  1. An electrical/automotive engineering guy by the name of Charles Kettering once said, "My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there." What's it going to be like? Flying cars? Mars colonies? Directed-energy weapons for the military? (Or Fedex, see below.) I thought I'd create a topic for news and chat about the future. Whether you're thinking it'll be dystopic or boring or utopic or whatever, share your thoughts. Just one rule: keep it real. Mild speculation is ok but talk about actual events or scientific/engineering know-how is preferred. I'll start things off with this news item.. Fedex is asking the US Federal Aviation Administration for permission to install anti-missile lasers on their airplanes. How'd you like to be the guy at the FAA who opened the envelope containing that request? "Um.. Boss, how do we handle this one?" https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/national-international/fedex-wants-to-install-anti-missile-lasers-in-its-cargo-jets/2859206/
  2. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/leiji-matsumoto-manga-creator-of-epic-space-sagas-dies-aged-85/ar-AA17HtVv?OCID=ansmsnnews11 I had no idea this guy was only two when wwii began! The violence and trauma he experienced probably inspired him to create the Yamamoto series, which is named after the real Japanese ship. It was adapted into a three season, two movie English series called Star Blazers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Blazers I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve read about it, and it’s sounds awesome! I like reading, especially about movies or tv shows that I may not have the time to see. He also created the Galaxy Express 99 films. Like the Ghost in the Shell, humans in the series transfer their consciousness to machines, achieving virtual immortality. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Express_999 RIP sir!
  3. The character portrayed by Matt Frewer on British television whose consciousness was transferred into an AI program following his fatal accident is possibly the most anime non-anime character ever. 1 - iKKM308.mp4
  4. The year was 1994. When it came to video games, no title existing at the time was a bigger lightning rod of controversy than "Mortal Kombat" and "DOOM" were. DOOM was ported to a wide range of different consoles but did you know that the 3DO port was originally supposed to feature FMV cutscenes to help develop and drive the plot? I'm not making this up, it was actually on the table for a time before they were cut from the final product. To this day, there are surviving screenshots from the ultimately DOOMed bonus content that was to be included in the game. One costume was ordered, and many sources have dubbed it the "Cyberdemon" costume. If that is what the creature in the screenshots is supposed to be, then it is obvious that the crew never encountered a Cyberdemon in-game; the Cyberdemon from the game was gigantic. You could have André the Giant wearing the costume and not do the monster's in-game counterpart justice. Although the words, "worst thing to walk on two legs since the Tyrannosaurus Rex" were being used to refer to the description of the Minotaur-like 'Barons of Hell' in the game manual, Cyberdemons were the enemy type that were actually as big as a T. Rex! Also note that the costume has no exposed wiring on its belly, no missile pod on one of its arms, or a hydraulic metal goat leg. The Cyberdemon was featured on the box art of "DOOM II: Hell On Earth". Unfortunately these were never released and there was no script, so we will never know what the motivations of the characters in these following screenshots were supposed to be. The failed 3DO console itself was used as a joke in the dialogue from the anime series, "Lucky Star" - Konata explained that the 3DO was one of the punishment prizes that her father would award her if she underachieved in school placement. ( monster eating protagonist's entrails?? ) ( DOOM Slayer's love interest? ) Could there be some kind of love triangle going on here between the demon, the DOOM Slayer and the girl? Or maybe it's something even more bizarre than that...like maybe a threesome? It seems pretty obvious who the "bull" in this 3-way relationship is going to be. I guess it's no worse than anything else that passes for 'entertainment' in the Western World today though. Sources: The True Story Behind Doom 3DO's 'Missing' FMV Scenes Photos from scrapped Doom FMV are terrifying, just not in a good way EDIT: Upon writing this initially, I had not yet seen this vlog of game programmer Rebecca Heineman who had worked on this port of the game, weighing in on the backstory of the ill-fated FMV sequences. In it, she confirms that the costume was actually intended to portray the Hell Barons ( not the Cyberdemon ), which makes more sense. She mentions something about a recent article pertaining to the FMVs but never posted a direct link in the video description. Heineman has a lot of insight on the expenses that go into film making, which is useful. Below is a link to the photos from the set on Github ( apparently uploaded by Heineman herself ) : https://github.com/Olde-Skuul/doom3do/tree/master/art/set-photos It is actually a pity that we never got a version of Classic DOOM with cool live action scenes like Resident Evil had...I have seen people draw a comparison to the lost cutscenes from the original "Twisted Metal" but the difference is that those were still eventually released.
