I agree with your sentiment. While it's true that cartoons and fiction feature imaginary characters and scenarios, they often reflect and influence our real-world desires, values, and aspirations. Many of the themes, values, and emotions portrayed in fiction resonate with us precisely because they tap into our fundamental human experiences and desires. For example, when we enjoy stories of bravery and heroism in fiction, it's because we admire those qualities in real life as well. When we connect with fictional characters' struggles, it's often because we can relate to similar challenges in our own lives. And when we find certain relationships or dynamics appealing in fiction, it's because they mirror our desires for connection and understanding in reality. So, dismissing the impact of fiction by saying, "It's not a real person," overlooks the profound ways in which fiction shapes our thoughts, values, and even our actions. Stories, whether in the form of cartoons, literature, or any other medium, have the power to influence and reflect our deepest desires and beliefs.3 points

For me it's the artwork. Anime style seems to be different than cartoons. For me when I think about cartoons I think about Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry, something like that When I think about anime I think about things like Naruto, SAO, FMA, with that specific artwork style. Also like @Animedragon said too it's the storyline. Anime seems to have an actual storyline with things progressing with each episode like a normal T.V show would, and when I think about cartoons I think about something that doesn't really have a storyline that goes from episode to episode.3 points

For me what defines an anime and separates it from being a cartoon is the quality of the background artwork along with characters that are well designed, drawn and animated to look and act like real people. Yes, I know real people don't have really large eyes, but that's part of the anime visual style and it's often the detail in the eyes which bring a character to life. For me the other aspect that separates anime from cartoons is the storylines, anime always seems to me to have more serious and thoughtful stories that cartoons. Someone once said that cartoons are story driven and the story dictates how the characters act, while anime is more character driven and the actions of the characters directs the flow of the story.3 points

Hey so I want to have an open conversation about something I think people maybe overlook or try not to think to heavily about, which is what I did for a long time but recently I can’t anymore it’s like my mind unlocked info and now I can’t turn it off. We all know anime has a lot of fan service right? Well usually I can ignore it cause it’s usually just a high-school girl with big boobs and her panties are showing, stereotypical. I’m talking about the other issue. The sexualization of very young girls and or young looking girls. For example, I’m scrolling on a website to read a manga and I come across one with a girl in elementary school flashing her panties and I’m like what is this? I just ignore it but I do want to ask how is it so widely accepted? I know most people see it and go oh god but we also like don’t riot or try and take it down. It’s considered freedom of expression or the argument is “the author isn’t a pedo he likes anime lolis”. It got me to thinking though when manga artists who do draw sexualized anime girls( specifically very young ones) are they using a reference in their head? Do they have a reference of a real life little girl and use her to draw, or is it more they use reference of a made up adult but just makes them smaller in their head, or do they use other loli characters as reference so on and so fourth or do they make up the anime girl completely without any reference whether real or fake. I just couldn’t get it out of my head if they’re using real children as reference to draw whether they use fotos of images in their head of real kids they’ve seen. Even big time anime’s or mangakas will draw young girls flashing their non existent cleavage or showing panties, one good example is Shirō from no game no life. she’s literally 11 but so sexualized. It’s so prevalent in other shows and mangas and they tend to be created by men as well. I love anime and manga, I really do, but I just wanted to get opinions from other people who see this happening as well, how do you cope? Or are you also not coping well. Do you have any more knowledge and insight from artists who do draw loli characters? Are they not using real kids and reference. The problem here to is there will be artists who are creeps and do use real children, I guess I’m talking about the majority of the community that draws that kind of stuff, what do they use as reference if any. Thank you for listening to me ramble, I just feel like this is an important topic and want to talk to other people who either feel the same way I do or who have different opinions or thoughts. :)2 points

Hi everyone, how are we doing? I'm the puddinater (if you couldn't guess, that's not my real name, but I do like puddin). My favourite anime is berserk, which is also my favourite manga. Apart from anime I like videogames (JRPGS and such), music (like the beatles and nirvana), and eating pudding. Anyway, hope everyone's doing well, I'm looking foward to meeting everyone (PS: this is the first forum I've joined so I don't really know what to say, hope I've done everything correctly)2 points

Can I see your favorite art that you've made? It can be anything, drawings, graphics, photography, maybe crafts you've made. If you don't have any of that post your fave art by someone else! (Just make sure to post who it's by). These are my top 2 graphics that I've made for myself and for friends, and my favorite painting by an artist: This is my favorite C4D sig I've made: This is my favorite PNG sig that I've made: And this is my favorite art, not made by me. It's a painting of Irises by Claude Monet. I always wished I was able to paint like that ^^ :2 points

Title; Iron-Blooded Orphans ( Part of the mobile suit gundam series ) Genre (according to Google); Anime, Mecha, Military Science Fiction, Where to watch; Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Funimation Now. or you can buy it. Length; 25 episodes IBO is one of my favorite animes ever. There is so much action, some sad moments, some happy moments, and just a rollercoaster of emotions. It gets you attached. Its also decently short, so you won't get tired of it, or you can watch it while taking a break from a more extended series! Warning; There IS quite a bit of blood & fighting2 points

