  1. So lately I keep seeing the terms otaku & weeb/weaboo used interchangeably. Maybe no longer the case but the distinction I learned was “otaku” when used to refer to a westerner is someone who’s a fan of japanese pop culture (anime/manga/video games etc). A “weeb/weaboo” was a westerner who’s convinced japanese culture/heritage is superior to their own and tries to imitate japanese mannerisms & philosophy, but usually wind up coming across as a false stereotype (wannabe/poser). So while I accept the label otaku, “weeb” makes me cringe. Of course from a purely japanese semantic, otaku can be used to refer to someone with an unhealthy obsession about anything, usually to the point where it has a negative effect on other aspects of their life.

Anyway, not trying to call anyone out, just something of a pet peeve of mine.

The distinction has more than likely become faded over time as anime has grown into more of a mainstream interest rather than a niche hobby with an accompanying colloquial image. Add to that what I like to call "Gen Z irony culture" and you've got the once negative term of 'weeb/weaboo' now flipped on its head into a more approachable and perhaps even affectionate label almost indistinguishable from otaku to the uninitiated. The observable difference you see remaining is that one who considers themselves 'otaku' is more likely an experienced and serious/involved fan whereas calling oneself a 'weeb' is perhaps simply an indication they enjoy watching a couple of anime titles or games.

I get you though. It feels a bit invalidating when labels get thrown around carelessly and lines get blurred. I see that in a lot of other areas I concern myself with outside of anime. Dang normies. :P

By certain way, do you mean when you have to peel off skins or trim the ends or wash them? I mean, once you do that you can pretty much chop them as wonky as you like. 😄 And with an oven you can do roasted veggies or baked chicken and those things are super low maintenance. Really all it takes is practice, and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it if you try. Cooking is a great life skill to have and doesn't need to be a big affair. Even if you can focus on and get comfortable with a small handful of foods you like, then you'll be pretty much set.

I believe you can do it! Never be afraid to try.

Oh dear lol not even a kraft dinner?

Anyway, don't despair, cooking doesn't need to be a whole thing to fuss over, especially if you're just feeding yourself. Do you have a slow cooker? They're the actual best. You can literally throw in a raw hunk of meat with a little water and oil, salt and pepper, maybe some chopped veggies if you like, then set and forget. It's un-fuckup-able and takes like 3 minutes. And boom you have chicken dinner after waiting a couple hours. Or a nice tender (insert food here).

  8. Cleaning up some of the leftover debris from last week's plumbing repairs and chopped out a ~3 foot section of pipe around the leaking section just to see how bad looked.  I could barely see down the length of the pipe due to all the mineral/rust build up!  Surprised that a) there was any flow at all through the ~25 foot stretch that I wound up replacing and b) it hadn't started leaking before this.  Well, at least I shouldn't have to worry about this particular stretch for another couple decades.

  11. I dooded the deed.  Kind of pointless since I know either Biden or Trump will win but if I don't vote then I can't complain, right?  Pitiful selection this time, as usual.  I almost wrote-in the name of the guy with a boot on his head but since he didn't get the nomination I instead went for the guy whose running mate was initially the running mate of the guy with the boot on his head.  I'd have voted Green again but I wrote to them last time about their stupid anti-nuclear stance and got back a nonsense reply so I went back to the other guys for this cycle.

All I can say is I hope SpaceX's Starship testing goes well.  I need a few AU of hard vacuum and lethal radiation between me and D.C. ASAP.

  13. Dont mean to rant, but like if you can't be genuine with someone then why the fuck are lying acting like you're this perfect fucking saint that loves to make friends?

    Like wtf.

Hmm. I find people who like to surround themselves with as big a circle as they possibly can are uncomfortable with the idea of any one person disliking them. Spreading yourself so thin almost forms this persona you can hide behind and pretend to be exactly the type of person whoever you're trying to draw in can connect with. The fault comes when even that persona crumbles and you can begin to see the fragile human behind it. I personally find it to be much healthier to simply surround yourself with people you are comfortable being yourself around. Let friendships happen naturally and let go of the ones that don't work out or are harmful to you. If you meet someone who boasts a 'love making new friends' sort of vibe, it may be better to just keep your distance if possible and observe.

I hope you're doing well otherwise. Take care!

  14. And now I’m 56.

I’ve actually had this affliction since the 10th but I didn’t realize it until my phone reminded me about my brother’s birthday yesterday.  (Then there’s my mom’s on the 23.  Yes, somehow my family wound up with 3 of us in one month.)

Some people just have the emotional maturity of a sea cucumber. If online video games are their only outlet, then all their negativity gets dumped on to other players rather than on an NPC or something that won't be hurt by it. These are people who need to find an additional safe outlet to quell their frustrations.

Closest approach was 2,900km and we didn't even see it until 6 hours after it went by.  😮  Probably 3-6m in diameter (about 1/3rd the size of the Chelyabinsk meteor)  and travelling at 12.4km/second.  Definitely would have made some noise and got people's attention.

😬 Very close indeed. Good thing it's small and would have been less likely to cause more damage, even though Chelyabinsk... well, exploded for lack of a better term. Is the size of it a factor in it going undetected?

My idea was to do something similar online, but I just never had the time to do the research for something like that.  I'd have had to quit my day job and I could not figure out a way to make something like a blog bring in enough income to replace the paycheck.

      Retirement goals!!

But seriously you're totally right; Occam's razor seems to apply here. I see a lot of it lately. Heavy-handed astro-science is, I'm guessing, a frequent victim of over-sensationalist just because the hype of aliens.

Not enough cryptid focus on the oceans, by contrast. There was a statistic I came across claiming we've explored more of our solar system and beyond than we have of our own oceans. For all we know, Lovecraft was right, and another intelligent species might be existing down there without us even knowing.

Honestly when I find something curious relating to space, I have recently been thinking "What does efaardvark think of this?" Blame it on not knowing anybody else with inclination on the subject. But anyway, I appreciate the comment on it. It actually gave me a lot to think about (the length did not intimidate me, was more than happy to read it!)

      Quote

getting back to that "non-gravitational accelleration"? Turns out that was just the media going nuts. There was some acceleration observed, but it was consistent with a push from solar radiation pressure.

I suspected that was hyperbole, but this is the first time I've seen a counter-arguement that actually made any sense. Everyone seems to be out there trying to prove it's an alien ship. 🤡

The idea it may possibly be a chunk of a planet is less exciting than aliens, of course, but it's also somewhat comforting? I also think if there were any evidence that it were intelligent in any way, it would probably be tightly under wraps and most of us wouldn't even have heard about it to begin with. 🤷‍♀️

As always, thank you for humouring me! I hope my curiosity isn't too bothersome lol
