    Too many cringy scenes

I continue to find it to be the most enjoyable “new” show of the season (honorable mention to the trippy Rust Eater Bisco), but with some caveats. I personally feel like the gyaru cosplay fangirl idea would work just as well without  the S&M eroge angle tacked on. I get that it can be used to make her obsession run counter to gender expectations, like Gojo’s being Hina dolls, but still feels like pandering to the ecchi crowd more than challenging gender boundaries. And the time & attention devoted to Marin’s jiggle physics each week can feel a bit too detailed. But it still manages enough cute romcom moments (like the end scene of ep 5) that I’m rooting for the two of them.

The standouts of the season remain Attack on Titan & Demon Slayer. AoT in particular seems to be living up to expectations for the final culmination of one of the decades most influential series, though it is certainly not an easy watch emotionally (again, to be expected given how dark & graphically violent it  had been previously).

On an anime-adjacent note, I’ve watched through episode 5 of Arcane over the weekend & am finding it more enjoyable than the typical Netflix (western) attempt at adult animation.

Finished "Faraway Paladin" tonight.  (Still not quite sure about how to translate the title.)  Pretty good overall.  They clearly left it open enough for another season or two, but without resorting to an annoying cliffhanger situation.  Appreciated.  I would not mind seeing it continued.

A 2nd season has been greenlit, but no word on timing..

Just finished The Orbital Children (Extra-terrestrial Boys & Girls). It was decent, but perhaps overly ambitious in what it tried to accomplish in just 6 episodes)

I go all the way back.  Teletype-ASCII BBSs in the pre-ANSI, 300baud dialup modem days.  Then there came the newfangled Fidonet BBSs.  uucp on the unix boxen.  Text-only Dragon's Gate RPG on GEnie at a blazing 2400b (and $6/hr) in the late 80s was my first realtime MMO.  Then telneting into MUDs & MOOs & MUCKs over the pre-WWW Internet.  I even ran my own DIKU-based CircleMUD for a couple years after the 'Net shut GEnie down and Dragon's Gate moved to AOL.

Believe it or not I still log in to IRC occasionally even now.  😮  I do have discord on my phone however.  :)

As an aside, I believe my early experiences with text-based MUDs, MOOs, and MUCKs was good practice for anime and enabled / reinforced a strong preference for subtitles over dubs.  Keeping up with anime subtitles is nothing compared to keeping up with online multiplayer text-based melees at 9600baud.  🤣

It just goes to show, not much difference in our ages, but a world of difference in our level of tech experience/knowledge 😂 😓

Three series that I used to like watching "back in the day" were Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Dirty Pair.
Looking at them now I don't think they've aged well and I wonder what I ever saw in them, but I guess tastes change over time.

Ranma 1/2 came to mind as a series that was popular particularly among the fanfic & cosplay community when I first started buying anime tapes in the 90s, but you really don’t hear about anymore. I don’t know how much of it is related to not aging well, but truth be told it’s humor got repetitive long before it’s run ended and there was little story or character development beyond the first couple seasons.
I feel like Urusei Yatsura owed a lot of it’s popularity to it being representative of western otaku culture with a lot of the humor based on japanese wordplay & folklore (it was also one of the earliest examples of the harem genre). Ironically, it was announced last month that an updated version was in production. Personally I think nostalgia is the biggest thing it has going for it, so not really expecting it to be popular in the west outside diehard fans.
It also seems like mist of the parody/otaku culture works that were well known back in the day (Otaku no Video & Project A-ko for example) have been largely forgotten/ignored by the newer generations.

Bubblegum Crisis was pretty popular back in the day with the original OVA series, a sequel OVA series (Bubblegum Crash) some concert/AMV releases & the AD Police spin off. It got an update in the late 90’s but hasn’t really been heard from since.

As far as manga, I remember Fuhigi Yuugi & Gunsmith Cats being popular, but again don’t really hear about them anymore.

But it may be premature to declare some series “forgotten” as a number of obscure older ones have gotten remakes or sequels in recent years (Shaman King, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen & just recently announced: Bastard!!)

Hope you all stay safe and warm.

I've got food and blankets, candles and such just in case. Last year some of my camping equipment helped me get through a scattering of power outages. I pretty much slept through the whole thing. 😆

Not the first time I’ve said it & won’t be the last: animals who hibernate are superior species 😴

I’m in the southwestern part of the state, so predicting less snow but more ice. It’s not supposed to be overly cold though … until the weekend

  6. Glad you found your way here, hopefully you’ll find things that interest you.

You mentioned Clannad & Your Lie in April in other posts. I’m not much for tear-jerkers, but really enjoyed the recent Fruits Basket remake (2019 - 2021) which was very emotional for me. Looking forward to the upcoming prequel/recap/epilogue movie.
