Sony wants to buy Kadogawa

So now Sony wants to buy Kadogawa, and we taking big company here, do they really want to conquer the west

So what your though and what happen if they buy Kadogawa.

I've read a couple of reports about this and Kadogawa own quite a large slice of the anime and manga industry.

Sony also owns quite a large slice of the anime and manga industry.

Overall I don't  think it it's a good thing for any one company to own too big a slice of any industry and I think Sony buying Kadogawa could end up putting far too much power and influence over the anime and manga industry in the hands of one company.

Certainly true. Ironically one of the most common complaints among anime fans is not having a single access point to everything they want. The downside to anime’s increased popularity is that big corporations now see it as a lucrative market to be exploited. Meanwhile fans sometimes are so fixated on art & culture they lose sight that it’s some folk’s livelihood & respect/admiration doesn’t pay the bills.

I still remember when ADV Films was the dominant company for anime in the US. Then they went bankrupt, the remnants became Sentai Filmworks & now I believe they’re owned by AMC & streaming as HiDive. Currently I think Netflix is probably Sony/CR’s biggest competitor for anime outside Japan.  
 

I also remember when CR bought out Right Stuf & the drama it set off in the fan community. The biggest change I’ve seen is they all-but eliminated their hentai/doujinshi offerings & related merch (models/figures). That wasn’t my niche & in the dozen or so orders I’ve placed since then I haven’t seen many changes. Not as many bargains during sales & packaging isn’t a bulky, but still better than Amazon & nothing has been damaged (primarily manga & blu-rays). My one complaint is not being able to use Paypal if there are pre-orders in my order. Between CR & Amazon, CR has a higher minimum order for free shipping & better prices on manga, but sometimes you’ll find better deals on Amazon for blu-ray. The issue with blu-ray on Amazon is sometimes it’s a licensed blu-ray, but the wrong REGION so you have to be careful ordering (thankfully bootlegs don’t seem like much of an issue except for Ebay)

I suppose what i’m trying to say in the above wall of text is that while these sort of developments can have a significant impact on the industry, I’ve been a fan/watcher/consumer of anime for 40+ years & I see no reason to believe I won’t remain one until the day I die (or go blind)
