  1. Stand alone anime movies have been mentioned in several threads recently, but what are some of your favorite movies based on an anime series or that are part of a series of it’s own?

    For me:

    Project A-ko (the original)

    Ranma 1/2: Nihao my Concubine

Little Witch Academia + The Enchanted Parade

Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro

    Dirty Pair: Project Eden

    The Evangelion Rebuild movies

    Trigun: Badlands Rumble

  2. Episode 21 - still some unfinished business to take care of before moving on to the next arc. We finally get Rui’s backstory

I’m glad they didn’t entirely absolve him of his actions, though he still gets his moment of redemption &  you wind up hating the main villain even more for ruining so many lives.  It also allows Tanjiro to continue showing his compassionate side. Unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be a common trait among some demon hunters. And now Tanjiro has to convince the leaders that Nezuko doesn’t pose a threat. Don’t think it’s going to be easy

  3. Season 2 episode 5 (still behind)

A rather fun transitional episode as Hestia Familia move into their new home and welcome their new members. LOTS of fanservice, but some of it was actually clever

flipping the gender roles in the typical bathhouse scene with the gals eavesdropping/peeping on the guys. And a bromance moment of Welf commenting on Bell’s muscles getting bigger instead of the usual yuri conversation about boobs

    🤣

But the episode ends on a somber note as the stage is set for the next arc, though the episode title suggests the fanservice will continue.

  4. I don’t believe the first 2 OVAs are licensed in the US. I watched them on Youtube, but the picture was only about a third of the screen and terrible quality. I was hoping they would be extras on season 2 or 3 disc release, but nope. A shame because I enjoyed them both.

I haven’t seen the 3rd OVA. I suppose the movie really wasn’t that bad, it just didn’t feel all that special because the awesomeness of the tv series spoiled me. I was also feeling over hyped because it was the first time I’d seen a non-Ghibli anime in a theater.

Edit: seems I was wrong. Don’t see the third OVA listed as an extra either.

Yotsuba best. I've been reading the manga for a while, so I probably have a different opinion than people who have only seen the anime.

    I doubt she'll "win", though.

I liked what I saw of her, unfortunately season 1 didn’t advance her past the genki girl stereotype and didn’t seem to treat her like a legitimate contender. I think they only dedicated half an episode to her and it didn’t seem well executed

being bad at lying if I remember correctly

    which irked me.

I think the mangas better. It develops the characters well. I still don’t know who the bride is.

I imagine the  whole mistaken identity angle probably worked better in the manga where the differences in appearances wouldn’t be as noticeable.  My biggest criticism of the anime is how they kept using that but executed it so poorly (she’s wearing headphones, so it must be Miku; wearing a ribbon must be Yotsuba even though the hair colors and styles were nothing alike)

  6. I’m pretty much in agreement with @Musuko‘s points.

Probably the biggest point for me is that a lot of movies fall into the ultra-dramatic tearjerker category which tends to be too heavy for me.

Another point I’ll bring up is in a movie if you don’t like the main character/couple, you’re pretty much screwed since the limited run time means they’re generally front and center through out. There are numerous series where I actually prefer the side or supporting characters to the mains. A series can manage to give them enough attention scattered throughout and maybe an episode or 2 of their own. Generally a movie can’t do that.

    Advantages movies have over series:

    1) Usually higher production values (animation, art, soundtrack)

    2) Less of a time investment

    3) More likely to get the attention of people who don’t usually watch anime

    4) Less filler (though I personally feel that filler episodes can be very entertaining and sometimes even offer insight when they’re done right)

I thought this about how much you can lift in real life. Though I have 35 pound dumbbells.  The guys look like they are from Baki the grappler

Just found out this series is actually by the same mangaka as Kengan Ashura & is supposed to take place in the same world. Totally different style of show though :P .  Kure-sensei is the mother of one of Kengan Ashura’s characters

  8. So far they’ve kinda portrayed Arthur as an idiot with a Don Quixote complex (considers himself to be a knight). I think the series has definite potential if they would do some world building and be more coherent with the narrative. But right now it seems more concerned with action sequences and looking cool. Also seems like they feel the need to include some fanservice every  ep  even when it feels out of place, which I’ve seen sone people complain about.

  9. As long as you watched the first season of Danmachi you should be fine without Orartorio. I hadn’t made any further progress since my last post , so I’m behind. First arc was a mixed bag for me. Liked the set up for it and the side story involving Lili, but the resolution of the Wargame could’ve been better IMO. Next arc sounds like it could be ecchi as Bell gets abducted by an amazon familia (gee, poor guy 🥰)

Kipling was my first thought as well.  :)

Sorry to go off topic but ...

While I became aware of it being part of The Jungle Book collection of stories later,  my first exposure was the Chuck Jones animated version when I was a kid. I remember it and The White Seal being much darker than the usual “cartoon”
