What was your first anime?

Ok, so, I'm curious as to what was everyone's first anime on here. Luckily mine was DBZ back when Toonami was on TV on weekdays instead of the Saturday it's on these days. Back when they had their own music videos. Man, I miss those. So, Dragon Ball Z was my first actual anime, but it was the original version with no swearing... well, except in the movies I think there was a little bit. The Z movies definitely had a drunk Roshi some of the time. lol But my first adult anime was my big sister's Ninja Scroll VHS tape that she recorded it on. That was my first introduction into the more adult side of anime, and it was awesome. I loved it. I was just a kid when I watched it though. lol Like, before adolescence. We weren't strict with what kind of stuff mom and dad watched when I was there. I like to think it made me grow up quicker, but I'll never know for sure.

How about you all? What was your very first anime that got you hooked? You could include which adult anime got you into the more serious side of anime too, like I did, if you want to say so (and I'm NOT talking about the pornographic stuff).

My first anime was Star Blazers, the Americanized version of Space Battleship Yamato, which I’d watch while getting ready for school when i was 10 or 11. I was so obsessed with it I would set my alarm to watch it over summer break & go back to bed afterwards. My first uncut/unedited anime on VHS is harder to pin down. I’m thinking Project A-ko, Devil Hunter Yohko or some random eps of Ranma 1/2 when I was in my 20s. I think the first full series I owned on VHS was Slayers.

I remember my first introduction to anime that was outside the usual shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh was through watching SAO on Netflix. I was around 12/13 at the time, and I got hooked on anime for a while. I watched some other Netflix anime like Black Butler, along with some other titles I found while browsing online. My first really "mature" anime was Black Lagoon, and I was pretty impressed with it. After that I went through a short phase of not liking anime and thinking it was too childish before I got back into it in my late teens with some older titles, like the original Evangellion and Sailor Moon which was my first DVD in my entire physical media collection!

How is Slayers by the way? I haven't seen it.

How is Black Lagoon? I've heard really good things about it, but don't have it yet.

My first anime was DBZ. I first started watching it on TV. After that I did not any anime until my friend recommended me AOT (Attack on Titan) and then I got addicted to anime.

Despite having a good bit of humor (some of it rather silly) it also got pretty dark at times with the larger story. Unfortunately some of the gags got pretty repetitive in seasons 2 & 3. Still have a lot of nostalgia for it though. Even after all these years, I’ve still only watched the dub version, though I have seasons 1-3 on dvd & would like to rewatch it with the original japanese language/english subtitles someday. I also have seasons 4 & 5 on dvd but haven’t gotten around to watching.

It's really good, always on my recommendations list. One of the few instances where I prefer the English dub over the sub. It's an action packed ride that's fun from start to finish!

Let's see, the first anime I saw was a couple of episodes of The Heroic Legend of Arslan, which I found on TV by accident, but at that time I didn't know it was anime but realised that it was a style of animation I'd not seen before. The following week they showed the second part of 3x3 Eyes.

Then while looking in the local record and video shop I saw the VHS tapes of 3x3 Eyes and I decided to buy the whole series, three tapes, so that I could watch the first part that I'd missed on the TV broadcast.

I can't remember what came next but I know that Gall Force: New Era and Gunbuster where among my early purchases. In those days I used to visit record shops to see what, if any, anime they had. When I worked at Shepherds Bush I went to Tottenham Court Road once a month to visit the Forbidden Planet* and the big HMV store both of which had a good selection of anime related stuff.

*at the time the Forbidden Planet was the best Sci-Fi shop in London.

Always glad to meet a fellow DBZ fan. ^^

Reminds me a lot of how DBZ was. A lot of humor, but plenty of dark times too. I'll see about trying to get Slayers at some point. Thanks for describing it, now I really want to see it. ^^

Sounds totally worth the watch! I need to nab it when I can. Thanks for the description. ^^

Nice!! Remember those VHS days? I thought it was so neat and convenient as a kid. We still have a lot of our old VHS movies. lol Seems to be a shame to just throw them away, but we do need a VCR if we plan on watching them again. It's pretty cool that you had access to the best sci-fi shop in your country. We're basically in the boonies, not even a police station, just a fire station, so I can only speculate how awesome it was being so close to such a cool place.

My first was watching Pokemon in the 90s. I watched Dragonball and Hamtaro on Toonami before finding Yu Yu Hakusho and that was where my fandom truly began. Though I stuck to what was on TV until around 2009 when I discovered the greater world of anime like forums and fansubs.

That was how it was for me until about the mid-90s. Except my family didn’t have cable vack then so I was restricted to stuff like Voltron, Robotech, Mazinger Z, pre-Z Dragonball & the DIC version of Sailor Moon.

For me it was My Neighbor Totoro, the early 90's VHS. I was a very small child at the time. In retrospect, it might have been the perfect introduction. It was impossible to not be aware of it's origins, but also was intensely relatable to me at the time as someone growing up in the rural American South. Nature and small town life was all around me. I'd be wandering and exploring the forests near my house for fun on a nearly daily basis and living on what used to be farmland. Tatsuo, Satsuki, and Mei felt like the kind of people who easily could have been my own neighbors.  So as a kid with one of my exposures to Japanese culture was something where I had to confront and become aware of this different culture and differences but also immediately resonate with from shared experiences. It's honestly something I might wanna rewatch again now that I'm older and recently moved cross country to a big city, sort of reconnect with my home and childhood.

Ohh, I forgot all about Yu Yu Hakusho. I must've forgotten that it was on Toonami. I couldn't remember where I'd seen it, so that makes sense. Our wifi sucks too much so I can't watch any online anime, but I really wish I could. Which fansub was your first?

Yes, I thought VHS tapes were great they had a whole TWO episodes on each tape!  I still have a couple of VCRs, but I have no idea if they still work. The arrival of DVDs was quite a revolution, most had four episodes to a disk and often had a few extras. 🙂

I wouldn't go as far as to say the Forbidden Planet was the best Sci-Fi shop in the country, but it was certainly the best in London. The HMV shop which was just a few minutes walk away was huge, and between them they had quite a good selection on anime titles. The downside of visiting those two shops was that one was on Tottenham Court Road, the other on Oxford Street, which are the busiest places in London everywhere was just rammed with people.

Yeah, I thought DVDs were so awesome, I've personally collected a lot over the years, with some being anime, and some being live action. Have you amassed a collection of your own over the years of DVDs and/or blu-rays?

Yes, over the last 26 years I've amassed quite a huge collection of DVDs, and my Blu-Ray collection while not as large is steady growing. 🙂

(My wallet is very glad of my CR subscription because it means I can watch lots of new anime without it suffering too much. 😄)

I'll bet. I don't actually have an income of my own, o I'm restricted to birthdays and Christmas, but it's enough for me. I've already got a bin full of DVDs and blu-rays. lol

I believe mine was either Glitter Force or one of the Pokémon animes. Although SAO was what actually got me into anime.

SAO was awesome. Scary thing is I could see a situation similar to that really happening in the future. But I'm also known for excessive worry and fears. lol Nice first.

I agree with that. I just wish I'd be able to see where it goes in the next 100 years.