  5. One subject near-and-dear to my heart is science fiction, with extreme emphasis on the science. Star Wars is not what I would call science fiction. It is swords and sorcery with fantastic, impossible weapons and “space ships” that fly and maneuver like airplanes.. even in the airlessness of space! It doesn’t care about physics, not even its own. It doesn’t even understand that a parsec is a distance, not a speed. It is “science” fiction only because somebody dropped it in the genre and was too lazy to fish it out. Star Trek is also not science fiction. It uses science-ish words in a generally self-consistent manner, but it abuses them to hand-wave impossible technology like “warp” drives into existence. It is about as plausible science-wise as Neon Genesis Evangelion. A more appropriate name might be bafflegab fiction. And just to short-circuit any heated "discussion" about the relative merits of the above as they pertain to entertainment, I happen to like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm not saying that they're in any way "bad". However, for the purposes of this topic they are hereby declared to be "not-science fiction". Not what I'm looking for and not what I'm here to discuss. I cite them only because they are well-known examples of the sort of "science" fiction that I'm trying to get past. ----- No, what I’m looking for here is science-themed anime (or manga, or books) based on real science. What I mean by science-themed is that science or technology or engineering must be a central element of the plot, character(s), and/or setting, and nothing important to the plot or setting of the story should contradict generally-accepted, real-universe physical laws as science currently understands them. It may extend them, or speculate at the edges of that body of knowledge, but it must not contradict their core. Tools and devices used must at least be theoretically possible to create and operate in the real universe, and ideally practically so. Space ships made out of unobtanium or requiring energy equal to the mass of the universe to function for example are not practical and would be disallowed. Likewise things like “psionics” or “superpowers” would be considered to be just different pronunciations of “magic” and likewise excluded from the category. Note however that applications of Clarke’s 3rd law are allowed, even encouraged, provided the “magic” can be explained using science and fabricated with real-world engineering techniques. In other words, no wizards, unless they’re really cyborgs with their own wifi-controlled nanite swarms. "Telepathy" between normal humans is allowed, if they've had the appropriate hardware surgically implanted. If you’re still not clear on the concept, take a look at this page (Mohs Scale) I’m looking for a 5 or 6 on the “Mohs scale”. Examples of anime that might make the cut: Planetes Dennou Coil (basically AR, just with really advanced hardware, and we already have stuff like pokemon go and Minecraft Earth) Sword Art Online, "Aincrad" arc (fantasy on top, yes, but a “hard” core of plausibly real-world technology underneath) Ghost in the Shell Space Brothers (borderline, could be considered simply slice-of-life or drama, but a focus on science and engineering as central to the setting and plot development saves it.) Moonlight Mile Rocket Girls Note that I’m making no claims as to the entertainment quality of any of the above, just stating that they have reasonably solid basis in real-world physics and engineering. IOW, they could be real in an alternate timeline or at some point in the foreseeable future. I've seen all of the above. If anyone has any others to recommend I’d love to hear about them. Many places, even book and movie stores, have “science fiction and fantasy” sections. Ugh. Do a google search on “science fiction” and you’ll get Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, etc. at the top of the list. With so many not-science topics obscuring the field it is hard to find the “real” science fiction that I’m after here.

  7. Not quite The Expanse but good practice for converting all those other dwarf planets in the outer solar system into habitats. If the field of such bodies extends out into the Oort cloud as well then we have a LOT of habitat-building to do. https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.07487
  8. How many of you have seen Godzilla Anime Trilogy? From what I've read, these movies are heavily divisive among the fans and general audience. Me and my friend watched all of them in the same day. There definitely were a lot of flaws we could see, but we could see a lot of merit these movies bring to the Godzilla mythos with fresh, unique ideas and concepts. We made a video where discussed in detail about all three movies, giving our individual scores in each area what worked or didn't work for us, before giving the overall final score: What did all of you think of these movies? I sometimes feel like that the hate from the general audience came because they were expecting something similar to those two recent American Godzilla movies, with their catering towards "fan service" and entertaining action scenes. Do these movies deserve all the scrutiny they get, or is there something more to them?
