We're asking you!

Frost

Question

Hello everyone!

We are currently seeing some positive changes in the community, an example being the gorgeous 12 new layouts that @Optic so graciously made - But I wanted to get some perspective from other members around the forums on what other changes you all would like to see!

It is no lie that we have currently had some loss in the forums - Between the holidays and losing a handful of our regularly active members, there has been a slight decline. But I am hopeful that things will be turning around shortly! I just want to take a minute to personally thank the new members who have joined and have been actively posting, but also to the handful of you all that log on every day to keep things running! You are an important part of this community and that is why I am creating this post!

Getting everyone's perspective is important since it is every one of you who make this forum what it is today -

So, all that being said, what changes would you like to see? Please, do not be shy, as it is important to know how you all truly feel about how things currently are!

You can discuss anything and your concerns or issues will be addressed-

One issue that I have personally been discussing with Optic is a reward system for being active - This means discussion oriented posts - Non spam or chat related topics. A reward system can be many things, a few examples being points or status. I personally feel like personal reward for making positive contribution to the forums means that people have a personal goal to work towards, other than just your post count. I am curious as to how people feel about that. It is currently unclear as to what these positive rewards would be, but your opinion would be noted!

My own personal goal for AF would be to see it grow and become much more discussion oriented than it already is! But I also would like there to be many positive changes for everyone - things that would make each and every member much happier to be here at AnimeForums, rather than another community.

So, discuss! What changes would you all like to see? Contests? Games? Let us know!

So we can only gain badges and level by contests? I'm confused.

no currently you will also obtain badges as you posts and like numbers increase thru participation , specialised badges are gained by contests

This is just a list of examples of changes that we may want to consider. All of these are opinions and idea, so please don't take any of them as an offense towards any existing thing to AF atm.

Competitions:

  • As everyone was speaking of different competitions, we could set each one to be both community and staff based depending on the seriousness of the contest.

  • We could do separate contests for different categories, which we can create when competitions actually start.

  • Prizes are one of the most “difficult” things to apply to these kind of contests. Although we can't really give physical prizes (since you and me both know that none of us are just made of money xD) we can always increase the competitiveness of the badge and level up system on the forum in order to get a much more active event criteria. (i will get onto badges and the level up system later)

  • Ideas of contests: Drawing (can involve anything from anime genre all the way to games and movies, exedra), Writing, scripting, making a play, writing a song, devising your own game, best role play, performances, best meme, best post wins, cuteness contest….. Yeah, we can have a lot of contests. That's less of a concern to me then most, since we will always be able to gain contest ideas.

  • I would say that allowing maybe 2-3 members of staff to work on these projects, since overcrowding it may get a bit too complicated and it kind of ruins the fun of a “contest” if you have 10 staff members working on it and only 12 members xD (meaning that staff are more likely to win ;))

  • I was also wondering if we should make a new subsection on the anime forums for the different competitions so it's easier to keep progress. I don't know about you all, but when ryuji did the old writing contests it got pretty confusing on where you had to go to check the results and see the old posts and whatnot

  • As always with these kind of things, we will need to take upvotes on who would like to see these kind of contests go down and whatnot, so i may make a thread to tally up the amount of people who would vote for this kind of thing (remember, although most of us want this kind of thing, i was wondering if we should make it more public as well, since let's be fair, a contest has to have at least 10 or more contenders to feel really tense and more of a competition! Obviously we can still do it with less, but it's more likely you will win out of 5 people :P)

Community builds:

  • As far as the community side of things go, we have made a pretty good name for ourselves. So, what i was thinking, is we could kind of show that off a bit ;)

  • Now, for a front page style show off, we could do a couple of things. One of these which i was thinking off would be an upvoted member of the month (or even random, just to make people feel special more than anything ^w^) and that member will have a little crown for the month :D.

  • Another thing that could be added is stuff like AF’s best moments of the year, and highlight a couple of your personal things that you loved optic :D this could also be a good use of the chat, since we can make “ AF’s top 10 sentences of the year”. Let's be honest, this kind of thing would happily spur up memories in existing members whilst granting newer members an insight into our craziness xD

  • This can also be extended with things such as showing off the most active community members and so on.

Posting on the forums:

  • One way to increase the amount of posts i feel would be to give some people more creative elements in the forums creation section. This could include allot more of a tool-system which they could use to monitor over and make individual threads with.

  • Although this part is not as big of a concern, i also think it would be amazing if we could just upload images onto threads or the chat rather than using the URL. it takes WAY too much effort to go and look for a url when you could just copy and paste or upload an image.

