  1. So, I've been on a massive anime film binge. I just ordered the last moves I need to fully collect every Pokemon movie, which I will happily be watching when the last few come in on May 9th, I own every studio Ghibli film, every film by Mamorou Hosada, and I'm not sure which director or studio I should start looking for now, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know there are a couple of popular films I don't own, but I'll take anything you think is worth looking into, so please throw some suggestions my way.

I feel like people who engage in gatekeeping of any sort are insecure in some way and feel threatened by invalidation occurring when larger volumes of people identify in the way they do. I guess the suggestion here is that if you like "mainstream" or popular things then you're not putting in the work to dig through titles and find the lesser known gems. There are so many different ways to gatekeep, but I think that's the core of it, really. And the more something gains in popularity, the more of it you see, because inevitably you will find individuals who aren't content being categorised with the larger picture of said fandom as it grows and evolves.

If you ask me, I think most cases of gatekeeping can simply be ignored. It's not productive in any way, and at the end of the day who cares? It's just anime. Or music. Or games. Or whatever. If you happen to like One Piece or MHA and consider yourself an anime fan, then who are you hurting except someone on Twitter with backwards priorities and unaddressed insecurities?

That all said, I have seen more nasty gatekeeping toward social issues I consider to be more harmful than gatekeeping a fandom. Bi erasure, breastmilk purists, certain mental health communities, to name some. These can often put toxic and even misleading ideas in someone's head if they're particularly vulnerable.

    Btw:

    1000% agreed.

As a bi person, I fully feel that. Took me 10 years to come out after I was sure because it got so bad sometimes, and just online but in real life. As for everything else you said, I couldn't agree more. Gatekeeping is never anything but harmful, and some times in some very serious ways.

  3. If you've been on twitter today, (2/15/2021 for those that find this thread after today) you might have seen gatekeeping trending because a guy who is known for his gatekeeping tweets, and keeping company that also gatekeeps got so much attention, that even Funimation put out a tweet about it. While the guy in question was pretty much just being ratio'd, which is normal for his tweets, though never to this extent, I thought now would be a good a time as any to talk about it on here. It's never really come up that I've seen, and while I rarely post here, I do read the forums, and have never seen anyone that was taken seriously, try to gatekeep any particular show or anime in general, as it wouldn't make much sense to do that on an anime forum. I wanted to know what people's general thoughts were on gatekeeping, and if you've experienced any kind of gatekeeping, espeically based on gender in the past.

I know for myself, I tend to have people do that when I say I'm a little tired of subbed anime since so many lines are stereotypes in anime, and because VA work in Japan often has similar voices, hearing those same lines said the same way, by the same sounding voice in the hundreds of anime I've watched over the years, has caused me to feel like all those elements combined cause a character to lose a sense of identity. I could go into it further in a separate thread if anyone wants to see that, but for now, I present a topic that could make for an interesting conversation. Here's the tweet in question, if anyone wants to see it.

  4. I wrote a list about anime video games that just didn't quite end up in the right genre, or took elements of other genre's just a little too heavily. If this isn't the right place for it, please, feel free to move it, but unless or until that happens. I hope anyone who runs into this, will enjoy:

@RepentantSky True but unfortunately you do have to give Disney some credit to a point. Without Disney a lot of American families at least wouldn't of even batted an eye at Studio Ghibli films (unless the parents were already into anime themselves but let's face it a majority weren't). Without Disney slapping their label on the movie Studio Ghibli wouldn't be as popular and would probably get the same stereotypes as the other anime back then.

Heck, how I even first discovered Studio Ghibli was because my own mother bought Kiki's Delivery Service simply because it was a Disney movie. Same with Spirited Away. Families back then figured anything Disney was wholesome family entertainment unlike now after Disney pretty much bought everything, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I'm obsessed with Studio Ghibli films and the artist's artwork is beautiful, the characters exceptional, etc. But again, I don't think most of us would of grown up with Studio Ghibli if it weren't for Disney, lol.

