  1. We can't not mention Mayoiga. That series is so bad that there is a conspiracy theory going around that it was deliberately awful, and then another spin-off conspiracy theory that it was deliberately awful to present a super in-depth message that no one understood because it was awful. We had a ton of fun with it trying to theorise about what the hell was happening, and managed to find all of these completely meaningless and incorrect links to things like The Divine Comedy. It's definitely one that you should watch with friends though. Watching it alone is probably really boring.
  2. Isn't that Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs?
  3. There's always Fate. There's a lot of seasons, so here's a 'watch order' for you, although the vast majority of them are either spin-offs or standalone series. There are only 3 'main' Fate series: Fate/Zero (2 seasons) https://myanimelist.net/anime/10087/Fate_Zero?q=fate%2Fzero https://myanimelist.net/anime/11741/Fate_Zero_2nd_Season?q=fate%2Fzero Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (2 seasons) Please make sure to watch the TV version, not the movie. https://myanimelist.net/anime/22297/Fate_stay_night__Unlimited_Blade_Works?q=ubw https://myanimelist.net/anime/28701/Fate_stay_night__Unlimited_Blade_Works_2nd_Season Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel (3 movies) https://myanimelist.net/anime/25537/Fate_stay_night_Movie__Heavens_Feel_-_I_Presage_Flower?q=heaven%27s%20feel https://myanimelist.net/anime/33049/Fate_stay_night_Movie__Heavens_Feel_-_II_Lost_Butterfly?q=heaven%27s%20feel https://myanimelist.net/anime/33050/Fate_stay_night_Movie__Heavens_Feel_3?q=heaven%27s%20feel Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works can be watched in any order, but you must watch Fate/Zero before Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel. The rest of Fate are all spin-offs, and have very varying quality. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya: A magical girl series starring Illya from Fate/Stay Night. The order is: Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei! Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei Herz! Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!! Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya Movie: Sekka no Chikai Fate/Apocrypha: A spin-off about a team battle between two groups of Servants and Masters. This really isn't very good. Fate/Extra: Last Encore: A spin-off about whatever the hell this series is about. This REALLY isn't very good. Carnival Phantasm: A sketch comedy show staring a bunch of characters from Fate, as well as a few other series that are set in the same universe. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan: A cooking show in which the Fate characters all sit down for a nice meal. Should be watched after you've completed all of the 'main' Fate series. Fate/Stay Night (2006): This is technically a part of the main Fate series, but it's really badly made, and Unlimited Blade Works mostly patches the gaps. Skip this, unless you particularly like the memes. Fate/Grand Order: These are related to the mobile game. If you don't intend on playing that, then there's not much point in watching these. The order is: Fate/Grand Order: First Order (a prologue to the game) Fate/Grand Order: Camelot (an anime adaptation of one of the later chapters of the game) Fate/Grand Order: Babylonia (an anime adaptation of another chapter of the game) Kara no Kyoukai: This is a series of 8 movies set in the same world as Fate. The order is mostly self-explanatory. Tsukihime: Another series set in the same world as Fate. Don't watch this. Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note: A mystery series starring an adult version of Waver Velvet from Fate/Zero. You must have watched Fate/Zero first.
  4. That sounds like Dorei-ku: The Animation, but honestly, we thought it was really bad, so we'll recommend that you watch either Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, or Mahjong Legend Akagi instead. They are also darkish gambling anime, but they're way better.
  5. Of the options available, Mob Psycho 100 S2. There's absolutely no competition, the second season was just a massive improvement over an already very good series, and introduced a ton of character development, and a proper overarching plot. It was really good, and we'd strongly recommend it to basically anyone. What's missing from the poll though, is My Roommate is a Cat. We weren't expecting Cat to be a good show. We were actually expecting it to be a really crap pandering show that we would drop after three episodes, and we only picked it up in the first place because we have cats of our own. My Roommate is a Cat looks like a dumb comedy/slice of life, and it is, but only on a surface level. It hides a strikingly well written story about a man getting over the death of his parents, and reintegrating with society, and a cat getting over the death of her siblings, and relearning to care for another. We'd never say that it's as good as 3-gatsu no Lion or Clannad, but if you like those series, and the development of their protagonists, go and watch My Roommate is a Cat. Also, Haru the cat genuinely won an end of season best girl poll. This is not a meme poll, this was 100% genuine, and god damn did she deserve it. https://anitrendz.net/charts/female-characters/2019-03-28
