Recently came across the Japanse concept of 積ん読 (tsundoku) that perfectly describes the pile of reading material I've acquired. One can never have enough books...

  3. Got to go on my yearly trip to Ft. Irwin next week.  5 hr round trip drive to the middle of nowhere halfway to Vegas to spend 5 minutes getting my work badge renewed.  Was this trip really necessary?  :veryangry::veryangry::veryangry::veryangry:

Hope at least the weather clears by Monday.  💨 and 🌧 and maybe even ❄️ and 🧊 in the desert would make the trip “perfect”.

  4. Feeling very entertained at the moment..

  5. One of my co-workers just tested positive for C19.  😨   Fortunately he's on night shift and I haven't even seen him in almost a month, but our workspaces do somewhat overlap.  So far I've managed to stay healthy even in LA and even having to continue going to work several days a week.  If I get sick after all this I'm going to be quite annoyed.

Not that I have any time for that with the m20 landing coming up in about a month.  I haven't even seen a data flow diagram for EDL or post-landing ops yet, never mind done any training on it.

On top of that my tax person sent me a "friendly reminder" yesterday that taxes are coming up and I should make an appointment early this year, just in case.

    No pressure. 😱

OTOH I have to admit a week or 2 in bed sounds quite attractive at this point.  Except for that you-could-die part.  That would suck.

  6. 2021 just told 2020, “here, hold my beer”.

  9. Getting ready for the midnight toast.  Didn't have any champaign so I'm having to make do with what I have.   GTF out 2020!  🥃👍🥳🎉

And of course, Happy New Year to all...

  10. Oh sure.  It's all fun and games until someone invents the T-800.

Actually, this has a kind of Star Wars thing goin' on in my head too.

  11. I don't know about you all but personally.. 2020 sucked.

2021 isn't looking too good either.  That's the year that the movie Children of Men was set in, and the year that Kyle Reese from Terminator says he joined the human resistance.

Then comes Soylent Green in 2022.

    🙀

  12. Merry Christmas everyone!

  13. Currently listening to people in the other room say things like, "it broke the spatula", "I can't pack any more in there", and "I can't do this sober".  I think they're making cookies.   :D 🎄🍪

  14. We finally got our “new” Linux workstations out of the boxes where they’ve been sitting for the last year and installed!  CentOS 7 and a 3.10 kernel but I’ll take it.  It may be older tech - I’m running a 5.4 kernel at home - but it beats the Sun-branded ultra-80s they’re replacing.

  15. Cleaning up some of the leftover debris from last week's plumbing repairs and chopped out a ~3 foot section of pipe around the leaking section just to see how bad looked.  I could barely see down the length of the pipe due to all the mineral/rust build up!  Surprised that a) there was any flow at all through the ~25 foot stretch that I wound up replacing and b) it hadn't started leaking before this.  Well, at least I shouldn't have to worry about this particular stretch for another couple decades.

There were a couple of spots that were rusted and leaking in a drip, drip sort of way.  This section was the only one that was actually spraying water out a pinhole leak.

This run has been there at least since I moved in in ‘76 and I’d actually been planning to replace it last year but I didn’t get to it before the virus hit.  After that I didn’t want contractors coming in unless it were serious.  This section is all outside along a cinderblock wall from the house to the pool area in back so a few drips here and there weren’t a problem in and of themselves.  The leak in this section was another matter however.

  16. Too much to do but still dedicating a few cycles to monitoring this morning's SpaceX hop in the background ...

2nd try was a RUD on landing.  Very Kerbal.  Looks like it ran out of fuel just a few yards short of the landing pad...

Elon tweeted: "Fuel header tank pressure was low during landing burn, causing touchdown velocity to be high & RUD, but we got all the data we needed! Congrats SpaceX team hell yeah!!"  Not a successful test unless you find a problem, right?  :)

Always feel out of sync returning to a regular work week after a holiday :P

Made even worse because I was off Thursday, half day Friday & then 2 days off.

I (finally) got a couple additional days off this week so I'm already on my weekend.  Had to spend it getting estimates for and scheduling some semi-emergency plumbing work but I'll take what I can get.

There’s the work you get paid to do & then there’s the work you don’t get paid for but still have to do 😂 Spent a good part of my weekend on car maintenance which will hopefully save me some trouble once winter begins in earnest.

  18. Getting close to the 10 million mark, score-wise.   But then what?  🤔

  19. Hayabusa-2 is coming back Sunday (Japan time) with a piece of Ryugu!

  20. Going through old stuff to make space for new stuff.  Exhibit 1.. a well-used “Aeronautical Vest-Pocket Handbook” ©️1959 complements of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co .. trig tables, elemental properties, conversion tables, tables of physical constants, graphs showing relationships between various aeronautic/engineering variables.  Clearly a pre-Google, pre Wikipedia  artifact.  :)

  21. Gotta say, 4 people on a single rocket is going to make this exciting all by itself.

  22. Passed 1000 work units folded in Folding@Home.  Actually passed the milestone a little while back but I didn't notice until now since it just does its thing in the background.

Next goal/milestone looks like maybe a score of 10 million points.  No idea what a "point" means in F@H terms but that's a lot of zeros so it's gotta mean something, right?  :)  Currently at 8.6M so only 1.4M to go.  My "old" Ryzen 7 2700X can clear about 150k/day if I let it off the leash (and no GPU support from my RX480 unfortunately) so in theory that's only about 10 days.  If I actually use my computer for anything or if I have to throttle it back due to warmer weather then it'll be less.  Practically speaking it'll probably be more like a month.

  23. I dooded the deed.  Kind of pointless since I know either Biden or Trump will win but if I don't vote then I can't complain, right?  Pitiful selection this time, as usual.  I almost wrote-in the name of the guy with a boot on his head but since he didn't get the nomination I instead went for the guy whose running mate was initially the running mate of the guy with the boot on his head.  I'd have voted Green again but I wrote to them last time about their stupid anti-nuclear stance and got back a nonsense reply so I went back to the other guys for this cycle.

All I can say is I hope SpaceX's Starship testing goes well.  I need a few AU of hard vacuum and lethal radiation between me and D.C. ASAP.

So totally with you one this. I blame mass media and whatever else. Like people don't realize that you don't have to vote for the two major parties and at the same I feel it's pointless but this is what I don't get if it really didn't matter why put the other parties on the ballot. I think if enough people actually voted for someone other than dem or rep maybe just maybe someone else could win. Idk really for sure but I feel everyone is so locked in on these two parties.

People vote the way they're supposed to.  For some it takes reverse psychology or other tricks.  "Don't waste your vote" is just another one of the viral memes they use.  If people thought about it for a couple seconds they'd realize it is BS, but they don't.  In the end it amounts to most people voting the way they're told to vote.
