I don't drop series because I don't subscribe to any streaming services and buy all my anime on disk, which can be expensive, but then again I don't loose access to my favourite series when the streaming company decides to cull their catalogue.

Over the past year there have been a couple of series where a few episodes in I wonder why I purchased this rubbish, but I stick with it (I paid for it after all!) and usually by about halfway through I change my mind and think it's a reasonably decent series. I often find such series are much better second time round.

Of course there have been some, fortunately not many, that start bad, continue to be bad and are still bad at the end....
and yes, Kokoro Connect, I am looking at you!!

Yeah, I wish I hadn't bought Witch Hunter Robin... I mean considering it came out alongside some right classics I was sure it was going to be good. But I'm over half way and it still so boring. I honestly dropped it.

There are two different versions of Guyver. I recommend both of them. Each one has great things and can stand on its own merits. The new one takes the story a little farther into the manga then the original 12 part OVA.

Yeah I think the opening I saw was for the 2005 version, so the newer one. So I'm defiantly gonna give the show a watch at some point.

This is insane, but Guyver is also on my plan to watch list. From the opening I saw online it looks pretty dope.

I am new as of today. I could not post my topic to 4chan, as it appears there is some IP block against the IP range that my cellphone is on.

You could try and use a VPN, Proton is a free one you can download. Just link yourself to one of the free VPNs and you should be able to repost on 4chan.

    Also welcome to the forums.

  7. Currently I'm at episode 19 of Samuari Champloo, so gonna try and finish that one in the next week. Also, I've finally got my hands of Spring Song and after some delivery shenanigans I've also got Prestel Flower and Lost Butterfly blue rays (I only had the DVDS before). I plan on marathoning the entire trilogy come this Friday. The anticipation I am feeling for this set of films right now. I can hardly wait.

I've been meaning to watch Escaflowne and Beck for a while. But my to watch list is so packed right now.

  9. Well not sure what you have or haven't seen Anime wise. If your looking for a quality show such as Evangelion or Berserk (1997), you could try Monster. Super gripping series and adapted by Mad House back in 2004 (I think) from the Manga by Naoki Urasawa . Other than that could try something written by Gen Urobuchi as his stories tend to be darker and more 'realistic' similar to Berserk or Eva in that sense. The three shows written by him I would recommend are Madoka Magica (deconstruction of magical girls so not to dissimilar from Eva), Fate/Zero and Psycho Pass.

If you've already sat down and given those a shot, you could got for something more niche and less talked about like Wolfs Rain or Blue Gender. Both of those shows are from the 'Adult Swim' era of Anime, but are well worth going back to. There's also Ergo Proxy, I think this one is a little more talked about, but if you haven't seen it yet it has defiantly got some 'Eva' vibes in there.

Other than that there's always Hunter X Hunter or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. If you've not got round to those yet. Legend of the Galactic Heroes has two versions - the old 80s OVA series that's 110 episodes long or the new adaptation which is currently releasing the third season. As for HXH that getting another arc of some kind released down the road, but not to sure about that one. I do know its currently complete up to the Election Arc.

  10. Welcome to the forums, Science Fiction was how I also got into anime a few years back. I was already a huge science fiction nerd, starting with Doctor Who, Halo, Star Wars, Mass Effect, so when I first began my tentative steps into Anime was with Yamato and Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis. At that point I didn't really consider myself a huge Anime fan, after all I'd watched like two shows. A year or so after that I tried some other action shows such as Psycho Pass, Fate Zero and also some more Science Fiction such as Ergo Proxy and Steins; Gate.

What got you into anime, was it a slow gradual thing or have you been into it as long as you remember?

I haven't been able to finish all of it, stopping around episode 366, I gave up. I enjoyed the anime, but as I found other anime to be interested in, I grew out of One Piece. Honestly, I am hoping that one day I am able to finish up on the entire anime, my friends always tease me on how i'm so far behind.

Well I've not even started episode 1 yet... so if I were to try and watch One Piece I'd be way behind. I mean Hunter X Hunter to me seems a herculean effort - I've broken it down into its distinct arcs to give breathing room and allow me to watch other shows. But I just don't know if I'll ever have the patience to sit through 1000 episodes.

I've technically cheated by throwing a manga in there, but Berserk 1997 was my first anime and I'm hooked on the deluxe editions atm.