  6. That would be Flip Flappers. It was 2016 we think, but it was really good.
  7. Unfortunately there are incredibly few good action romance anime. There's nothing wrong with the genre combination, and it by all rights should be great, but it just isn't. As Beocat said, the lack of an ending is normally the issue. Having said that though, here are a few that are good. Twin Star Exorcists Two young exorcists are told that they are the "Twin Star Exorcists", and that they are destined to give birth to the most powerful exorcist ever. They absolutely hate each other though. Twin Star Exorcists is about them getting to know each other better, while protecting the world from demons called Kegare. Scrapped Princess The princess of a kingdom is abandoned at birth because she is prophesied to become effectively the antichrist on her 16th birthday. Skip forward 15 years, and the "Scrapped Princess" is found to be alive, and living with her adopted siblings. The three of them then go on the run to escape from all of the armies of the world, while trying to work out how not to destroy the planet. The romance in this series is basically all in the last quarter or so, and isn't exactly standard, but its still a great series that we really wish more people would watch. Katanagatari A tactician finds a swordsman who uses no sword, and asks him to go on a journey with her to find 12 legendary swords and present them to the shogunate. This is quite a talky series, but damn is it well animated during the fights. It has really well written characters too. Zero no Tsukaima This was also mentioned by Beocat. A guy is summoned to a magical world as the familiar of a witch who can barely use magic. Insert saving the world type stuff here. Zero is actually a lot better than you might expect. It's one of literally two series in the entire harem genre that we will recommend to people. It has 4 seasons, a properly conclusive ending that actually wraps up the romance, and is one of the very few isekai anime to deal with actually going home. That should do for now.
  8. We're in the UK, so our Prime and Netflix libraries are probably somewhat different from yours (we're assuming you're from the US), and we have no idea what's on Hulu, but here are some that we really like. Prime: Shinsekai Yori - people develop psychic powers, lots of bad thins happen, humanity almost goes extinct, and then society regresses to small villages. Some kids from a village get curious about the outside world. Great Teacher Onizuka - Ex-motorbike gang leader decides he wants to become a teacher because he thinks girls look cute in school uniforms. Feelgood comedy about his class rejecting him, while he tries to get their acceptance. Kuzu no Honkai - Two students are in love with their teachers, but can't date them for obvious reasons, so they date each other while pretending to be the teachers. Lots of sex scenes, but they're all really important to the plot. There isn't a single sex scene that is there just to be erotic, and the majority of them actively avoid trying to be erotic. Really serious drama about cheating, and one of our all time favourites. Fune wo Amu - A guy gets a job compiling a dictionary. So much better than that sounds, and also has some good romance. Princess Tutu - An author turns a duck into the fantastical Princess Tutu, and has her find the shards of a prince's heart through the power of ballet. If you're at all familiar with the original Grimm's fairytales, it's kind of like those. For example, in the original Cinderella, the ugly sisters cut of their heal and toes to fit in the shoe, then get their eyes pecked out by birds, and the step-mother is forced to dance until she dies of exhaustion. This is not a girly series, even if it first seems like it. It's also our all time favourite. Netflix: Little Witch Academia - Basically Harry Potter: The Anime, but by the people who made Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann. High Score Girl - Romance about kids growing up in the 90s playing arcade games. And we're talking about the actual ones, Street Fighter II, Final Fight, and Virtua Fighter. This was probably our favourite anime of 2018. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan - A guy with a bunch of superpowers including teleportation, mind reading, time travel, and invisibility tries to be as normal as possible, because if people find out he has powers, they'll ask him to do stuff for them, and that's a pain. Violet Evergarden - Girl is brought up during war on the battlefield, and knows nothing other than the orders of her commander. Her commander dies during the final mission of the war, and she is left in the care of the commander’s friend, who owns a post office. She decides to be a ghost writer so she can learn more about the emotions that she never knew. There are also a bunch of movies that are definitely worth watching, especially A Silent Voice, In This Corner of the World, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children.
