  1. A couple other recommendations building off of Ohayotaku list would be;

Psycho Pass - Police Procedural, Action and Dystopian
Code Geass - Mecha (Real Robot), Military and a little bit of Slice of Life (and Pizza)
Ergo Proxy - Phycological, Supernatural, Apocalyptic and Atmospheric
Hunter x Hunter - Action, Adventure, Comedy
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Poltical, Space Opera and Military Sci-fi
Toradora - Slice of life, comedy and romantic drama (not a personal favourite but a lot of people on the forum like it)
Kill la Kill - Magical Girl, Action and Comedy
Gurren Lagann - Mecha (Super Robot), Comedy and Action
    Overlord - Action, Iseaki, Ecchi

  2. Blue Gender, Wolfs Rain and Witch Hunter Robin are all pretty obscure Anime from the 00s. I've mentioned them before. Another one is Guyver, which has come up on this forum a few times, which is also quick cult when compared to other shows of its era. Shows like Psycho-Pass which I'd consider a modern classic on the same level as Steins Gate or Madoka Magica has also been mostly forgotten. The show only came out in the early 2010s and yet how many people discuss the show these days. Maybe if due to Amazon not committing to dubbing the newer series. I mean how many people on here even realise my PFP is from the show.

Another show is Escaflowne, I've only seen the first two or three episodes of that show, but that another show that been mostly lost to its time. Maybe the noses were too pointy.

Finally Welcome to the NHK, this was a slice of life, comedy, character focus show from the 2000s which isn't talked about much nowadays. Those are all I can think about right now, there are likely a few more.

  3. If you've only seen the first Fate Stay Night from 2004, check out the other routes adaptations by Ufotable - Unlimited Blade Works series and Heavens Feel Trilogy. Or visa versa if you've not checked out Studio Dean's Fate Stay Night yet check it out. Then as Ohayotaku said, if you've not seen it yet, check out Fate/Zero. If you enjoy that or you've already seen it check out some of Gen Urobuchi's other work from that time period - Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho Pass - those two series also got two films that act of sequels which screenplays were also by Gen so if you like those series and want more then you could watch those too.

  4. A lot of people really like Re;Zero and when I watched it I thought it was okay. I'd not watched much Anime at that point, just dipped my toes in Fate and maybe Ergo Proxy so I was very new. I went to watch the second series and I gave up on episode three, I chalked it up to Re;Zero having left so little impact on me that I didn't really care about the story. Then again I find Iseaki for the most part pretty unwatchable, I tried Shield Hero and I gave up on the third episode.

Then there's Gundam. And this is not at jab at the overall franchise - some series I've enjoyed such as War in the Pocket, Origin. But the original series was really underwhelming. So overall I like Gundam when it more mature but am uninterested when it goes for a more 'clone wars' style demographic.

  5. New as in new stuff releasing or new as in new for you? For the former, I'm not much help as I'm not caught up on new releases in Anime. For the latter I can give a few action suggestions but it depends on what you've already seen. So for Shonen action if you've not given Hunter x Hunter a shot, defiantly do, I'm currently about half way through Greed Island arc and its awesome. Highly recommend. There's also FMA: Brotherhood, that another Shonen I've watched and really enjoyed. Then there's Fate. Not sure if Fate even is Shonen, some of the series such as Apocrypha and Grand Order feel very light hearted, Shonen-like but then you got series like Fate/Zero which are closer to Seinen. But if you're looking for some really good fights that is clearly a series to check out.

Then there's Code Geass, mecha-Shonen, lots of action as well and a nice easy fifty episode split into two seasons so again a easy one to sit down and watch not as complicated as Fate and all its different timelines and shows. Finally Parasyte the Maxim, this one is certainly an Action-Seinen but it probably one of the best action shows out there so defiantly worth a try.

If you've seen all those, I'm sure others can recommend you some more stuff.

I've just finished Madoka Magica and the movie.

    The TV series is excellent.

The Rebellion move rather less so. I think they vastly overdid the surreal graphics (have they not heard the saying "less is more"?). I think it would have been a far better movie if they'd concentrated more on clearly telling the story rather than all the weird graphics. But I guess that's what happens when you let a production team go for maximum visual impact rather than story development. The term "style over substance" comes to mind.

I don't really see the point of the movie, unless it's extract a bit more cash from the franchise, because the TV series has quite a conclusive finale.

I think the film is a character story focused on Homura and her development exiting the true nature of her wish and why she made it. At least the second half.

First half is more fan service. Through I do think being able to tell us about the characters personality without saying directly 'this is the angry one' was pretty smart. Using the animation and art to tell the story visually.

