today. I'm also waiting to purchase My Hero Academia when I can, since I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm also awaiting the release of One Punch Man, which I have watched, this year, after watching Mob Psycho last year as it was aired online. I'm also interested in visual novels. My favourite is Umineko, which I'm sure is a surprise, given how my username comes from it. Anyway, I also like Steins gate and have also watched the anime. I intend to get Steins Gate 0 very soon. I also intend to reread Umineko and some of the routes of Katawa shoujo soon. I also enjoy games with visual novel elements like zero escape, danganronpa and ace attorney. I'm currently replaying Virtue's Last Reward and am waiting for the PS4 release of Zero Time Dilemma. I've also been getting back into gaming in general, since I recently gained the means to play a lot of games that I couldn't before. So far, I'm playing Nier Automata and Resident Evil 7. I do intend to get Persona 5 and Final Fantasy 15, because what I've seen of P5 is amazing and I have an interest in Final Fantasy, but had been put off by the reputation of FF12 and 13 and don't play MMORPGs. So, it's been quite a while since I've touched a Final Fantasy game. Apart from that? Well, I'm currently excited that Undertale is going to get a physical PS4 release. I did write fanfiction for a bit and have an interest in getting back into it. Here's a link. So, what else is there to say? Well, I'm an introverted person seeking a community to involve myself in and have been after a new one for quite a while. My efforts to find a new one to be a part of have been very unsuccessful. But this place looks very good. So, I hope this works out and that I'll get along well with you all.

  3. Delightful banner provided by our very own Nectar. Good evening ladies, gentlemen, and everything in between, and welcome --- to a Mafia thread! For those of you not familiar, Mafia is a party game that can be played in person, on forums, in chat rooms, or any combination thereof! It's a game of murder and mystery, suspicion and betrayal, wherein a group of players come together and attempt to discover the identity of a dastardly murderer hiding within their midst. Mafia games are divided into two phases - a 'day phase', in which players come together to discuss the events of the game, and decide which among their number they suspect of being the murderer, before coming together and voting for who they find the most suspicious - with the most-voted player being removed from the game. The other phase is the 'night phase', in which the murderer or murderers pick out a poor unsuspecting player, and murders them - thus removing them from the game. The game ends when the number of innocent players is equal to or less than the number of murderers, or when the murderer himself has been voted out of the game. So, that's a basic idea as to how the game works, and here are a few specific rules: At the start of the game, I will send the murderer a PM informing him or her of their role. If there are any non-murderers with special abilities, they will also receive a PM. These special roles will be granted based on the results of a random number generator. Players are not allowed to PM each other with regards to the game. Players who have been removed from the game may make a final post in the thread, but are otherwise asked to not participate in game discussion beyond that - this means that if you accidentally kill off your best detective, you're going to be missing out on their assistance moving forward. I'll make a group PM for all deceased players to discuss the game. I will announce the start and end of all game phases, the results of all night actions, etc. Day phases will end after 48 hours, or immediately after a majority vote is reached. Vote with caution. If no majority vote has been reached by the end of a 48 hour day phase, the person with the most votes is removed from the game. To ensure that your votes are counted during day phases, state the name of the person you are voting for in bold. Players with special roles may not share or quote any part of their role PM in the game thread. If you're interested in joining the game, please post here indicating as such, and I'll add you to this post. 5. Honesty: Being honest and vulnerable takes guts Courage: I'm not a very courageous person, fear is the most limiting thing I find in life, so if you're courageous, you have my respect, and envy, let's be honest. Discipline: I am a serial procrastinator, and aside from my ability to pull myself together so I can go lift heavy things or hit a bag, I am a complete mess. I admire discipline, almost as much as courage, discipline is hard, people who do hard things have my respect. Kindness: Having the capacity to look at someone, understand what they're going through and help them, is admirable, and necessary in a society in which we are increasingly disconnected from one another. If everyone was kind the world would be a very different place, that goes without saying. Of course that's not how the world is, so all of us, including myself, must walk around armed to protect ourselves. There is evil in this world, maybe not in an objective sense, as evil is an idea, but it is nonetheless present.

  11. Honestly, I didn't care about pairings until Naruto came along. And Sakura just ruined the show for me. That Sakura & Sasuke thing made no sense, but Hinata & Naruto didn't have much development either. They weren't even on the same team. I was starting like Sakura in the second show, but when Sasuke came into the picture it ruined all her character development. Such a shame.

  12. Wow... well okay I'd be up for a new game, bit of a waste of a very good discussion though Starting over, gah. I guess that's the only option. It's not like one of us can take over, for obvious reasons. New thread? "AF Mafia II" perhaps?

