    External HDDs

Hey guys. Always good to have an External HDD especially when dealing with photos, videos or general backups. These devices come under two categories which are the HDD sizes inside: 2.5" (laptop size) and 3.5" (desktop size). The 2.5" ones are the most popular as they're smaller, portable and USB powered, so they don't need an AC power cord. The 3.5" ones typically stay on your desk because they're much bigger and need AC power as they usually have a cooling fan in-built and often have more interfaces such as E-SATA and FireWire. My Recommendation I recently got a new 2.5" External HDD: the Western Digital My Passport 2 TB which has USB 3. It's GREAT, I can't believe this tiny thing has more capacity than my previous 2 External HDDs combined... And it's decently priced, I got this one a few months back at $200 USD from Amazon but I see it has dropped to $165.
  2. Discussion thread for Evangelion 2.0 /2.22! I realise this was released many months ago, BUT I was just curious what your thoughts were on the new character, Mari? I quite like this character! She is strong willed and gets to the point when piloting Unit 05 at the start. But I do feel her backstory hasn't developed much as she disappears after the starting scene and shows up again, midway in the film with a spectacular landing on Shinji. And it was a interesting twist when... the piloting roles were changed with Asuka against the Tenth Angel. I hope we learn more about Mari in Evangelion 3.0. Not much longer to wait! What are your thoughts?

    McDonald's

I LOVE the Grand Angus! But I haven't had it for a month due to my Europe holiday. What exactly have they changed?
  4. What are your current hobbies? For me: Forum of course! Photography: with my compact Canon S95 Point & Shoot camera. It's really good and great for group photos due to the wide lens. Great to put in a carry case with a belt loop. Short Films: One every few months, finding actors and the right time for everyone involved is the challenging part!
  5. What a passionate crowd. Not long now indeed! I watched Evangelion 2.0 again to whet my appetite. I'll probably watch Evangelion 1.0 again too.
  6. I really was beginning to wonder when Chester would return to the screaming lyrics from the early days. Enjoyed listening to Lost in the Echo and Burn it Down from their YouTube channel. Will buy the album when I'm next in the shops.
  7. I have been fortunate in avoiding flight disasters and delays throughout my travels. Here are my experiences below: Jetstar 5/10: Budget Australian domestic airline which I used for travelling to Melbourne back in 2010. Naturally no meals/snacks onboard. Noisy aircraft, snacks and beverages moderately priced. No in-flight entertainment. Bought a packet of M&M chocolates for $3 and a cup of tea for $2 onboard. Flight attendants provided adequate service. Singapore Airlines 8/10: It has been a LONG time since I visited Singapore. Last time I visited was back in 2004, I do remember the flight attendants were very friendly and the meals were good. In-flight entertainment screens at the time were great. This airline is highly rated throughout the world. AirAsia and Cathay Pacific 7/10: We used these two airlines for our China Holiday in 2008. AirAsia was used for our domestic flights such as Xi'An, Beijing and Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific we used for our intercontinental flights from and to Australia. No complaints, AirAsia had limited entertainment and light snacks. Cathay Pacific had good service and meals. My only minor criticism with AirAsia is the level of English in their announcements, their accent was so thick I could not understand it at all! Their Mandarin of course was fine. Malaysia Airlines and KLM 9/10: My recent Europe holiday was booked through KLM. KLM don't fly to Australia so they have an alliance with Malaysia Airlines to do the trip from there to Kuala Lumpur -> Amsterdam. I've flown a few times on Malaysia Airlines and think they have the best inflight entertainment service and meals. Every flavour of Asia movies is there: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindu, Malaysian... and of course mainstream Western movies. Meals are really good, I enjoyed their lamb and chicken hot meals. Start of flight snacks are tasty peanuts! The only thing is it's rare to see the flight attendants smiling... KLM's inflight entertainment was just as good. Of course the selection is very different, you had more Western mainstream movies and they even had Dutch films too with subtitles! From Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam it is 11 hours, so for such a long trip you really want it as comfortable as possible within Economy. KLM impressed me with their service, always smiling and courteous and nice meals too with LOTS and LOTS of bread rolls. Start of flight snacks were cashews! How about you? Have any memorable experiences with airlines, good or bad? Discuss!