That's probably true for a lot of people, but it's not something I ever thought about. Kiki was my first Ghibli film, but I just happened to catch it airing on TV, and didn't know it had anything to with Ghibli or Disney until years later.

Personally i only grew up watching Castle In The Sky, Spirted Away, and Monoke. What other Studio Ghibli movie would you recommend to take a look at?

All of them. You've seen three of their best, but their filmography is filled with other great, fantastic films that only they seem capable of creating. Here's a list of their films, take a look at them when you feel you want to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Studio_Ghibli_works

I recently bought Your Name. Keep forgetting to watch it (oops).

Yeah there are a lot of non-Studio Ghibli anime films I recommend checking out as well...

    Wolf Children

    A Silent Voice

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

These are just a few to name. Also quite a few can be watched on Netflix and/or HBO Max now.

That's one thing I will say about a lot of anime films now, as opposed to bac kin the day. For the longest time, in terms of pure quality and effort, no could touch Studio Ghibli, despite some great films coming out during their hay day, nothing really hit on that level. While these days, you won't often see films of the same style and nature, you can find films of a very different atmosphere that of the same quality. Films like "The Place Promised In Our Early Days" or "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" "In This Corner of the World" "Colorful"

This honestly looks like Avatar meets Princess Mononoke to me. I really like it. I'm gonna have to check it out.

For me Last air bender along with Legend of Korra definitely take the cake. Though with tthat said Ben 10 disclosing Omiverse of course is close second.

I haven't watched a lot of Ben 10 to be honest outside of some clips here or there. I ought to give it a shot soon.

  8. I was just watching Code Lyoko and Legend of Korra yesterday, and I thought it would be interesting to talk about shows that are anime inspired. Obviously, Avatar, is a North American product with heavy anime influence, and for those that may not have heard of it, Code Lyoko is a French made TV show that had 4 original seasons, and years later came back with a 5th season that ended on a cliffhanger after it's creators filed for bankruptcy.

I really like Avatar and Lyoko, but I also want to talk about any other anime inspired shows, so you know, feel free to suggest some and otherwise talk about what anime-like shows you've enjoyed over the years.

Yes, I totally agree. Talking about fillers in Bleach and then comparing it to Naruto isn't really even a conversation, lol. But yes I agree this show is very encouraging when, like you said, Ichigo uses power he didn't know he had from inside himself to defeat more powerful opponents (i'm a little farther in now) just to save other lives of people he doesn't know or defend his own.  His love for wanting others to change and be the best of themselves, and protecting his ''society'' from the evil hollows is incredible! On top of that even when he knows the Hollows are now evil and can't turn back into their regular state of their soul but because he knows they were once a person he still shows a bit of compassion while slaying them, lol. Great recommendation and as i'm getting farther into the show i'm liking it more and more. The power and sheer willpower he has is beautiful. Also, peep the pfp.....

I didn't mean to make it seem like I was saying there was a conversation of the two series regarding their fillers, so much as it was that Bleach literally got canned because of them, but for Naruto, all we really get is "just skip the fillers" like it's not a big thing. Even if they weren't compared directly, to me, it always felt like a double standard. Bleach has interesting fillers that tell interesting stories, Naruto repeats the same arc for literal years in a row, one gets canceled, one is still going without any real interruption.

  10. Keep watching it then, because outside of a few nothing episodes, I honestly think it's the best of the big three by miles. It doesn't drag on with it's main plot nearly as much as One Piece does, and despite people complaining about fillers, the amount of fillers in Naruto is literally twice the amount of episodes of Bleach in total, plus 1. It's always been so weird to me that people complain about both shows having fillers, but Bleach's which were generally more interesting and well written, somehow got the show canned, but Naruto's were basically DBZ all over again. Go on a mission with some of the Naruto cast that wasn't on the last one, get to know more about them, Rasengan, next repetitive filler arc. Bleach's arcs for the most part told interesting stories, and were about how Ichigo could overcome stronger opponents when his Bankai wasn't enough by either relying on a power he had that I won't go into because I don't want to spoil anything, that made him interesting, or by outsmarting them, getting in that one good hit that turned the tide of the battle. Bleach is fantastic.

