I am, for several reasons, in majority familiar with anime via Netflix.

Their anime library actually has increased considerably in quantity & quality over the past year in particular. The latest title I started there was Delicious in Dungeon, but 6 episodes in I’ve yet to see what all the hype is supposed to be about so I put it on hold.

  2.  I may have to re-evaluate my expectations for this season, because of the 6 new show premieres I’ve seen so far, I’ve only disliked 1.

    Continued first impressions:

Red Cat Ramen - wasn’t expecting this to have full length episodes but having thoroughly enjoyed the first episode & been pleasantly surprised by series like Masterful Cat & ‘Tis Time for “Torture”, Princess I’m actually pretty hopeful for it. Kenjiro Tsuda & Saori Hayami lend star power & are perfect for their roles. I was genuinely surprised that the human MC wasn’t Hayami because the voice sounded very similar to me. I enjoyed the OP & ED as well.

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian - I felt like the 2 leads had a better dynamic than the typical “teasing” series (kind of a mix between Love is War & Bunny Girl Senpai). Visually nice. Some of it felt kinda fetish-y though.

The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible - First ep made me lol more than a lot of comedies’ entire cour, but not sure if it’ll be able to keep it up a whole season. Expect it to live or die solely based on if I continue to find it funny. I actually like the OP song 😅

Yeah, I know the first ep of Oshi no Ko season 2 premiered & I do intend to watch, but thinking I’ll wait so I can binge at least the early eps.

  3. Welcome 😁 Hope you find things to interest you here & decide to stick around.

If you enjoyed Kotaro Lives Alone you might want to check out Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai as the character Gakuto is very similar.

  4. Made it through episode 7 of Tonari no Yokai-san but regretfully it’s becoming a chore to continue. My initial motivation for watching was my curiosity/interest in yokai/folklore & it certainly stands out as something “different” than other anime. But it’s determination to try at look at every philosophical angle without legitimizing or discrediting gets frequently tedious & feels pretentious. There’s a difference in acknowledging complexity and being open minded & “navel gazing”.  Likewise it’s overall message seems to be one of living in the moment, but it continually riffs on the past & future. While I have avoided specific spoilers, comments I’ve seen suggest there are some surprising “twists” to come, but at this point I question if any potential pay off is worth additional time invested.

So I’m setting it aside for now to see what the Spice & Wolf remake does for me. Guess that’s “my truth of the moment” 😏

And I’ll continue to sample shows from the Summer season.

finish The Duke of Death & his Maid season 3 (final season)

Finished last night. While the series never fully overcame some of the tonal elements that felt awkward to me, the final season put forth it’s best efforts & gave it an enjoyable enough resolution. Season 3 score 7/10. Overall series score 6.5/10.

In addition to resuming Tonari no Yokai-san, I’ll probably watch the premiere ep of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian  as part of my relaxation period this evening.

Not here to be long winded or anything

Afraid I’m not going to be so considerate 😂 Likewise though, I’m not familiar with the source material, so my impressions are based on the anime’s 1st season only.

As you pointed out, this is pretty much a perfect shonen anime, despite the protag being in his early 30s trying to keep up with comrades  a decade younger. Indeed one of the complaints I saw most from MAL users was that he was too goofy acting & not enough of an adult. I think this is largely because the synopsis is for a humanbeing inside a monster’s body, which makes them think of edgy series like Attack on Titan or Chainsaw Man. Make no mistake there is a lot of violence, blood & guts, though sometimes it’s more of a gross-humor thing. And judging from the OP you might think edgy is a good description.

But that’s not the case. Kafka (the MC) is a big ole lovable dork with a knack for saying/doing embarrassing things. But that also means he’s willing to swallow his pride to do contribute to the team while still striving to improve himself. While his teammates refer to him as “The Old Guy” and sometimes laugh at him, they know they can count on him & admire him for his heart. So while the ED might not seem to fit, it actually does

The animation of the action & fight scenes is top notch and there’s actually some decent worldbuilding with more to come I’m sure. The biggest weakness is the characters are still pretty undeveloped at this stage but I’m expecting this to change. For example the final ep actually did give some nuance to character that gave an early impression of being unlikable. Overall this is actually a very positive series where I have no reservations about rooting for the MC & it’s something I desperately needed after JJK’s Shibuya Incident arc.

I scored 9/10. Runner up for my Anime of the Season 2024. Currently my #3 for the year, practically guaranteed to be in my Top 5 for 2024.

  8. The retro revival continues

honestly not sure how to feel about this given the lack of details at this point. Both seasons of the original tv series are in my all time favorites & I think it’s my favorite CLAMP series overall. Updated visuals (like they did with the Sailor Moon Crystal movies) might be nice, but I’m hoping they don’t attempt a sequel after all this time given my impression of CCS Clear Card & Yashahime. And I didn’t like the alternate storyline OVA  at all.

Honestly not much on my radar yet. Will continue to watch MHA & Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction on CR & Blue Archive on it’s youtube channel. Will resume Reincarnated as a Slime 3 at some point. Plan on watching season 2 of Oshi no Ko & The Cafe Terrace & it’s Goddesses. Plan to rewatch season 1 of Tower of God before starting season 2.

First impressions of what I’ve watched so far:

Suicide Squad Isekai - entertaining enough & I’ve already watched 3 of 10 episodes, so sure I’ll finish.