    McDonald's

    1. How often do you have McDonald's? 2. Anything unique about your country's McDonald's compared to other ones you have visited around the world? 3. Your favourite menu item(s) and why? I will give my responses soon.
  9. Well here is my WoW story: I started playing WoW during my university years, my first foray into the game was vanilla WoW, shortly before the Burning Crusade expansion came out. It was my first MMO game and I soon got addicted! I almost always played Alliance, my first character being a Human warrior. Tried a few different classes but then came back to Warrior as a Night Elf. The novelty wore off and I joined various small raiding guilds doing the first few raids in BC (Karazhan) and Lich King (Naxxramas). Fun and awesome lore wise but can be more stress than fun sometimes on the boss fights since you do have to coordinate carefully with 9 other people. And of course finding a common raiding time due to time zones... so I stopped raiding. And eventually I stopped playing and deleted my account as it was taking up way too much of my time which I needed for university. I stopped at Lich King. It's amazing and bizarre at the same time seeing how successful this game is given its age. I do wonder if the latest expansion Mists of Pandaria will be the last...?
  10. Hello Corrupt! It touches me to see there are many others like yourself that missed the old AN forums, great to see you again.
  11. Black Mesa is a mod that was announced almost 8 years ago back in 2004! It was meant to be a fully fledged remake of Half-Life 1 using the Source engine. Some of you may have played Half Life: Source, Valve's take on trying to remake it was pretty average with just a few textures swapped over, hardly utilising the physics engine at all. And it finally came out! So did they succeed? Yes! I've played up to reaching the surface so far when you encounter the military up near the surface. Voice acting is humorous and bizarre at the same time. Great music remixes. Yes the Source engine is almost 5 years old now but it looks GREAT compared to the original Half-Life 1 engine. Annoying but refreshing returning to HP instead of regenerating health too... For a free 8 GB mod, it's hard to go wrong. Discuss. http://release.blackmesasource.com/
  12. My Lithuanian friend recommended me to read The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. Apparantly it's a good classic, will start reading it soon.

    Travel Adapters

I bought the Go Travel global adapter which is pretty similar to the one pictured in my first post. As you're in USA I'm not sure what brands you have over there. I would recommend two adapters, a three prong USA to Asia adapter (which you probably already have) for your devices that have a grounded plug and a universal global one in case you travel to Europe! Maybe others can recommend you a brand?
  14. Good call NightDancer! My rant: working on a dark version of this Evangelion 2.0 theme. Converting hexadecimal to RGB blargh!

    Life

When I was in university, I changed my computer course from Cisco networking to Business Informatics halfway through so that added a year. Similarly people change jobs and careers over time until they find their true calling. Maybe you can work part-time or casually during your second degree to lessen the financial cost?
  16. Welcome Fab. Good to see you again!
  17. In no particular order: Australia (naturally!) China Malaysia Singapore United Kingdom Netherlands Lithuania Stopovers not included.
  18. Awesome! Keep them coming!
  19. Welcome back Ishy! Great to see you again!

    Hello!

Welcome to the AN Forums Ciara ! Glad to see you!
  23. Yes we were left with that cliffhanger since HL episode 2... On a positive note that fan made remake of Half Life 1, Blac Mesa was released recently. Will give it a go when I get home!
  24. Travelling to another country? You'll most likely need a power adapter for your appliances and chargers then! Firstly you need to check if your charger will accept the correct voltage because a number of countries uses different voltage levels at the power point. For example, Australia and the UK uses 240v whilst the USA uses 120v. Recent chargers usually will accept all voltages with no problem! But you still need to check just in case, because if it doesn't support that voltage the charger will blow up and die. You should be fine if it does blow up, as the fuse will cut off the circuit but it's still not a good thing to have whilst on holiday. :dodgy: To confirm it will accept all voltages look at the Input range which should be printed on the charger itself. If it says 100v-240v, you're good to go. If it only has one voltage and it doesn't match your destination country then you'll need to find a universal charger or a transformer to change the voltage. Secondly you'll need a physical plug adapter to match the wall power point in your destination country. These are sold just about everywhere, from your airport to the supermarket. If you're travelling to multiple different countries which use many different plugs you may want to consider a global power adapter. It's a BIG adapter that combines all the different plugs into the one adapter: If you're bringing a laptop charger, make sure it is a grounded adapter otherwise the third prong on your power plug won't fit as the grounded prong on the adapter will be missing. Hope this helps! Any questions or thoughts please add to the discussion below.
  25. Alright! Coffee or tea? Which do you drink more? I personally love Cappucinos, Flat Whites and Latte. Throughout my Europe holiday I enjoyed Nero Coffee throughout London, Starbucks Coffee in Amsterdam and Coffee Inn in Vilnius. Back home I love McCafe coffee. McCafe is in almost every McDonald's in Australia. How about you?
