  1. One of the places I worked there was this young guy, well actually he wasn't that young he was in his early 20's, who was desperately trying to look Very Grown Up, it was quite amusing to watch his antics. I must admit that I did wind him up on occasions by wearing a tie with Thunderbird 2 on it and having serious conversations with one of the other guys about programmes like Tom & Gerry and Top Cat. (To his mind I didn't act like a site manager should, but when it came to running the site I was more serious than he liked. ) When I was at school skipping school for ANY reason would have got me into SERIOUS trouble with my mother and the headmaster, it just wasn't worth the risk.
  2. The long cold January is finally over. Only February to get through now. 🙂

Did I mention that January and February are my least favourite months?

Sadly a certain overgrown rodent saw his shadow today locally

  3. Dry, bright, sunny and 11C. Hopefully things are looking up weather wise.
  4. Ah, yes. 16 to 18, the ages where everyone expects you to give up watching your favourite TV series because "you're too old for that stuff now". One of the best thing about growing older is being able to watch what you like and no one cares. You skipped school to watch Evangellion in one sitting?!! Well I can think of worse reasons to skip school.
  5. I agree with you about the length of recent anime series, since I took out my subscription to CR two months ago I've watched just over a dozen series most of which were made in the last couple of years and every one of them was only 12 or 13 episodes and several of those had stories which I thought would have been better told over 24 or 25 episodes. Some, it must be said did get a second season, but not many. Chihayafuru, the series I'm currently watching, is the first one with 25 episodes. As to fan service, this has been a feature of many anime series for as long as I've been watching anime. In some respects I think there was more fan service in anime in the 80's and 90's when it seemed that almost every episode had either a shower scene, a locker room scene, a girl wandering around in her underwear or managing to loose various items of clothing for no immediately discernable reason.
  6. Another question about Isekai occurs to me. I admit that this view is largely drawn from reading reviews and watching the odd YouTube clip rather than watching whole Isekai series, but why is it that just about every Isekai story is about someone who finds themselves transported to a time that resembles the medieval world of the English middle ages as popularised by the stories based on the Arthurian legends? I don't recall hearing of an Isekai where someone is transported to a world several centuries in the future. But I suppose that goes back to my earlier point about originality in story writing, it's far easier to write a story set in a time where there is a lot of background detail already known than to create a whole new world.
  7. This evening I started watching series 1 of Chihayafuru. This is a sports anime based around a Japanese card game called Karuta which requires a good memory to play as it's based on 100 traditional Japanese poems. Until I started watching this series I had no idea that there was such a card game or that it was a competitive sport and it's not a sport that I would have thought was interesting to watch. So far my opinion of the series is favourable, I found it interesting, and even exciting in places, to watch and it has a good cast of characters and good artwork and animation.
  8. Yes, I am. I think this is something to do with how some anime producers see their target demographic and it's probably easier to produce a generic Isekai or haremesque show than to produce something original with a good thoughtful and well thought out storyline.
  9. You may be some time then. I've not seen the anime, but I've got the manga and read it a couple of times.
  10. Welcome aboard. Pull up a cushion, or a chair if you prefer, and make yourself at home,
  11. I've always liked Gigabyte motherboards, my current board and the previous one were Gigabyte, although I have had ASUS and Supermicro boards in the past. But ultimately the choice comes down to which board offers the features I want at a price I can afford.
  12. I finished watching Holmes of Kyoto this evening. It's bit of a strange series. It features an artwork assessor named Kiyotaka Yagashira, who is called "Holmes" because it's a word play on his name, and a third year high school girl named Aoi Mashiro who he employs as an assistant in the shop he manages. At first it appears to be a mystery detective series with Holmes solving cases with Aoi's help, but we the viewer never get all the information we need to make a guess as to the answers, Holmes being a uncannily perceptive person who solves the case in minutes. Then it moves on to being about a series of tests or contests about assessing if an object or artwork is genuine or fake. After a while I came to the view that all the situations the pair find themselves in are just a device to tell the story of Holmes and Aoi's relationship and how it grows and develops over time. But there's really no resolution of this aspect. Overall it's an interesting series to watch with good artwork and animation, but ultimately the series is something and nothing.

  14. It's a bit dull and cloudy at the moment, but then again the the Sun is still not quite out of bed yet.
  15. I started watching Holmes of Kyoto this evening. It's a curious series about a guy who works as an assessor in an antiques shop and his female high school student assistant who go around solving mysteries. He's called "Holmes" not because it's his name but because it's a way of reading the kanji that form part of his name. It's an interesting and entertaining series, but "Holmes" is far too smart to be believable as a detective.
  16. This evening I finished Non Non Biyori. An interesting and entertaining little series, most of the humour comes from the dialogue and expressions of the characters so it's good fun to watch.