  9. Hello , As the title says i am looking for anime with witty story telling and script similar to the Monogatari series and Denpa Onna to seishun otoko(Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl) If you have seen these two or either one of them you should understand the gist of what i am trying to get at.Kindly help me if you can
  10. What Gory Anime should I watch? Since both are relatively short, Elfin Lied, Or Genocyber?
  11. I'm looking an anime like oban star-races, space dandy , kekkai sensen and redline, with a lot of cool species, if you know any please tell me. *I've alredy watched pokemon and digimon*
  12. Hello everyone, today I’ll be reviewing episode one of Sword Art Online. Let’s do this, shall we? As soon as it starts, within the first 20 seconds, I am HOOKED, and I can tell I will enjoy this. Unlike One Piece, I really like the art style of this. I guess I’m just into this sort of thing. Seriously, by the time the dude has fired up his RP headset, I’m shaking with excitement. The concept, the art style, the characters, it’s all awesome. For some reason, other VRV users have so many negative comments. Stuff like “this is trash.” And “why am I rewatching this sucky show? Guess I’m that bored...” Then again, VRV users always have something negative to say, regardless of how good a show is. A bit later on, and I’m really starting to like Kirito. He’s really nice, although something’s a bit... off about him. I’m really hoping quarantine makes humanity design some sort of huge game like SAO. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same, but it’ll still be awesome. Hopefully, they don’t trap us in this real-world version, though! Honestly, the reveal of Kayaba wasn’t a surprise to me at all. If them not being able to logout really was a bug, the writers would have missed an awesome chance. Plus, the whole story is centered around them being trapped in Aincrad. Klein getting left behind by Kirito is a bit devastating, but I’m sure we’ll see him again. I hope they’re a ship, since I always love LGBTQ+ representation in my fandoms. (Plus, cause I just love their dynamic.) Overall, even if it was a bit predictable, it was really good. So many elements added to the enjoyableness of it. I’ll give this episode 5 out of 5 stars. See you next week for episode two!
  13. Hi! I've been searching for an old anime that I once watched long ago - around the same time in which Armitage III was still being shown (I was able to find that anime, and now I'm looking for the other one that I watched around that same time) - I want to say 2005-06? The general scheme I recall about this anime was there were military personnel working with scientists that were trying to stop these huge spectral-like monsters that could basically float and fly anywhere. The monsters could pass through any solid objects, and when they passed through the human soldiers they would die instantly. There's two scenes that I remember distinctly: 1. A group of soldiers were going out on a mission in a cargo plane - there were these very long spectral monsters whizzing by in the distance - the pilots were trying to avoid them. Cut scene to one of the spectral monsters just going right through the cargo plane - leaving it physically unharmed but instantly killing the soldiers it phased through. It wasn't so much messy but the soldiers definitely died painfully! 2. In another scene, a special group of soldiers are coming back from a mission - upon their return, each of the soldiers are checked for whether or not they contain traces of the spectral monsters they fought against - one soldier was indeed feeling unwell and was placed into a sci-fi surgical table - a machine was then operated on by another scientist who was searching for and eliminating the traces of whatever this thing was from the soldier's body. They had to sift around quite a bit in order to find and destroy the foreign entity, each second passing bringing the soldier closer to his body's breaking point. I apologize if this is hard to describe, and whether its appropriate to just ask for help this way. If anyone has any good tips on searching through sci-fi anime from back in those days, I would really appreciate it!
  14. I'm about 5 episodes in & so far I like it which surprises me because it's all about killer mutant cockroaches in space & I hate roaches with a burning passion so go figure. I was actually so freaked out after the 1st episode that I cleaned my house from top to bottom. And no, I'm not exaggerating. I literally swept & mopped all the floors, did the laundry, took out all the trash, re-arranged the kitchen & scrubbed the surfaces in my kitchen & bathroom until they shined. **shudders** Ugh! I mean I like other bugs & insects but roaches...no thanks! Anyway, curious to see if anyone else here has seen this show & if so, what are your thoughts?
  15. So it looks like the US Army guys at Edgewood are saying that by 2050 cyborgs will likely be a real thing, both on the battlefield and in the general population. Sounds like a GitS world isn't that far off.
  16. Does anyone know where I can find the original mega man tv series online? I have been wanting to watch it again (havent seen it sice i was 10) and cant seem to find a site that has it. Thanks!