  14. @Kirry , @Sekkarou , @Scrooge , @zin , @Nectar , @Wedgy , @Kohloo , @John jobs So uhhh... Stuff happened and Orius has apparently left the forum. Obviously that leaves the current mafia game in a state of limbo. I'd be happy to host a new game with a couple modified rules though, if people are interested in continuing. The tweaks I'd have in mind would basically take things closer to more of a 'classic' style mafia game, which would be... Less GM interference. One or more (depending on player count) 'enhanced' innocents that have their own, defensive night actions. Minor rule tweaks - no PMs, for example. Just something to ponder, since this game didn't really get very far.

  15. A couple of series I really like are Yoroiden Samurai Troopers and Lupin III (1971 version)...but neither are timeless as they definitely reflect the times they were made in, especially the latter. It just screams late 60s/early 70s. To me, it's like comparing the 1960s run of the Jetsons with its 1980s run. As a kid, I definitely preferred the latter as the former felt slightly sexist to me...especially that STUPIDITY over how bad women drivers were. Hm, maybe a good example of a "timeless classic" is something like Sazae-san. You can pick it up anyplace, and it doesn't feel too dated despite its being on since 1969. The writers/animators purposely keep it that way too, I heard. It's not boggled down by a lot of pop cultural references or a lot of super high technological gadgets. The stories are also nice and simplistic and good for the whole family. I guess another I'd pick is maybe Cowboy Bebop. It's set in the future, but it isn't too farfetched either. It had nice characters, stories, action in some eps, etc.

  17. Human' themselves limit it, just like every other human endeavor. But I haven't really said anything new. As for what I think it's lacking, hmmmm..... human sized chests, drama which features real normal reactions, an anime which critically evaluates Japanese society itself, one which doesn't bastardize European or any other history, a harem anime with consequences and one in which one person is chosen, more serious-ish fantasy animes like berserk.

  19. I've said it before in another thread, but I'll say it again here, Yuuki's story is not as compelling as we are all lead to believe. I mean really, who would believe in a world where someone who is dying spends the last few minutes of their life on a video game instead of with loved ones. That nonsensical set up just takes away from the setting as a whole. It would have been better if Yuuki was an AI, because it would have also made it seem possible that Yui could at one point be in danger, negating that annoying bit where Kirito basically becomes a master hacker, well beyond the abilities of any known hacker, just long enough to remove any dramatic tension set up in that scene in season 1.

  21. Listen, it's been fun to reminisce over 2013. But I have one thing that always stuck out to me in this idea of SOA + being good or any anime for that matter, being good or bad. Reading through this thread has really made it apparent that people don't know how to gather basic evidence for their opinion. In other news, we are also so scared to give evidence because we are so afraid of disagreeing with one another. Disagreeing does not = not being able to have community together. Is it better for me to be me or for you to see a fake person, how is that community? In regards to the very first reply in this thread, I need to ask you, WHAT?! Could you please tell me as a person who is Asuna? and Who as a person is Kirito? Your statement boggled my mind and do the same with any character except for Yuki (purple hair). Furthermore the last part of Season 2 was by far better than the rest of SAO because of the Yuki arc, Asuna grew character there without that she is a teenage girl with hardly any personality we know nothing about her and without her experience in SAO she wouldn't have developed as a character at all, it's embarrassing to claim she is a good character before Season 2.

  22. Naruto Shipudden Everyone who died during the Pain Arc stays dead. Rurouni Kenshin End the series after Makoto is defeated. Black Cat Keep the darker tone from the beginning. Ai Yori Aoshi Cut the harem and make it a romance. NANA Give Nobuo a spine. Cowboy Bebop Make the show about Spike chasing Vicious.

Every guy who's just a pervert and that's all there is to his character. The female fighter/warrior with a double D chest.

  36. I grew up watching Teen Titans when it was on cartoon network back in the day, it had an anime-inspired art style. Though looking back, it wasn't very well animated, however it used that to it's advantage for the jokes. Nowadays they have Teen Titans GO!, which I would compare to Keroro Gunso in that it's funny for the first few episodes, but it starts to feel like your intelligence is being insulted after a while. They were going to have a live-action Teen Titans television series, but that never came to be and instead they opted to make Justice League vs. Teen Titans, which wasn't very good imo. If they were to make a Teen Titans movie as part of the DC movie universe, then I'd be willing to go see that. Oh, and they should make a new anime series for it.

  40. Are you an alien, @Cy~? Sorry, but your fascination with them discovering anime just leads to... questions. I don't think Clannad ~After Story~ is timeless by the way, even though I like it a lot. I think there are many slice-of-life anime that came later and did better what Clannad did. "Overuse of tropes" is what the first season of Clannad was known for, after all, and After Story is hardly an anime that rise above that. If we are going to talk about anime teaching important life lessons that will never age, I'd say Mushishi and Kino's Journey would be far better (and criminally underrated) examples. I've already talked at length about them in the "Limitations of Anime" thread, but they are just so unique and unlike other anime that they will stand the test of time while others fade into "just another anime with moe and cute girls". Let's face it - Clannad is a glorified harem anime with a better "true end" than others.