The ending was originally planned to be more conclusive and less 'sequel baiting' however as it taken several years for them to tease a sequel I would really say the series has been milked overly that much.

It probably says a lot about me that I forgot about Evangelion technically being a "psychological" anime 🙃

I only ever saw the original run of the show and "End of Evangelion", but when it comes to the other movies and the actual ending I've never gotten around to it :/

Great show of course, but the original "ending" really frustrated me so I'm uncertain about giving it a 2nd chance

When I first watched Eva, my brother showed me 1 through to 24. Then he switched to showing me the film over the next two episodes. And once I watched the film a few weeks later he showed me the last two episodes of the original series.

I think it had somthing to do with End of Evangelion first half happens canonically before either it second half and the original ending with the original ending being the 'good' ending and the movies ending being the 'neutral' or 'bad' ending.

Makes it sound like a visual novel.

The commercialism side of things is really a bummer though, you're right on about that. Is there a game series that comes to mind to you as something that really got ruined by the modern landscape of things?

Well I guess if I had to pick one series that stands out to me I feel Halo. The original trilogy to the newest game Infinite really shows how what producers and developers alongside casual consumers value in there product which is shallow, low effort online life service games which is lacking features and core content games with the most functioning part of the game being the in game store.

Also to clarify, I had enjoyed the anime I had seen prior to Apocrypha. I was interested in continuing those shows but there was no driving force pushing me to delve further in anime. Nothing pushing me to hunt down the next show.

Why it was Fate? Not sure, I'd guess because I watched Apocrypha I was inspired to watch Zero. After watching Zero I wanted somthing like Zero but not another Fate show as watching two Date shows back to back even I wanted somthing different.

    Yet still anime.

So I choose Steins Gate. And that was also awesome. And it pinwheels from there.

For the first few months I watched some really good shows (Ergo Proxy, Psycho Pass, Monster) as well and I think that period shaped my taste for both action and phycological anime.

It was also interesting, and proberbly worth a mention but I remember when choosing to watch Psycho Pass it was down to it sharing the same writer as Fate Zero, Gen Urobuchi, and I think that's definitely an important milestone as like Games and Film before it where I eventually grew to try and learn about the people behind what I enjoyed and sought out there other works I was now doing the same with anime.

I mean by my second year as a anime weeb I sat down and watched a Magical Girl show just cause I found out Gen was involved in its production.

I've seen Code Geass, Death Note and Toradora. Of those three I really enjoyed Code Geass and Death Note, with I think Death Note slightly edging out over Code Geass, but both really enjoyable shows. Toradora, I'm not massively in love with, not to say its bad, however I'm just not a slice of life guy. The other shows I've not seen yet, and most of them I don't know. However I am pretty sure middle left is Sword Art Online. Might have heard of Re Life.

If I'm correct is that the show where the MC becomes a teenagers again after taking part in some clinical drug test? I might be wrong on some of the details.

  10. Well I guess I'm reasonable new to anime, I've only been watching anime seriously for about 2 years, before that I'd watched four shows (from the best of my recollection), the first was Yamato remake this was around 2015 as I know I'd just seen the Force Awakens with my Brother when it released and we both left feeling pretty deflated from how generic and unoriginal it had been. He'd later stumbled on Yamato 2199 and watched the series and suggested I'd like it. We watched the show, and I enjoyed Yamato, however I did remember thinking there was a little too much fanservice at times. So skip a few months later and my brother was telling me about a show he'd seen clips off online called Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I decided to check it out and after four episodes found myself really enjoying the show and so me and my brother sat through and watched LOTGHs the new thesis.

But it was a few months after that when my brother suggested we watch a show he binged in one night called Goblin Slayer. We watched the show, I enjoyed it and that was it for about two years. I ended up re-watching those three shows maybe another time, as we caught rumour that a new series for both the Yamato and LOTGH series was scheduled to air soon.

Eventually my brother suggested we watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. So we watched the show, then the movie End of Evangelion.

At this point anime went on the back burner as at the time I was in the middle of college and I was also doing some play throughs of some PC games like Fallout, KOTOR and I think Halo MCC had just released on PC.

Eventually however I came back to anime, and this time for a pink haired anime girl I'd seen all over the internet...

For some reason, Apocrypha had gripped me like no other anime series before. I wasn't even mad when Astolfo turned out to be a guy. Now I just wanted more anime. So I watched Fate/Zero, Steins Gate and then Ergo Proxy, Fate Unlimited Blade Works and then watched Psycho Pass, Wolfs Rain, the first two Heaven Feel movies, Parasyte the Maxim, Monster and so, so many more. At this point now I've watched 90 + shows, and most of those were in the last two years. I guess the way I got into Anime is pretty unusual (it was a real crawl and then a sudden sprint) and Fate is certainly the series that defines me most as an Anime fan.

