  1. Welcome, glad you’re checking us out.

Sometimes the masterpieces/classics can be disappointing while a series you have little or no expectations for can surprise you. I try to keep an open mind and try a bit of everything except hentai (some regular series can blur the line enough as is anymore).

    Hope you stick around.

There may be a simpler way but type spoiler surrounded by square brackets [ ] at the start of the text you want to hide. And then type /spoiler surrounded by square brackets [ ] at the end.

Sorry if this explanation is confusing, but it kept treating it as a spoiler when I typed it :P

For what it’s worth I wasn’t able to get into Angel Beats and dropped it when I tried watching it several years ago. I may give it another chance someday.

  3. While episodes 1 & 2 are all cuteness and charm, it shows a darker side with episode 3. And episode 4 is a bit hard to watch at times (just so I don’t frighten anyone off with a misunderstanding, it has to deal with bullying and prejudice). While not totally unexpected it was still pretty jarring. Also, people familiar with the source material have been hinting at later developments I would not be OK with. I’m not putting too much stock in that since people said the same thing about Shield Hero, but something to be aware of.

Again, not trying to frighten anyone off as I am continuing to watch it for now & it could actually turn out to be a more substantive series than it appeared at first while still being heartwarming. Just don’t be lulled too much  by the tone of the first two eps. Definitely not going to be just cutesy fluff.

  4. Welcome glad you decided to check things out here.

I think the only actual yuri romance series I’ve seen was an older series called Strawberry Panic. There was a more recent series called Citrus, but I haven’t seen it. Of course there are a number of series where a yuri relationship is at least implied Flip Flappers comes to mind, which was a magical girl series. Very creative visually, but also weird (kind of dream like)

Anyway, hope you decide to stay & join in.

  5. The currently airing Demon Lord Retry might qualify. The bad part is pretty much a given. While intentionally not taking itself very seriously & a lot of parody explains the story/writing, it also has pretty poor production values. As far as the good ... well it does manage to be kinda amusing at times, though the humor is getting raunchier especially now that they introduced the trap character (not really a spoiler considering that his on screen stats list him as a “girly boy” 🤣

Not sure if anyone's watched it, but I think it's shounen: I LOVED Gundum Wing. Holy crap. That was my jam! Giant robots, drama, action and a smattering of politics (but not like, real politics, ew!) I want to re-watch it.

Wing was the Gundam series I made it the furthest on, with the possible exception of Iron Blooded Orphans. Still never managed to finish one though.

  7. Welcome, glad you found your way here 😁

Recently there have been a number of old-school anime that have gotten remakes/updates. Some of my personal favorites include Dororo, Fruits Basket, Ushio & Tora and Star Blazers 2199/2202.    Pretty sure SSS Gridman had it’s basis in an older series.  think I saw where Orphen is in the works. I haven’t watched much of Sailor Moon Crystal (my understanding is that it starts out disappointing but gets better and so far has adapted up to the Sailor Moon S part of the series i.e. Sailor Saturn). We also finally got an official English release of the original Sailor Stars season i.e. the Sailor Starlights.

You mentioned several of Satoshi Kon’s works which tend to have complex, strange, psychological stories so maybe try Beautiful Bones, Boogiepop & Others (includes a retelling of the original series), Durarara & Baccano.

Finally, since you also mention Gurren Lagann maybe try Darling in the Franxx.

I could go on & on, but I’ve rambled enough (hope I didn’t tire you out). Anyway, hope you like it enough here to stay & participate

Seeing that you enjoyed Durarara, I’d like to make some recommendations  (all have a large cast of “interesting” characters with intertwined stories: Baccano, Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens, Paranoia Agent. The currently airing The Ones Within seems like it could be headed that direction, but it’s too soon to tell.

  9. I’m finding it pretty entertaining. Enough of the jokes work for me to keep it a decent comedy. And the fanservice isn’t overly ecchi most of the time. I could see some people complaining about it putting too much attention on body image for girls, but considering that the dudes look like they escaped from Attack on Titan I don’t think it’s too unequal 🤣

The surprise is how much time it spends trying to educate and promote healthy habits as well as providing so exercise tutorials that actually sound legit.

I really only watch dubbed, because my vision is crap and I have a hard time seeing it and straining my eyes to read it then I end up with headaches. There have only been a few animes I've watched subbed and that was only because I really, really wanted to watch them.

I’m actually the opposite as I have some difficulty hearing clearly sometimes. It’s annoying when I have to pause because multiple people are speaking and/or their are signs that need translating. The worst is when the color of the captions blend in with the background though.

As far as style, I generally prefer subtitled. There are exceptions though. The dub version of the currently airing The Ones Within seems to be slightly more over the top which works better with the weirdness & comedy. If the story becomes more serious later, that could change. Some other exceptions:

Cowboy Bebop - The english voices just seem to match the characters perfectly in every case.

Steel Angel Kurumi - this is a case where I actually like the changes the english cast made to the dialogue & personalities.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 & 2202 - there’s probably some nostalgia here since Star Blazers was my first anime series. Of course the modern translation/dub is vastly superior.

  12. This series just keeps getting better & better (actually going to bump it up a point on MAL after watching this week’s ep). Very powerfully written dealing with the kind if life Uo was living prior to meeting Tohru. We normally see Uo & Hana acting as Tohru’s support network, but we were given some insight as to how Tohru has also acted as a lifeline and why she’s so precious to them.

In addition to all the well written drama, we also get some enjoyable not ecchi fanservice with the girls in swimsuits. And some very funny moments. It comes naturally for Shigure & Kyo, but also liked the trio of delinquent wannabes. Especially

the after credit scene of them getting freaked out by Momiji (don’t know exactly what he said, but apparently something about liking hamburgers)

Looks like next week will be a continuation

  13. I feel your pain, up to 3 years ago streaming wasn’t an option for me due to unreliable internet connection where I lived. Having to rely on what was on tv or buying/renting discs made it hard to watch series.