I love to go Geocaching. It's treasure hunting using GPS to help find things others have hidden for everyone to seek out. For the experience. To discover new places you didn't know existed. I've been a casual geocacher since 2011 and it is very much fun. Best part...it's free to do this exciting hobby! ...btw if you are interested, check out www.geocaching.com.2 points

@Jaywolf88 I cannot stress enough how much I agree with this, the main argument you'll hear from people is "it's a cartoon / fiction, it's not a real person", but that really means nothing when you consider that the things we enjoy in fiction are very strongly related to the things we want in reality. For instance, very silly but accurate example, if you adore dogs IRL, it's very likely you'll naturally enjoy a work of art about dogs. The same principle applies for pretty much everything else, and the excuse that it's "an anime, it's what it does" is a deflection of the fact that these people are genuine paedophiles trying to mask what they are. Is every person who enjoys anime with some degree of fan service one of them? I want to believe not, that some are just ignorant and so desensitised to the sexualisation of minors that they just go with it. It's essential to help them grow aware of the dangerous culture they're promoting unawaringly (or aware). I've been falling out of watching anime more and more with the years, to the point where I only watch maybe one or two things a year if a friend recommends it to me. Paradoxical considering I'm an admin in a website called Anime Forums, but I know there's a lot of value in the art of Japanese animation and I want to strive for a healthier environment that recognises it over cheap eye candy for perverts.2 points

Welcome Hope you find things to interest you here & decide to stick around. Since you like Attack on Titan, I recommend 86 & Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. Noein is an older series that is similar to Summertime Rendering. For drama & romance I recommend the Fruits Basket remake (2019-2021).2 points

Happy birthday! Mine is tomorrow so I’m asking myself the same question. Also things like, “who came up with this whole birthday thing anyway?” I suspect it was either the same guy who came up with Mondays or a close associate.2 points

No, nothing new as far as my graphics projects go. Right now I'm just sporting a set that Sakura made for me that I combined into a gif. So, I didn't make it, but it's still cool. ^^ I just worked on this a little bit. Added some words and used a still frame from the animated gif of Joshua Christopher. Here it is:2 points

Today is my birthday . So where did the year go? Mark Twain once said that age is just mind over matter, and if you don't mind, it doesn't matter! Age is, of course, just a number. But some days I feel every one of my 71 years2 points

The only ones I usually recognize by their voice are Ian Sinclair, Derek Stephen Prince, Yuri Lowenthal and Crispin Freeman. I got to meet Ian Sinclair and he signed my Whis Funko Pop for me, so that was a pretty cool moment and he's super nice so he's pretty much my favorite out of all of them.2 points

Did the 3-ep thing on The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. Planning on continuing at the end of the season but I gotta say I already have one complaint about the animation. The dust motes. One of those things that you don't notice right away but once I did I found it very distracting.2 points

I started watching Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead I like it a lot. I'm very amused that the protagonist prefers the apocalypse before going to work. (I feel a bit the same :P)2 points

100F temps lately means replacing the A/C air filter in the car gets top priority on today's todo list. Having to choose between breathing oven-temperature air or air that smells like moldy socks is not a choice one should have to make.2 points

For profile banner I just used a large wallpaper but I don't remember what size it is. For signature banners I make those, and I usually use sizes between 400 - 500 length and 130 - 250 height, depending on the sig. I think my current is more like 775 length though and that fit the length of the posts.2 points

I've been doing graphics like these for years. I did them on another forum I used to go to, and pretty much every forum I've visited I've done some kind of tweaked image or combined gifs with my username on each separate gif, but the avatar size on here is notably smaller so I can't do that, but I can still tweak some gifs to use as my avy on here. ^^ Just with renders and backgrounds with highlighted text and sometimes a border. Nothing special or anything, but I like 'em. ^^ And usually they take me a handful of hours. First I need to track down an appropriate or fitting background image on some free image sites, though right now I only rely on 1 that I've used for copyright-free materials then add in the renders and effects. Takes a while till I'm happy with the result though. I appreciate you asking about both.2 points

This was a conversation between game show host legend Richard Dawson and his mom. He was a child seeing soldiers of all colors leaving from his hometown of England on D-Day in World War II, and he was trying to understand seeing people of other colors for the first time in his life. Mom: "God. God makes people. You understand that, don't you?" Richard: "Yes." Mom: "Who makes a rainbow?" Richard: "God." Mom: "I'd never presume to tell anyone who could make a rainbow what color to make children."2 points

My brother’s kids requested stickers as necessary back-to-school accessories so I stopped in at the company store today. Unfortunately they were out of stock on those but for myself I did pick up a new cap with all the NASA rovers in silhouette, a Mars Sample Return mission sticker, and an Artemis patch. On the cap that’s the Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance rovers, along with the Ingenuity drone/helicopter at the far right. And yes that’s my Kerbal coffee mug off to the side there.2 points