  17. Senki Zesshou Symphogear This is one of Japan's top selling anime, with 5 seasons, over the course of the past 7 years. Season 3 was #1 in sales for its season, while season 4 was ALSO #1 in sales for its season. AND season 3 beat ONE PUNCH MAN for the ENTIRE YEAR. And it isn't popular in the absolute bloody slightest outside of Japan. I'm confused too, don't worry. But if you want one of the best hype action shows of the decade, Symphogear is for you. It does damn near everything that people love about shounen action shows, except it does them far better than most actual shounens, despite Symphogear not actually being a shounen. AND it's a fucking musical. Didn't see that coming, did you. It ain't cutesy, it lives off of the rule of cool and more or less can't go more than 5 minutes without something exploding or it dies, with music that's about as cool as that whole concept is. Watch this scene, and witness our beloved main character parry tank shells with her bare fists. https://streamable.com/s/fs4vl/qkmkei Watch Order: Symphogear (a bit rough, don't judge the show based on this season. Still good, just not peak Symphogear.) Symphogear G (This is where Symphogear actually starts to shine, and it stays that way. A shitty side studio fucked up the first season, so they fired them and swapped out 90% of the staff and you're left with a season that's vastly superior to the first in absolutely every god damn way you could ever expect. Get. To. This. Season.) Symphogear GX (It got even prettier.) Symphogear AXZ (The animation got better.) Symphogear XV (Airing right now, and is really turning out to be a proper culmination and finale of 7 years of a franchise.) OOOOO Now that you've been so heartily informed of the best show ever, I'd love to hear what any of you think of it. First impressions based on this thread maybe, or impressions from you going to watch it! It's my favourite show by a mile, so I assure you I'm more than willing to chat your ear off about it, and if you aren't impressed by it... well, leave it to me
  18. Hi everyone, Please help me track down an anime I saw as kid. Certainly I don't remember the title, but I remember some of the plot and what the characters looked like. It was a sci-fi. I remember it was about a princess (I presume she was) being abducted and our heroes travel on a space ship to rescue her. The main male protagonist was thin, wore blue jeans, green T-shirt, carried a knife, among the rest of the rescuers there were 2 other guys, one wearing glasses, grey trousers, white T-shirt, was extremely fearful. Also there was a fat guy who most likely wore a green T-shirt, very fearful too. Also they had a robot teammate accompanying them. There was a scene where our rescuers reach something resembling a shaft, with blue walls. A descent into the cave. They start climb it down. As they look down, it’s descending into darkness, while when they look up, there’s a bright light above. Then they end up inside an underground cave. The only villain I remember was the Cyclops in the cave, this one scared me a lot as a kid. I remember there's a part where the princess is shown chained in the cave and the Cyclops was sleeping beside her/guarding. As the heroes are walking the cave, Pink Floyd's "Time" is playing (I remember that part was very scary back then). That's all I manage to remember, the easiest way to identify this would be the cyclops and Pink Floyd's "Time". It was a wonderful anime from what I remember. Somebody please help me find this. I absolutely loved it as a kid. Thanks in advance so much.
  19. If you haven't already, go watch Dennou Coil, aka Cyber Coil. It is kind of a fun sci fi about a bunch of kids and the fun they get into while wearing augmented reality glasses. In the real world we're not quite there, yet. Augmented reality in the real world is bounded by things like Pokemon Go and StarChart on smartphones, and Microsoft's HoloLens is still pretty bulky and expensive. Nowhere near the nearly-invisible glasses they wear in Dennou Coil. If you've never seen MSFT's 2015 E3 Hololens minecraft demo you should. Microsoft obviously wants us to go there. They've just announced their Minecraft Earth app (below), which to me looks like a portal, both in a marketing sense and a gaming sense. Clearly - to me anyway - the plan is to get people using the app to build content and attach it to the real world so that when things like Hololens get cheap enough there will already be a rich environment to work with. [mal type=anime id=2164] and Minecraft Earth,
  20. You know, one of the most intriguing things for me - from a Game Master perspective - about the NerveGear in Sword Art Online was that it could read the mental state of the wearer and communicate that back to the game engine. Not talking about just the obvious physical I/O here, but the player's emotional state as well. Imagine giving a save throw modifier based on how emotionally invested the player is in some aspect of the "game". In one episode of the SAO anime's "Aincrad" arc for instance there's a swordsmith character who really, really wants to make a great sword for a specific special customer. Imagine the game engine being able to distinguish that mental state from one where the same smith is just building inventory to sell. Imagine the game being able to tell that the player is aware that they absolutely positively need to make this next bow shot or sword blow count. The Kayaba Akihiko in me could sure find ways to use that information to ah, enhance my players' game experience. Give me a few minutes and I could probably come up with a whole class of magic/psi use dependent on the emotional state of the individuals wielding it for its effects. Or how about a Nerve Gear version of something like Soul Eater? Offhand I can think of several animes where this sort of technology could be put to good(?) use in the game version. Of course the other side of that same coin is the one exploited by Sugou Nobuyuki (aka "Oberon") in the Alfheim arc to brainwash and control people. Fortunately things haven't gone that far in real life. There we (so far) only have to be concerned with the technology being harnessed to do things like maximize micropayment profits... https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/03/valve-software-dreams-of-analyzing-your-brainwaves-to-tailor-in-game-rewards/
  21. The almost Hentai series HSOTD went on a hiatus following the Author Daisuke Satō’s death in March 2017 but now the franchise is undergoing a heavy petition in order to have it completed. The story follows a group of high school students caught in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The Anime was produced by Madhouse studios and published by Sentai Filmworks The ongoing petition is for HSOTD to be given to another studio/Author to have both the Manga and Series completed At the first time of seeing this this only 5000 people had signed But now there are over 47k Supporters! PLEASE ALL ANIME FANS EVERYWHERE SHOULD SIGN THE PETITION! Use this link https://firstinfosite.com/2018/12/27/latest-trending-anime-news-highschool-of-the-dead-season-two-petition-update-december-2018/ or Just search for High school of the dead/firstinfosite and once you find the website... PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION!
