  1. Thanks for hosting the contest @Seshi. Congrats to my pal @Kinbaryu for winning, nothing beats self-made AMV's. I hope next time more contestants will participate.

  3. There are a lot of smaller things you can do with animation, that would be tricky to pull off in "in real life" comedies or SoL shows. There's of course exaggerating features for comedic effect. But think about using backgrounds to highlight certain things or reactions. Another example. Animation also arguably makes it easier to set the mood using colour. It can give studios their own, unique, visual style that's instantly recognizable.

  4. But in anime they play differently than normal.

  5. Thanks so much cose! Code geass is on my wishlist, and I just received anohana the series in the mail. (Still have yet to buy the film. Steins Gate I already own. The rest I'll look into. Heard very mixed things about Darling in the Franxx so I haven't pulled the trigger on that one. Konosuba is something I just read about haha! The rest I'll check into for sure. Fate overwhelms me with all the different versions. But I'm considering getting into that series.

  8. I think you did a really good job summarizing why I’ve always been a fan of animation in general and not just anime as far as bring a form of expression. Even when the setting or story isn’t anything fantastical, the visual style and character designs can make it stand out from others that have similar concepts. Whike things like lighting and fx can have a similar impact on live action, it doesn’t seem as noticeable.

  10. I like anime with layers. No spoilers below. A more specific genre I like is fantasy. My favorite fantasy anime utilize fantasy elements to represent the inner struggles of the cast, especially in series like the Monogatari Series, Land of the Lustrous, and the Fate series. Spoilers for these three below. Well I think that depends upon the anime. I haven't seen too much slice-of-life anime myself, but anime like Dragon Maid are definitely worth checking out. You can't really film a live-action version of that. Also, typically these slice-of-life anime are drawn to be cute or funny, which is another element that'd hard to capture purely through live-action, since humor is a little different in live-action media.

  14. @Serge heartless technically yes. there's still some difference in the sense that most anime are influenced by Japanese culture and usually behave differently from normal (I think that's what @cose1321 also meant). You could go ahead and make a live action version using a Japanese environment and Japanese staff which behave the same way. Then you'd probably have something that is very similar. I think generally speaking it is true that other genres are more difficult to adapt as live action. But I think it would still be different because one is live-action while the other is something like a cartoon which just makes it look differently. I'm not sure if it is all that important that you can or cannot adapt it as live action. If a slice of life is done well, I don't care if it could be adapted into live action, I just enjoy watching it.

  15. The point is, you have a show with just them doing normal everything things, you can just make the same show with real life people. It would be pretty much the same.

  16. Probably working overtime. We're short 2 people in a 10-person crew so things are already tight. (We have to keep 2 x 24/7 operations positions staffed with only the remaining 8 people so with some "extra" testing for upcoming events on top of the regular schedule there's currently not a lot of slack.) If and when someone wants vacation time with their kids over summer, or gets sick or something, then someone is going to have to pick up the hours.

  17. I don't know why, but I can't watch sports on tv or IRL, it's not as interesting as playing (like you said) but in anime I can watch sports. It's just done in more depth, and you can follow someone's story from start to finish.

  18. Thank you so so much beocat! I'm really loving this community of people helping each other out!!! Only problem I'd say is I'm obsessed with bluray's and not just that, but limited editions Seriously if I find out a release has a LE I tend to go for that purchase...! But I think I'll definitely look into those sales and such to see my options. Definitely doesn't hurt! It might be nice to eventually get bookcases/media cases with doors. But so far dusting hasn't been that big of an issue for me cause my collection is quite small. If I were to eventually get ones with doors they'd of course have to be see-through so I could see the collection. Heres m my current set-up- But I don't like the black background for my anime and the bookcase is super cheap. The back part is paper and not real wood. And this arrives literally tomorrow: Its going to be my dedicated anime shelving. I think it'll class up my display quite a bit. What do you guys think?

  19. @Fireduck I totally get the new bookshelves. A few years back, I experimented with a super cheap bookshelf that had sliding glass doors for my anime collection. The construction was...of questionable stability (you get what you pay for) , but the fact that I've never had to dust my collection that was in those shelves since I got it is priceless. Then a few years ago, I went all in. Bought some high quality ones (like 800 dollars each) for downstairs (two of these taller cases with sliding glass doors replaced the 3.5 cheap bookshelves we had before and still have room for movie expansion and they take up much less room!), and another one for upstairs (to house my anime collection). The plan was to eventually buy a few more for the rest of my anime collection and possibly convert my gaming collection over to it, but I've had to save up my money for other things in recent years (home repairs and whatnot), so I didn't get much further than that. Still, it was totally worth it. Dusting DVDs and blurays takes forever and my collection looks sharp with these dvd/bluray libraries. I also used to collect the First 4 Figures statues. I have a couple of well sought after Zelda statues among some others but I too have pulled back from those. The last one I would have wanted would have been Midna's True form, but even if I had it, I have nowhere to put it beyond buying a Curio cabinet for displaying them all. I still preorder statues, but most of them are Batman statues for my husband, and random gaming statues for me. Since you have $1000 of anime to catch up on buying, I recommend checking out Sentai Filmwork's shop (they sale nonSentai DVDs too,). I think right now (or recently) they had a DVD sale where DVD collections were knocked down to $5 and $8 a go and usually around the 4th of July (runs early July through middle/end of July if I'm not mistaken) they have a massive sale, similar to their Black Friday sales where most everything is 50-85% off. If you have any titles that they carry on your "gotta track down" list, I highly recommend you wait for their upcoming sale and grab what you can. In years past, I've managed to take home 18-24 collections/movies/items for only around $120 by shopping the sales (blurays are going to be more expensive in the sales, so a friend of mine has done even better than me by getting mostly DVDs during these sales). Might get you to your collection goal a bit faster and with less money spent I know they ship in the US...not sure about other places.

  20. Comedy / slice of life and iyashikei. I like cute, comfy, relaxing stuff If you can look past the animation, definitely try Higurashi. The first season is straight up mystery / horror. The second season (Higurashi... Kai) is more of a thriller, where everything comes together. Shinsekai Yori has a dark, unsettling tone all throughout the series. It approaches its horror elements in a more psychological way, never getting really gory.

  22. This for me too, though like some people have already said I tend to watch a little bit of everything, especially since streaming lets me explore without spending a lot of money.

  23. I agree with you that Japan does make lolis sexual, and it is a common character type for anime now. I like all characters types, but I see why you wouldn’t like them.

  26. I haven't watched enough anime to say for sure but so far probably the emotional ones. My faves are "your name" and "A silent voice". I'm not sure what category those would be considered. Second would probably be comedies. My favorite movie genre is horror but I haven't watched enough horror anime's to be able to say yet. All I own is Shiki and Elfen lied. Haven't watched either. I guess I could include HotD, I really liked that one. I don't think Death Parade is considered horror is it?

  27. My opinion of the series actually went up a fair bit after watching episode 12 as I like the way this current mission is unfolding. As long as they keep up the momentum next week, I’ll probably follow it into the new cour.

  30. Ya the Magi series. Fate/Zero and fate/stay night unlimited blade works tv series both have mages in them. And fullmetal alchemist Theres also Familiar of Zero, which isn't as good as fate or full metal, but at least it has wizards or mages in it.