    3x3.thumb.jpg.ae128bce44ea4e9fdf8d67101827fac8.jpg

So I can see Steins; Gate top right, Berserk below that at middle right (1997 is awesome - the ending still sticks with me), Toradora at middle left. Fate Unlimited Blade Works at bottom left, I prefer Zero ever so slightly but I'm a sucker for all Fate related anime and finally at bottom right I can see Claymore. A series I have not yet finished, but I enjoyed what I watched. Otherwise the other shows on the 3x3 are a mystery to me, I mean I can read the middle image says 'Noein' but I've never seen it till now.

Also the one above that I've seen somewhere - but I can't place the name.

Right, that's why the standard market system is terrible for things like anime.  There's no point in spending money on an anime that you can watch for free on Crunchyroll.

With the standard market system, the point of spending money on anime is to own it.  Owning anime made sense back in the days before online streaming.

Yeah, I own anime because I like a series and want to re-watch it. I've watched Fate/Zero four times completely. Two times on my own. I don't buy into streaming services, were ultimately paying for access to what's on the platform. I'm not a big fan of the whole service style, as whilst it makes anime very accessible they can make changes, remove shows you're watching ect. I had a really bad experience with Sky of all things, when I was watching Breaking Bad. I watched season 1 through 2 and then they removed it from the catalogue. At the time I didn't have Netflix, (not even sure if it was on there back a few years now) so I ended up having to wait a long time to watch seasons 3 to 5.

Nowadays I mostly stick to physical releases for my anime/series that I like.

Plus the issue with Monster is that it currently is sort of in a legal hell for who owns the rights to even stream it. I think Hulu had it last, a few years back. But no ones got it right now so there's no way to watch it legally. There is the entire series uploaded to YouTube of all places, both sub and dub so that's cool.

    11 hours ago, Xerographica said:

What I'm essentially suggesting is crowdfunded advertising.  Kinda like everybody who truly loves Monster chipping in to put it on a big billboard.  But relatively few people can see a billboard, unlike an online list.  So here on this website, everybody who truly loves Monster would chip in to move it higher up on the list.

And on a personal note, it not really my place to decide what should and shouldn't be promoted in terms of anime. I like what I like, and others on here like similar stuff and different stuff. So I'd recommend someone to watch Monster because personally I really like it. However I don't think it would be imperative for someone to watch that show or any show and no matter how much I might spend to promote it that's not going to guarantee someone's going to go watch it. After all for one thing Monster is a mature show, it not a show for say some of the people on this site because it is more adult themes and imagery throughout plus because it is a show geared towards a older audience it also might go over a younger individuals head.

Again when they get older, that person might end up watching Monster and enjoy it then but in a younger mind set they might see it as long winded, talky and boring.

A final critique of the purposed system would be what happened if a really notoriously bad anime (like Cypher) suddenly got an influx of super wealthy supports. Or just an average anime if were being less dramatic and the more likely outcome anyway. The system would fall apart because at this point it not about objective quality in the show but instead how much someone is willing to pay out to see there favourite show at the top. Again this system doesn't weed out subjective opinions it simply places a pay wall between sharing you're opinion/review on a show.

Also currently I swear Gintama is doing really well on where it ranked on Mal. It at least in the top 10 on one list they've got up there. That's out of like all the anime on there database which is pretty extensive.

Well, while I'm at it... how much money have you spent on your most fav anime?  Does the amount you spent accurately reflect your true love for the anime?  Personally my most fav anime is Gintama.  I've spent $0 dollars on it.  I watched it on Crunchyroll for free.  No ads even since I use adblock.  This means that there's a huge disparity between...

    A. my love for Gintama
    B. the amount of money I've spent on it

Well I've spent the most money on... Fate. It was also the first anime I bought, Fate Zero which kickstarted my collection a year back. However my favourite anime is Monster but I mean tracking down a DVD of that show is next to impossible so 'how much one spends on an Anime' might not be indicative of how much they rate that anime.

Royal Space Force : Wings of Honneamise.

I first saw this film back in the mid 1990's when VHS ruled the home entertainment industry, and I thought it was a really good film. So when the DVD era dawned and I was replacing my old VHS tapes with DVDs it was one of the films I wanted to have in my DVD collection but the DVD release when it came out was one of those Special Editions and *seriously* expensive, so I didn't buy it.

