Unpopular Opinion: I do not care for magical girl anime

It depends really. I can’t say I dislike the genre as a whole due to the fact that Cardcaptor Sakura is on my alltime top 20. I also enjoyed Princess Tutu & Petite Princess Yucie quite a bit. Expand the definition a bit more & there are even more titles I like (Magic Knight Rayearth, Kobato, Little Witch Academia, Madoka, etc). As to PreCure, I don’t really get the hype. The versions I tried to watch never made it past the 3 ep point with the exception of Tropical Rouge (currently on my hold list). Even in that case, it’s impossible not to be aware that I am NOT the target audience 😂 Very cartoonish, but I still get a certain enjoyment from it. Same as with the Hanna Barbera cartoons I grew up (derivative & corny as hell, but I have so many lines of dialogue committed to memory  🤣 )Laura’s probably my favorite character, reminds me Konosuba’s Aqua, but somehow not annoying :P

I think the genre for me that matches your level of dislike is the idol or I-want-to-be-a-celebrity ones. But even there, there are exceptions (Zombie Land Saga, Carole & Tuesday, Kageki Shojo)

And maybe an exception for me could be Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka.

Got to agree, personally am not a fan of slice and life set in schools too. Madoka Magica series and its third film Rebellion however were exceptions to that general rule I find myself abiding by.

Then again those were both written by Gen Urobuchi and well if you've watched Psycho Pass or Fate Zero you can guess why that's the exception.

Totally agree, the genre is very different to watch I like to watch. That said I've watched a lot of slice or life shows like Toradora, School Rumble and Golden Times, so I honestly don't know why I have such a distasted in magical girl shows maybe its as you say the overly cuties nature of them that puts me off.

For me, it has to be a really special magical girl anime to get my attention. Sailor Moon is the all time representative of the genre, but the one I can vouch for as my all-time fav is Magic Knight Rayearth. A combination of magical girl and isekai(before this genre had a title), it was birthed by the lady manga-ka of CLAMP. Look them up, they are pretty awesome. Cardcaptor Sakura, Angelic Layer, Chobits and character designs for Code Geass all products of CLAMP.

Borrowing Wikipedia’s definition

Quote

Idol (アイドル, aidoru) anime and manga are a category of Japanese fictional media centered on idols, a type of entertainer in their teens and early 20s marketed to have a close relationship with their fans and commercialized through merchandise. Beginning in the 1980s, anime was used as a vehicle to promote an up-and-coming idol's singing career, but has since then created various anime media mix projects centering on fictional singers.

For example the Love Live franchise. They commonly combine attributes of the Music, Drama, Slice of Life & CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) genres. There seem to be an increasing number of male idol (boy bands) too though.

I like Zombie Land Saga though because it’s essentially a parody where the girls all happen to be zombies. Lots of slapstick humor, but also some feelz