  43. Not sure if this counts... All-female cast Look, I like cute girls as much as the next guy, but seriously? Seriously? There's already a lack of male characters I can relate to enough as it is. I would say that one male character would be enough, but that'd inevitably turned into a harem. In School Idol Project, I just kind of assumed that Honoka's father was dead because they didn't have any male characters up until the point he made a brief cameo. And then in Sunshine!!, there weren't even any guys in the background. I feel like we need some all-male cast anime to counter-balance...and then stop this non-sense altogether.

  44. I probably shouldn't talk about SAO anymore because every time I call it out for what makes it flawed, someone dislikes my posts and tries to start a fight with me, but all the same, here's my thing about these shows. SAO starts off well as far as being interesting is concerned, but that said, if you go look back at it and aren't a huge fan, you'll see it's not as good as you remember. Log Horizon, to me at least, starts off as being rather boring before it picks up, and going back and watching it again doesn't change that. However, when it comes down to the nitty gritty of it all, SAO constantly spirals downward, while Log Horizon constantly spirals upward. SAO becomes more about the harem that never made sense, and even characters who are not in that harem are defined by not being it, which is to say, they show up less often because they aren't eye candy, and even when they do show up, they often don't do much. In Log Horizon, the exact opposite happens. Characters become more interesting, and more developed, and you start to care about them more. With SAO, I actually started to forget minor characters names and appearances, and as the harem grew for no reason, it became hard to even keep current characters together because their only defining feature as characters and not eye candy was liking Kirito for a reason that was not given. At least when they were still in SAO, Lizbeth and whatever the Loli character who's name I can never remember anymore had a reason for like him, because he saved them or showed them something they believe would have been impossible without him. By the time we're watching ALO, characters are popping out of the woodwork and instantly falling for him, and then most of the time is spent on that. Log Horizon, simply doesn't have that issue, but the problem with it is that it might not be as entertaining if you are watching it more for action, because it doesn't have as much as SAO. Log Horizon does what most anime from 90's and at least early 2000's did, and that was focus on character development, which means less time is spent fighting enemies, and more time is spent on characters talking, or us as viewers learning about them in one way or another. Log Horizon is a slower show, but if you like character development that shouldn't be a problem. If you're in more for the action, then SAO is the better choice, provided the pointless harem doesn't bother you as much as it did me. All that said, I honestly think, while being as unbiased as possible that both shows aren't as interesting as the dot hack series. Now to be clear, my favorite games off all time are the GU trilogy of titles, so it's a little hard for me not to be at least somewhat biased, I understand what I'm about to say may not interest you as much as it does me. Throughout the run of dot hack as an anime, it's had this theme of a virus attacking whatever version of the MMO game the characters are playing called "The World" and putting people in coma's over it. You'd think because it's not death, it would be less interesting than an anime that does have that, but honestly, there's something very compelling about watching people try to figure out if they can save people in coma's, and if they, it's even more interesting to see how they'll do it. Now granted, even though I'm a huge fan of this anime and the games, I realize the shows are incredibly slow, and there's one anime in the series that was fairly short by highly annoying where the main characters take control of the avatars of the two lead characters from the first 4 games because they stopped playing it, and it was just bad. That said, there two anime, that even though they aren't fast paced, are fun to watch, and even the first 4 games have a 4 episode anime tying some characters together with the plot of the games, and working to help set up the next show. The lore of the anime is what's so appealing honestly. Anyways, I'm rambling, and I went off topic for a while, but yeah, overall my money's on Log Horizon.

  47. Okay, I haven't seen all of Log Horizon, but I've seen most of SAO. I think Log Horizon is better. One reason is the world, it really felt so much more like a game. Another reason is the characters, look, I'm not gonna lie, I think Kirito and Asuna are two of the most boring anime protagonists ever. Kirito is practically an idiot with how he deals with people, and Asuna always just seemed flat to me. And I could care less for the romance, it wasn't that good IMO. And then the support characters, seriously. Yui was annoying to me, and Liz and Silica were too cause it was obvious that they both also liked Kirito, and that is just annoying to me. The harem aspect I mean, and it just got worse in the Alf arc when Leafa is brought in. Agil and Klein are my favorite characters in the series(Along with Recon) but they barely did anything important! Much less appear half the time! Meanwhile in Log Horizon I actually care about the characters, Shiroe is actually a smart guy, and Akatsuki is endearing. The only character I don't really like is Naotsugu due to his perverted tendencies, but it wasn't prevalent enough to really be annoying. Also Nyanta=Instant Win, and Rundelhaus was just the best, I've always liked the wimpy characters who think highly of themselves. But in the end there is one difference that means everything to me. Man With A Mission.