Then last week I spotted it on Amazon at a 'bargain bin' price so I added it to my current order. Last night I settled down to watch it, for a film made in 1987 it is very much a product of its time and has the distinctive 80's anime style, this is not a bad thing of course and there are many 80's anime series that are still well worth watching, but to my mind Wings of Honneamise is not one of them and the 25 years since I last watched it have not been kind to it.

I can see why when it was first released it was regarded as a great film, but I don't think it has aged well and I found the storyline pacing a bit slow and even slightly boring in places. Part way through the film someone knocked on my door, now normally this would annoy me as I don't like being interrupted while watching anything, but I was quite willing to hit pause and answer the door and I suspect that had the call been about something that needed immediate action I would quite happily not gone back to the film.

I realise that there must be those who regard Wings of Honneamise as a great film and I'm sorry if I've upset or offended you, but in my opinion (for what it's worth) it was a great film that just hasn't stood the test of time.

Me and Marathon watched it about a year ago, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I think if my memory holds up the film is very slow at the start, but I enjoyed the story as it got going and ramped up. But it been a while since I've last seen it and now that I've watched more anime it might not hold up as well as it did.

  16. I just decided to give Kill la Kill a try when I found out it was written and directed by the same guys who created Gurren Lagann. So currently at episode 11, also watched up to episode 12 of Samuari Champloo. And finally after what was probably over a year, after all the anticipation, Heaven Feel Spring Song has finally released in the UK. I will on the weekend finally be able to complete the Heaven Feel trilogy.

Given that the first two were fantastic (in my opinion) I can't wait to see the conclusion.

I think that in the 80's & 90's series were either a mecha series or a comedy series. Now, I realise that that is a pretty sweeping statement and there were a number of series that weren't mecha or comedy but it seems to me, thinking back at the series that the 80's & 90's series that were being released on VHS when I started watching anime in 1996 were either mecha or comedy.

The mecha examples that come most readily to my mind are Macross and Gunbuster. Evangelion broke the standard mold for mecha shows that the others seemed to follow, which was I think a major factor in its poplarity. The comedy series that come most readily to my mind are Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura.
These series are sort of like my anime watching history, and watching them now they all have a definite artwork style that's very different from later series.

I think that if I was starting out watching anime now I'd be looking to watch more recent series rather than those 80's & 90's series.

See I've been able to watch stuff like Berserk, Eva. Those shows seem pretty timeless despite having that clearly 90's artstyle. However with the shows from the eighties I think it the general pacing differences of that era of Anime that bores me. Like Gundam for example, I've watched the first series and honestly it might have only been forty something episodes but it felt like an eternity of "next time..." stories. Nothing really happened, compare that to Monster or Full Metal which are longer shows, I just feel the pacing of those shows and the charatization is more my wave length.

Sci-Fi was a pretty big influence in getting me into anime too.

Yeah, it was pretty similar with me. Without series like legend of the galactic heroes or Yamato 2199 I wouldn't have even realized how good anime could be.

    15 hours ago, efaardvark said:

That era was a bit of a dry spell for me.  I like my SF "hard" and stuff like Akira and Neon Genesis.. isn't.  I'm not a big fan of the whole "gundam" thing from that era either, though I guess Patlabor was ok.  Otherwise I just couldn't get into any of it.  (I'm actually having a hard time even remembering any titles from early in that age.)  It wasn't until the late 90s and stuff like Ghost in the Shell that things started to get interesting again for me.  The late 90s also had stuff like Berserk and Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.  Not exactly my kind of SF, but good nevertheless.

I've only been into anime for a short time now, however I too find 90s as sort of a soft barrier for me. Anything older is just not that interesting for some reason. I mean there has been a few 80s shows I liked, but I've most stuck to 90s+ for most of the Anime I sit down to watch.

I'm with you on preferring series to movies.

My pet dislike in movies are the ones that are just a retelling of the series. I don't think it's possible to compress 5 or 10 hours of a series into a 90 minute movie without cutting out a lot of the context of the story, and what's often worse is that they make changes to the story which can sometimes be fairly major changes. In my view the best movies based on series are the ones that are either sequels or side-stories.

