Terraforming the dwarf planet

Recommended Posts

Not quite The Expanse but good practice for converting all those other dwarf planets in the outer solar system into habitats. If the field of such bodies extends out into the Oort cloud as well then we have a LOT of habitat-building to do.

Terraforming the dwarf planet: Interconnected and growable Ceres megasatellite world

We analyse a megasatellite settlement built from Ceres materials in high Ceres orbit. Ceres is selected because it has nitrogen, which is necessary for an earthlike atmosphere. To have 1g artificial gravity, spinning habitats are attached to a disk-shaped megasatellite frame by passively safe magnetic bearings. The habitats are illuminated by concentrated sunlight produced by planar and parabolic mirrors. The motivation is to have a settlement with artificial gravity that allows growth beyond Earth's living area, while also providing easy intra-settlement travel for the inhabitants and reasonably low population density of 500/km^2 To enable gardens and trees, a 1.5 m thick soil is used. The soil is upgradable to 4 m if more energy is expended in the manufacturing phase. The mass per person is 10^7kg, most of which is lightly processed radiation shield and soil. The goal is a long-term sustainable world where all atoms circulate. Because intra-settlement travel can be propellantless, achieving this goal is possible at least in principle. Lifting the materials from Ceres is energetically cheap compared to processing them into habitats, if a space elevator is used. Because Ceres has low gravity and rotates relatively fast, the space elevator is feasible.

Ok, so not a lot of astrophysics or science in this one but I thought it was cool nevertheless...

“The TAGSAM head performed the sampling event in optimal conditions. Newly available analyses show that the collector head was flush with Bennu’s surface when it made contact and when the nitrogen gas bottle was fired to stir surface material. It also penetrated several centimeters into the asteroid’s surface material. All data so far suggest that the collector head is holding much more than 2 ounces of regolith.”

So much in fact that the plastic flap that was supposed to close and seal the sample inside is stuck open, leaking the material that was collected inside the TAGSAM head.
There was no hard deceleration on impact either.  The surface material at least is extremely loosely bound together.  Someone at work said it was like hitting a big, fluffy pillow full of gravel.

How many of you have seen Godzilla Anime Trilogy? From what I've read, these movies are heavily divisive among the fans and general audience. Me and my friend watched all of them in the same day. There definitely were a lot of flaws we could see, but we could see a lot of merit these movies bring to the Godzilla mythos with fresh, unique ideas and concepts. We made a video where discussed in detail about all three movies, giving our individual scores in each area what worked or didn't work for us, before giving the overall final score:

What did all of you think of these movies? I sometimes feel like that the hate from the general audience came because they were expecting something similar to those two recent American Godzilla movies, with their catering towards "fan service" and entertaining action scenes. Do these movies deserve all the scrutiny they get, or is there something more to them?