The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army Was a Human - will stay with it for now

My Wife Has No Emotion - first ep was nonstop cringe. Perhaps I’m being unfair, but doubt I’ll even attempt any more.

  10. Finished Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc
Final episode score: 9/10. Overall season score 7/10.
Visually breathtaking, but at least half the character exploration felt like extended “Taisho Era Secret” segments. Perhaps to be expected since it was a short transitional arc.
And yes, I’m sure I’ll be paying to see the movies 😤

    Expected viewing schedule through mid-week:

finish The Duke of Death & his Maid season 3 (final season)

    finish Tonari no Yokai-san

    sample Spice & Wolf remake

  11. “I finally get it. I’ve realized I was still a kid, just a brat using old memories to act grown-up. Now I’m a parent with a kid of my own, so I figure I need to grow up fast. But I’m sure I’ll fail plenty more times. I’ve got to change little by little, worrying the whole time. I can’t become an adult any other way. Is’t that how you did it? I’ll work hard.  I’ll protect what you left behind, like you did for me. Well, see you again. Next time I’ll bring the whole family. “ - Rudeus Greyrat, Mushoku Tensei II part 2 episode 12

  12. “It’s true that I’m a genius, but when you consider the whole world, I’m probably not as special as you might think. But still … I’ll always be by your side, no matter what happens. I promise you. If something terrible happens we won’t have much of a choice but to accept it as our new reality. If that’s the case, do you know what the best thing to do is so you don’t lose hope? Protect one person. You can’t worry about everyone. Just one is enough. You’ll have to make sure you protect that person to the very, very end. That strong feeling will become your strength, you understand? And so with that in mind: Who will you protect?” - Hiroshi Nakagawa, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction episode 5

  13. Finished Wind Breaker. Clearly intended to be a delinquents with hearts of gold series to tug on the viewer’s heartstrings. Unfortunately the characters seem to have gimmicks instead of personalities. As result I didn’t find them particularly endearing or entertaining. The season’s pacing seemed odd too, somehow managing to end on a cliffhanger that didn’t actually feel  exciting. The action & fight sequences were pretty cool though. Honestly not sure if I’ll invest any time on season 2 next year.

  14. Suicide Squad Isekai episodes 1-3 on Hulu. Actually found it pretty entertaining 😂 Knew going in  it would be more about style & irreverence than substance & originality. Though I ‘m sure there will be some relevance to

Harley & the princess being lookalikes

Clayface is the the character they modified the most to fit an anime personality & is my fave. Biggest criticism is the animation was actually pretty janky a lot of times (surprising since WIT is supposed to be handling it). I think James Gunn’s 2021 Suicide Squad movie is a pretty good litmus test for whether you’ll enjoy it ( not a direct sequel or anything though)

I watched an unusual anime the other day, it's called Girls' Last Tour. It takes place in a world where almost the entire population has been wiped out following some unexplained apocalypse and and follows the adventures of two young girls as they journey through the ruins of civilisation in their trusty Kettenkrad, which is a rather neat half-track motorcycle built by the Germans in WW II.
The city they are exploring has many different levels and as they find strange places, some of which are derelict and decaying others are still functioning and have a high level of technology.

There's not much in the way of storyline and each episode consists of two or three incidents which are only connected with each other by the fact that they are events along the way in the girl's journey. As befits an abandoned city, the background artwork is drab and dull, and even dark in some places, but it conveys the atmosphere of a decaying city very well. The background music is excellent has a haunting style that fits the visuals perfectly.

It would be easy to give up on this series after a couple of episodes, but in doing so you'd miss out on a series that is both unique and intriguing.

I watched that a while back too.   Kind of slow and there was a lot of strange stuff that was never adequately explained before moving on but ultimately an entertaining series.

It’s definitely more of a “mood” series than a story one. Stands out as being a rather unique niche. As stated, overall enjoyable but a bit gloomy to be one of my go-to relax/destress/recover series

That would be Yuru Camp. Recently finished season 3. The new “softer” character designs took some getting used to & I don’t feel like the nature scenes meshed as well, but remains charming. Amazing that I still want another season despite following it’s usual formula. But it gave some “B” characters some attention & mixed up the pairings to emphasize new dynamics (Rin/Ayano). And even introduced a couple potential newcomers.

  16. Itinerary through the weekend:

    Finish Mysterious Disappearances

    Finish Wind Breaker

    Finish Kaiju No. 8

Finish Mushoku Tensei II part 2

    Finish Go! Go! Loser Ranger

Finish Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc

Finish Duke of Death & his Maid season 3

  17. My introduction to anime was Star Blazers back in the 70s/80s. In addition to changing all the characters names to sound more western (Derek Wildstar, Nova Forrester, etc.), the most blatant change was renaming the ship  from Yamato to Argo. In case you didn’t  know, the Yamato was a WW2 Japanese battleship that was sunk by the US & a symbol of national pride to Japan (which made it kind of an odd choice anime to adapt into a kids’ cartoon in America). When the 2199/2202 remake movies were released in the US, they still called it Star Blazers for nostalgia purposes, but at least they used the Japanese names for the characters & ship. I remember reading about numerous other changes like the doctor drinking juice/soda/milk instead of booze, but it was fairly obvious what it actually was.

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.- I've seen a lot of comments about this one, most of them favourable, so I guess it's worth a look.

I’m planning to give it a look as well.