I remember hearing during the Code Geass Remake movies they made a lot of changes. Same goes for the Rebuild movies. I'm also fairly sure there were two Fate Stay Night Reproduction films released and Fate: Unlimited Blade Works the movie by Studio Deen - that one isn't technically a retelling of the series of 2015 cause it predates it. And I'm pretty sure Blue Gender had a condensed version of the series made called 'Blue Gender: the warrior' I've not seen it yet.

    I think my list for anime films are;

    Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion
    Wings of Honneamise
    Fate: Heavens Feel Presage Flower
    Fate: Heavens Feel Lost Butterfly
    Akira
Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion

I've seen others but I don't really like them all that much, so it be pointless putting them on the list.

  20. Okay going off you're interests these recommendations might be up your street. So the first ones would be Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't seen it. Then there's Ergo Proxy, this one is very atmospheric and is very phycological. Wolfs Rain, the last one a little more obscure but it a scfi-apocalyptic atmospheric show which is pretty interesting and full of mystery. Monster, probably one of the best psychological/thriller anime ever made. Then there's the three anime written by Gen Urobuchi, Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass and Fate/Zero.

Those are all worth a watch, as there again action, psychological and philosophical shows. Of the three Psycho-Pass is probably the easiest to get into, as it original and is set in a dystopian near future setting and as a really cool police procedural aspect to the show. Madoka Magica is likely the hardest as its a deconstruction of Magical Girls so... Fate Zero whilst awesome and one of my favourite anime is part of the Fate universe and that's a whole other rabbit-hole your stepping into there.

Hey everyone i am kinda new to the forum thing but i have watched anime since i can remember i am currently trying to find some anime the is not mainstream so if anyone would be kind enough to help i would be greatly appreciative.

    I know a couple, some more obscure than others;

    - Blue Gender, this was one of those adult swim anime. This ones a Mecha series, personally I liked it. The animation dose have some rough spots which holds it back, and also its got a pretty rushed ending.

    - Witch Hunter Robin, a show also from the adult swim period. This one is witchcraft meets police procedural. I however found the show incredibly dull and drawn out and have currently put it on the back burner,

    - Wolfs Rain, this show is one of my all time favourites despite how obscure it is. It a really atmospheric show but is an easy watch and very enjoyable.

    Those three I'd consider the really obscure shows I've seen however some others which aren't very mainstream but also aren't very niche and have a healthy amount of discussion are;

    - Ergo Proxy, this show is very atmospheric and is in my opinion a must watch. This show is still got a little bit of an online presence amongst the Anime Community, so it not totally forgotten like the previously mentioned shows.

    - Monster, I've been seeing this anime get more and more praise so it's clearly no longer obscure as it was. It a very intelligence and thought provoking show, so you've likely heard of it if not sat down and watched it however if you haven't seen it yet I'd highly recommend this show.

    - Parasyte the Maxim, despite being the newest anime I've mentioned this is a show hardly anyone talks about. However if you want a dark, mature action anime to watch this is again a good show to pick up.

Thanks for your view on the movie.

Next time I watch the series I'll give the movie another chance.  Watching it a second time and straight after the TV series might change my opinion of it. It wouldn't be unknown for me to enjoy a film or TV series more second time round.

Cool man, I mean I've heard and seen the film can have something of a mixed reception. I watched the series within a week and then I saw there were films, found out the third was a direct sequel and sat down on a night to watch it. Homura was my favourite character from the show, so getting a full feature film exploring her might make my opinion bias.

    I would agree that the first thirty minutes of the film is more fan service, it lots of nicely animated fights but little really going on. I'd always wanted to see the Holy Quintet as a unit fight, as a personal favourite part of the show was;

    Spoiler

when we go back in time and see Homura in her 'first timeline' fighting alongside a confident Madoka and Mami.

The transformations sequences do get a lot of flack, there is subtle story telling elements in them exploring the different personalities of the girls without directly coming out and saying 'this is the one that runs into things without thinking' so in that sense its defiantly novel. Also the opening might be my favourite from the series, from the song, the lyrics and the accompany animation it just perfect.

Also moving away from a Magical Girl show, and something decidedly more manly I've completed HxH Hunter Exam arc. Some people say that's the worst arc of the show. If that is the case, I have no idea how great the rest of the show going to be because I binged that in four days.