  22. SO, SSSS.Gridman just finished. Thoughts? And if you haven't seen it by chance.... do that. (Ah and be wary of spoilers past this point. You don't want this spoiled.)
  23. Okay, I am so behind on Voltron: Legendary Defenders. However, I was cursed with a spoiler which I thought was fan-made. Apparently. . . SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE SERIES To wrap up the series, I guess . . . Allura changed the Quintessence in Haggar's (or Honerva's, which ever have you) vessel in order to change it into a life-giving force to restore what has been done. Allura, realizing the risks, says her final farewells to the Paladins. As she says farewell to her team . . . she does what I didn't expect . . . SHE . . . FUCKING . . . KISSES . . . .LANCE FUCKING MCCLAIN!!!! The playboy! The womanizer! The freaking goofball . . . the literal asshole of the bunch!!! (Granted I still love Lance with all my heart because he is one of my Voltron babies!!!) Ladies and Gentleman, this winner of the VLD Shipping Race is . . . . Lance x Allura Ask me who triggered I am . . . go ahead, I don't mind . . . . Because readers . . . I AM FUCKING LIVID AS HELL!!! Welp! There goes all my ships . . . but being a fujoshi . . . there was no way I was going to get that satisfaction. I mean the Fujoshi community has already been blessed with Yuri on Ice, Banana Fish, Yarichin Club, Kiss Him, Not Me (I really like that series, it literally depicts my life), Dakaretai Otoko Ichii, Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantica . . . we've got a lot of goodness. With that being said. I shall graciously degrade myself You have won this time, Lance x Allura . . . I submit to your canonical existence. but Klance and Sheith shall never die! Yanushi Fujoshi, Out!
  24. Whatever happened to shooting starlets musumet anime? It feels like it didn't exist.
  25. The show staff have OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED that LELOUCH IS DEAD. They have been repeating this for 10 years. This was confirmed in interviews, live commentaries, tweets, the official guide book, the new epilogue they made (2009), and the sequel's name is even "Lelouch of the Resurrection". (Mind you, the sequel is a single movie and not a season, and it's part of the recent movies' alternate universe, but Lelouch's fate is identical in R2 and the movies!) There's a Code Geass community database on reddit which gathered all the information we have, all the official statements, etc, and then goes over the code theories' points and shows how they are contradicted by the anime itself. The anime itself makes it impossible for Lelouch to have the code. It's a long post, but any Code Geass fan will want to read it. As an example, here is an excerpt from "Geass Memories", a series of tweets made at the 10 year Code Geass anniversary which talked about how they made the anime 10 years earlier: - "Before I started writing the story of a person called Lelouch, I confirmed with Taniguchi-director something. That thing was that THE END OF LELOUCH WILL BE DEATH." - "At least he is aware of his sins and pays for them with HIS DEATH." - "This man called Lelouch will pay for his sins by HIS DEATH. The story follows him till he finally make this decision." - "Probably this Lelouch we see in the first episode of the series wouldn't CHOOSE DEATH. He would try something to avoid it. He couldn't DIE, for Nunnally as well. But we see him changed in the last episode." Official source Screenshot Translation Another example, this one from the official guide book which clarifies the Zero Requiem: - "For those two who bear the heavy sin known as killing their fathers, they share the belief that they can forgive each other by imposing the greatest punishments on themselves. Death for Lelouch who wishes for a tomorrow with his sister, life for Suzaku who wishes to atone for his sins through death." Picture of that page in the guide book Many many many more can be found in the Code Geass community database.
