“Is this a Tolkien character or the name of an antidepressant”? Harder than it sounds!

(with apologies to Tolkien fans everywhere of course)

Finally got a weekend off. Did some Minecraft and anime.. and laundry, but I’ll take what I can get. Thought I might have to go in early Monday for a test (computer systems, not COVID) but even that managed to miss me. Monday still sucks - when does it not? - but I feel like this was the first real weekend I’ve had in months.

Love that OP for Beyond the Boundary.I personally like that style of animation. It is well done visually, the lyrics complement the anime well, and that last line ...迷いながらも君を見つけたよ

Get some sun! Or at least take vitamin D supplements....

Half the people I play Minecraft with are "creative" and the other half are "survival". I need to find a mod or something that makes the area around the spawn point "creative", but only out to a radius of about 20 or so chunks. After that it is all "survival". Ideally the survival zone would start "easy" and eventually shade to "hard", again as a function of distance from spawn. Of course the nether and the end would be survival. (Gotta have some reason to venture out, right?)
If I had a mod like that I might be able to get everyone together to play on the same server.

Closing in on 1 million points and 200 WUs in Folding@Home. As I type this my computer is ranked 169,318th (of 2.6M). If it can get to a rank of 132,000 that would put it in the top 5%.
This on an 8-core 2700X. I'd love to see what one of those 32-core 3970X threadripper processors could do. Or better yet a 64-core 3990X. Unfortunately I don't have 4kilobucks to drop on a CPU.

Between Elon's "Private beta begins in ~3 months, public beta in ~6 months, starting with high latitudes"

and the FCC's ratification of WIFI6 ..

Yes. Rural areas is his stated primary target audience since they're under-served by the AT&Ts and Comcasts and TimeWrners out there. But any one who is disenchanted with the current monopolies is welcome as well.
And yes, pretty much everything he does is directly or indirectly related to setting up a permanent Mars colony. Starlink was started because he needed something big to justify all the launches he's been doing, and putting up 12,000 satellites is a good way to guarantee a steady supply of paying customers for Falcon, Falcon Heavy, and Starship. Of course the money has to come from somewhere, so "hey, how about we sell universal broadband while we're at it?". While putting up Starlink he'll be getting experience to do the same thing at Mars, where there's virtually no global communications infrastructure. Same reason he's taking people to the space station. He'll probably also be the commercial carrier for NASA when they go to the Moon. (He's already tried to get a NASA contract for a lunar landing, but Boeing and LockMart successfully lobbied against it on the grounds that they don't believe it can be done. Whereupon Musk said, "It may literally be easier to just land Starship on the moon than try to convince NASA that we can.") Again, more Mars practice. Solar panels and batteries for houses and power grids. Tunnel diggers. Internal combustion engines don't work on Mars, but electric cars would. It all fits together if you assume Mars as a background context. The man may be crazy, but he's crazy like a fox.

@leinwandname state-of-the-art vintage equipment!
@Illusion of Terra .. for some stuff we can do the VPN thing. Actually, for most of it ssh’s DISPLAY redirection (and a local x-server) is all that is needed for our monitoring tools. An RSA token and a web browser can be used for email access. The voice nets and some of the C&C links can’t be accessed from outside the critical/flight LAN however.

Spent the weekend rearranging furniture. Good news is my SIL can now work from home, which is good because she's got diabetes and high blood pressure, two red flags for complications for the virus infection. I need a break though. Been doing 3 people's jobs at work - AT work.. none of that "work from home" stuff for me - and I can't even remember the last time I had a day off. (Unless you count that couple days a couple/few months back when I had that vertigo episode.) Weekends are extremely precious to me atm.

If you ever feel in need of a smile then all you need to do is google quokka, and click on “images”. Just look at that face!
You're welcome.

Queuing up some more reading material, just in case..
(from Cornell’s arxiv.org database)
“The Silurian Hypothesis. If an industrial civilization had existed on Earth many millions of years prior to our own era, what traces would it have left and would they be detectable today? We summarize the likely geological fingerprint of the Anthropocene, and demonstrate that while clear, it will not differ greatly in many respects from other known events in the geological record. We then propose tests that could plausibly distinguish an industrial cause from an otherwise naturally occurring climate event.”
This ought to be good reading...

Los Angeles city has shut down bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, gyms, and fitness centers. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and food banks will remain open. Restaurants are allowed to serve take-out, but no dine-in service.
Santa Monica ordered the temporary closure of its pier.
Even some Las Vegas casinos are shutting down.
If nothing else the economic fallout from all this will be significant.

The filing deadline for California state taxes has been moved back two months to June 15th. When the government delays taking your money you know things are getting serious!

Not really a problem. I mean, if interest rates were anything like normal then yeah but these days my bank is only giving me 0.01% APY interest on savings anyway. Last year I only made about $6 in interest payments on *both* my savings and checking accounts combined. With most investments being so overpriced I'm not buying anything with it either. I do get a refund most times, but not enough to make a stink over.