  9. It was put on Netflix on Christmas Eve, yes. They have it both dubbed and subbed, but their subs are sometimes late, so they appear a few seconds after the character has started speaking.
  10. So it didn't really catch us off guard, because we were fully expecting it to be good, but if there's one hidden gem this year, it's High Score Girl. High Score Girl is a romance series about kids growing up in the 90s playing arcade games like Street Fighter II, Final Fight, and Splatterhouse. The thing that really made the show though are the three main characters. It's rally hard to explain them (especially Ono, because she has a character trait that sounds entirely bad, but works ridiculously well), but they were just so real. They behaved like normal people, rather than caricatures, and it resulted in an absolutely amazing series. If you have not watched it yet, please, go and watch High Score Girl.
  11. Best of the year probably goes to Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho. As much as we want to say that second place beats it, Sora Yori was just too good. It was exciting, emotional, had a great soundtrack and characters, and was just thoroughly enjoyable. Second place is probably our favourite of the year, and absolutely no one watched it. It's called High Score Girl, and it's a romance set in the 90s, where the protagonists are kids who play arcade games such as Street Fighter II, Final Fight, and Splatterhouse (the actual games, with real footage. This isn't a WcRonalds case). The characters were just unbelievably good in this series, and one of them doesn't even speak. She's probably the most interesting character too. The other ones worth mentioning are SSSS.Gridman, which was a homage to tokusatsu series like Ultraman, Bloom Into You, which was an ACTUALLY GOOD yuri series, Golden Kamuy, which was an action adventure show with a lot of cooking scenes, and some really interesting history, and Hinamatsuri, which was a really heart warming family comedy. If there was one series from this year that we could recommend to people, it would be High Score Girl.
  12. In terms of Christmas anime, The movie Tokyo Godfathers is probably your best bet. It's about three homeless men who find an abandoned baby on Christmas eve and have to find its parents. It's actually based on the same story as Ice Age, the Pixar movie, and plays out similarly. White Album 2 is indeed a good call. Do note that you do not also need to get White Album 1. The only link between them is that they are set in the same school, other than that they may as well be completely different series. White album 1 is also no where near as good. Amagami SS is a decent Christmas anime if you can find it. It's basically six short romance stories set just before Christmas.
  13. This guy is called Masaru Yokoyama. We believe him to be the best composer in anime. Better than Sawano, better than Kanno, and better than Penkin. https://myanimelist.net/people/7520/Masaru_Yokoyama?q=Masaru yoko Watch your way through his stuff. Do note though that while they may have good music, some of these series absolutely suck. In particular, we're going to mention Kuzu no Honkai and his absolute best soundtrack ever, Queen's Blade. Examples in the spoiler below. In terms of actual anime quality, Kuzu no Honkai is right up there. We consider it to be the best anime in years, although some people don't like the subject matter, because it's not exactly nice and fluffy. Queen's Blade is harder to recommend as a series, because honestly, it's not great. It does however have a weird amount of effort put into its world building, so it has a really amazing setting, and its soundtrack is absolute god tier. Listen to the soundtrack even if you decide against watching the anime. It's all on YouTube. If you're looking for songs with English lyrics like Sky Show though, that's a lot more difficult, mostly due to the fact that anime isn't English. SukaSuka (What Are You Doing at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?) had a few, including a really amazing cover of Scarborough Fair, and was also a pretty good series. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is also worth mentioning. It's basically an hour long Daft Punk music video, which is pretty cool. We're also going to mention Princess Principal, since it had a great OP. If you stretch to songs in other languages, there's a whole host of idol shows. We'll mention Symphogear in particular, because it has a wide variety of musical genres, not just pop, and is really damn cool. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko and Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho had some great insert songs, and 3-gatsu no Lion had a French one. Once again, videos in the spoiler below. That should do you for now. Shout if you want more though.
  14. We're going to guess that it's this. If not, do you have any idea how old it is? https://myanimelist.net/anime/35712/Boku_no_Kanojo_ga_Majimesugiru_Sho-bitch_na_Ken?q=shobit
  15. A bit of Google searching brings up Kurokami.