  11. I really haven't been good about watching media in general lately, but I anime is something I want to give another hard look. I've missed several anime that are getting a new season soon, including some that I've seen have some serious hype around them, so based on what we know is coming in 2021, what anime would you suggest to someone who's open to try pretty much anything, and where would you suggest I go watch it?

Did you buy all that separately or was it part of a set?  The Mishy is a nice touch.  :)

Separate. I bought it over the last 4 years or so. They are all special editions of each game, most of which I got on release.

  13. Honestly, it's probably anything from The Legend of Heroes right now. The 4th and final game in the Trails of Cold Steel Arc is out in 12 days, and I honestly can hardly think about anything else as far as playing games goes. I might even try to beat Trails in the Sky 1-3 again while I wait for it because nothing else is coming to mind when I want to play games.

  14. I wonder, what's everyone's favorite anime, or even anime style games? I've been playing Genshin Impact, The Legend of Heroes and Sword Art Online games almost exclusively for the last month, and I just wanted to know what what kind of games do all play when you have that anime itch? For that matter, why not take some photo's of your favorite anime games, I love seeing people's collections or even just their favorites. Let's talk some anime style games for once. Don't see a lot of that around here.

  15. I wouldn't buy Hogwarts Legacy unless the terf known at J.K. Rowling had a gun to my head, and then I'd return it as soon as she's not around anymore. That said, I might get it used so she doesn't get any of my money.

As for anything else, I'd say FFXVI, Spider-Man: Miles Morales,, Scarlet Nexus, Cris Tales, which I'm counting because it comes out after the next gen consoles do, Astro's Playroom, Demon's Souls, Immortals: Feynx Rising, God of War Ragnarok, The Medium and Resident Evil: Village/8. Also, not technically next gen, but Monster Hunter Stories 2 is pretty high up there.

  16. This is my Collection. Honestly, I'm surprised I haven't seen a lot of talk about these films. Since I've started watching them again for the first time in a few years, I wanted to talked about this wonderful studio's, amazing films. I've seen all of them at least twice, most of them at least 6 times, and some of them, over two dozen. I've watched all the special features on the films shown in the picture, and honestly, I feel personally, that no matter how great other films are in the anime industry, even ones inspired by the works of the many talented employees of Studio Ghibli, that nothing will ever quite reach the level of these films. Long story short, I'm a massive fan, and I wanted to see what some of your favorite films are from them. If you want suggestions for any film you haven't seen, or you just want to talk about your favorite films from the studio, let's chat.

Still need to find more. I've actually got a ton of collector's editions and game merch. I'd like to find a place to display before posting. Also need to find my Dreamcast, N64, SNES, PSP, some Xbox and Atari games. I'll try to screen my PS3 and 4 library for some digital purchases. ✌️😃

Do you have all the PS2 Dot hack games? I was only able to recently finish that collection off. Either way, you got some good stuff just in these pictures. It's a stark reminder for me to that I need to start collection same Gamecube games as well. I think I only have Mario Strikers left right now so that collection needs some real rebuilding.

  18. I just beat A Short Hike, one of the indie games mentioned in today's Indie World show, and I absolutely love it. I bought 4 of those indies that dropped today, and I'm gonna start playing more of them after I let my Switch charge and cool down a bit.

I disagree that voice acting sounds the same in japanese. I can somewhat attribute you saying that because usually the same VAs get cast for a few anime at a time. I think most Jap VAs put more effort into their acting and a lot more expressive than English VAs. Like in FMA whenever they have to do a yell or a roar in english it just sounds so lame, but in japanese you can feel the energy the VA put into that particular take. I find that anime is rather always trying to be the counterculture, always breaking the mold and not trying to be cemented in anything that could be called tradition. The great majority of the anime industry is somewhat shamed by japanese main stream, and its only a few sectors of japan that have embraced anime as a regular entertainment medium. People forget that japan IRL is not like japan in anime, and that usually being into anime beyond a certain age is considered no bueno. Things have been better in this last decade, but its not like there is a cadre of anime perfectionists that are like ANIME MUST BE MADE THIS WAY TRUE NIHON STYLE. Also for me a lot of anime can potentially be lost in translation. Some word puns that have to do with the way things are pronounced are completely lost and often have to be replaced with english puns that make little to no sense and take away from the cleverness or dorkiness of the character or situation that was mean originally. For me the biggest time a dub messed up is when in scenes where everyone is supposed to be quiet in the early dubs of DBZ, they filled it with random conversations, or made characters say things that were more wholesome to make the good guys not seem bloodthirsty.