As for why I love Anime, I just think the stories in the shows and the characters are compelling. Plus the characters often look really good (I mean Fate packed with stellar character designs) and the action and animation flow in most the shows I've sat down to watch are super enjoyable. Also as my former primary passion of Games and Films have become too casual and commercialised for me to personally enjoy much anymore, (for films I say I began losing interest in the late 2000s, and as for games the late 2010s) Anime and all the decades of content were an easy medium to fall into.

I do worry that one day I'd have watched all the good anime, as I've been working my way back through the years and sooner or later I'll run out, as I've yet to find a seasonal anime I'd really want to sit down and watch with only a few ongoing series that interest me, such as Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Madoka Magica and the Fate franchise. Also I do hold out hope that the Hunter X Hunter anime may return as I'm currently about to embark on the Greed Island arc and well at that point I only have the Chimera Ant arc and the Election arc to watch. I know there's the Dark Continent arc and the Succession arc so I hold unreasonable hope that it may one day be adapted up to the newest arc.

    A man can dream.

Is it the industry or just that the golden years of Mecha is long since past with only a few films and series coming close to capturing the magic of the older series like Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Code Geass.

Another good series would be Blue Gender, that another Mecha show but has a more Star Ship Trooper vibe compared to Mobile Suit or Code Geass. Beyond that there is Studio Triggers 'Darling in the Franxx', I know you like Gurren Lagann so that might be worth a watch.

I will continue to sing the praises of a certain mecha anime series. Rahxephon!

Also just saw the Trailer for Rahxephon, that's now on my list because it did remind me of Eva a-lot and looked real good plus Studio Bones so what could go wrong - I mean Wolfs Rain and Fullmetal Alchemist were great so I can't see this being bad.

  12. Just finished the Yorknew City Arc of Hunter X Hunter. I now I'm in an interesting position as I know that the Phantom Rouge movie follows this arc - I think - or I can move directly onto Greed Island Arc. I think I want to at least give the movie a shot, plus additional Hunter x Hunter content can't be bad.

Can you suggest animes like magnetic rose and LOGH?

Space Battleship Yamato and Mobile Suit Gundam are two military space opera anime series I can think off. Gundam the more sizable brand, and more well known so if you haven't checked it out yet you'd probably enjoy it. One issue is Gundam is spread out over several generations of anime, as a result the quality (in my opinion) can differ greatly not just in terms of animation but also in terms of pacing and character writing.

no worries! I was a bit edgy so I loved watching Higurashi and I also loved Ouran High School host club! I also still have a deep love for Death Note is you haven't already seen those ones yet!

I've only seen Death Note recently, currently re-watching it with my Brother and a Friend.

  15. Welcome to the Forum, what were your favourite anime from the 2000s to 2010s period? For some reason to say I've only just got into anime, most the stuff I've watched hails from that generation. No idea as to why.

Me and my sister just started "Outlaw Star" on a whim last night and HOLY SHIT! Talk about a show with a sense of style! I can't believe I'd passed it up for so long, really feels like I'm gonna be watching all the way through this thing :D

I'm only 3 episodes in, what do ya'll think? Am I in for a good time?

My brother watched it and he thinks it really good, its been on my to watch list for a few months now. So if his taste is anything to go off on then I bet you're in for a good time.

Oh yeah, that episode confused the hell out of me at first. I thought when they got raided that they all got shot dead... then they were alive again next episode. Didn't realize they'd been using blanks/rubber bullets or whatever lol.

Neither did I, I was sure the entire place got wasted. And to be honest, I felt nothing. Like had that been the end of those characters it would have stirred no emotion in me.

  18. Two nights ago I watched and completed the Heaven Feel Trilogy. Spring Song, the one I'd been waiting to release in my region was amazing and the fights were on another level. So with that milestone out the way, I'm probably gonna try and finish up Samuari Champloo and get to the end of Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia, and also continue through Hunter x Hunter.

Once Samuari and Babylonia are complete I'll likely look into getting a hold of Camalot films, second one comes out in May but no doubt only in Australia and America. Luckily we brits share the same region code with aussies for blueray. At least that's may game-plan going forward with Anime.

Also anyone on here know when the Magia Record Second Season blueray might drop? I've got no idea.

WHR is ok, but it's weird that there's basically no plot until episode 15. Cool music though.

I made it to episode 15, and something did happen but the following episode it was back to more or less a slow paced episode and I was like I just don't care anymore. The music and the opening was good though.