I have yet to find one single dub that really captures all the things Jap VAs put into their characters. I do not think it is impossible for it to happen, but i have yet to see it.

For comparison here is the FMA brotherhood in Jap

    Here it is in english

A lot of the impact of the scene is lost, because the VAs dont showcase the same level of emotion.

I don't think you read everything that I said, or misunderstood it. I said that VA work from Gigantor, the first ever anime, sounds exactly like voice acting of today. Gigantor I believe is from 1963, if not the late 1950's. Most, if not all of the actors from that show are either dead or retired, but actors of today still sound the same as they did. Also, if you want to talk about screams with emotions, I dare you to find someone who can out scream better than this:

Also, if you're only defense of my criticism has to do with screams, that's not really good enough. Even if you think the screams are better, that's only one small aspect of the entire show of FMA, and that's only one example. There are literally thousands of others. What I'm trying to say, is that your argument is pretty weak.

  20. Yep, I just said it. Dubbed anime can be better than subbed anime, and the basic reason for this, is that Japanese voice acting, has literally never changed. If you find an episode of Gigantor, the anime that is recognized as the anime ever created, in Japanese, and compare it to anime that was released just this week, you'll find that the voices sound exactly the same, and that the way the act is almost completely unchanged. Meanwhile dubbed anime in just about every language it can be dubbed, accept maybe in languages where they take longer to say what needs to be said, and can barely get through it in the allotted time as a result, has changed. Watching Gigantor for example in English, it sounds just like any acting of the time, which arguably isn't very good acting as is.

English voice acting in anime took a serious dive once the 80's rolled around, almost as if the clear distinction of anime versus cartoons, made it less important as a genre. But, once the Ocean dub of DBZ came and went, and the actors we know and love even today who played the rolls of characters like Goku and Vegeta came to be what made them famous, and other actors like Steve Blum and Yuri Lowenthal came around, who have a main voice they use, but can vary in it, or who have just the one voice, but such a variety of emotions they can convey with it, acting in anime, improved, and it's continued to do so.

In Japan, some voice actors have gotten through the cracks, so far as to play main characters in fact, such as Natsu's VA in Fairy Tail, or Maka in Soul Eater, and it works well for them, but for the most part, they have remained unchanged. While I'm not in any regard saying that it's problematic to like hearing the same lines, voiced the same way, and with the same voices over and over again, I don't want to knock anybody's preferences, I do think if the argument of subs versus dubs is going to continue, this is worth while angle to look at it from. Sure, if you only look at the most popular anime, the voice acting even in English can be exactly the same actors, but since there are so many anime that don't become the most popular ever, the variation can be found in voice acting. It cannot however, be found in Japanese, because no matter how big or small the anime is, voice acting always sounds the same, Japan has a history of prioritizing tradition over all else, and it does have an effect on anime.

Those are my thoughts on anime voice acting subs versus dubs anyways. What do you all think, and what are some examples you can think of where what I laid out here can backfire? FMA is a good example of multiple things I said not being constantly true. For example, Ed and Al have unique voices in Japanese, but those voices aren't very good, meanwhile in English, their voices were also unique for their time, both times an FMA show was dubbed, making it arguably superior in English, twice. And of course, there are some anime where it really doesn't make much difference at all, such as My Hero Academia, because the voice acting quality is pretty much equal on both sides. I wanna know what the general consensus is here on this topic.