Individual sections: (IK, but hear me out xD):

  • When i said about my own corner, i got an even better idea. Since we already have the anime forum team, how about we make a subsection for individual members to post their stuff and manage their own part of AF in order to give out a creative freedom. Obviously, before everyone goes on about “ each individual member means so much space” thing, i was thinking we do a system where the individual has to ask optic to become a member of staff for this section (not sure what to call the staff members yet. Maybe the corner crew or something). Once you have proven you are worthy to work in this section, you get your own little bit that you can manage and create what you please in. this could provide a lot more creativity and feedback side of things to the forum for the off topic section, and allow small things to grow. E.G: Kirys signature art, metro’s photography… exedra.

  • Now, i can also understand the obvious argument of : THis not being anything to do with the original point of AF being an “anime forum”. Well, i can kind of counter this with the argument of this allowing community members who are willing to dedicate the time into AF to try and give both a better draw and to feel apart of a community. It also allows us all working on this segment to have the ability to teach people things like the anime artstyle and whatnot as well as scripting or photography or blah blah blah.

  • Also, i cant stress on the fact that members here have to be dedicated and kept to a minimum, since i can easily understand that with too many members it would just get overcrowded quickly. This would also mean allowing only the member responsible for their bit to be able to post threads there. So allowing us to kind of moderate our own bits will be crucial, but also means that those given this opportunity MUST be trustworthy and upvoted by both optic and the community.

Well, that all i got for now :P sorry that it's not much.

Badge system sounds interesting~ I also like the custom member title. A forum I use to be a member of use to have custom member titles and you changed them by using points or currency earned by making posts. You could also change the appearance of your username on the forums. ^_^

@Davis has been working on his photoshop skill, but I would have to ask him personally if he would be interested in things like that. :P

Also, you've been raving about giant avatars for a month or so - The current size of the avatars are standard and just fine in my opinion. xD What is this fascination with larger avatars? That is more of an issue @Optic would have to handle but I think larger avatars would effect the layout to some extent and be troublesome :P

i suppose i could try making titles/badges never tried but i can have ago depending on whats decided

also i read somewhere on this thread on currency i believe this is a great idea.

also i contests are a great idea, i probs only would enter the GFX one as im not god at anything else.

looking forward to the changes

Thank you for your input, @Davis ! I was hoping to hear back from you soon!

All of these changes and things are hypothetical, of course, until it is all sorted out, agreed on and approved by Optic. I merely wanted to see everyone's opinions on things they would like to see happening in the forums over the next year~

I would definitely love to get with you about some form of graphics contest, and if you were able to have the free time, possibly you and I could host something. ^_^

I really enjoy the concept of having honorable moments for AF~ Regarding members or posts. It sounds like a positive way to recognize members who are actively contributing to the community. It would also be fun~ :P

Also, thank you for submitting your light novel xD

Are members free to start a contest of their own (given they advertise, of course)?

I don't personally see why it would be an issue, but @Optic would be able to answer it better than I can~

Honestly as long as it is appropriate for the forum, you're pretty much free to post whatever you like.

(Also as long as you stay in the appropriate sections of the forums ;) )

What type of contest are you wanting to start, out of curiosity?

id be surprised if @Optic doesn't go ahead with it and these seem like areas that can fit in to the forums dynamics and as I see it only benefit them not hinder

@Kirry

I'm thinking a literal Freestyle contest could gain interest. An all-encompassing sort of thing, not held down by a specific medium like art or writing but allowing all mediums in one colossal contest. Things such as art (abstract, fanart, etc), writing (poetry, fanfic, etc), website design, crafts (jewelry), that sort of thing.

I'm not sure how voting would be done unless there's a specific criteria that could be used, since members judge each piece fairly so it doesn't insult the artist/writer/designer/whatever and opens up for constructive critique. There'd be a lot of competition, but I feel that competition would make the contest worth it and extremely high quality.

That is an excellent idea! <3 I would really love to partake in this contest if you were to host it~ It would also be a fun way to gain some momentum for contests since it would be open to all mediums-

However, it would have to include fair, unbiased voting since it would be multiple mediums.

Idea- everyone in the forum could vote for someone's work, excluding their own work. This way it is fair and unbiased (or, as unbiased as it could be in this given situation)

Drat, you caught me!

I will say this, though: I may need a partner to help me out with it to make sure it doesn't just get forgotten. I'm absolutely hopeless at collecting votes and whatnot, but I'm good at getting things started haha

I'll start on the post tonight though~

Really glad everyone is getting psyched about it! Be sure to spread the word once you have something going, this way everyone can be involved. ^_^ I would most likely host it in "Creative Corner" and then go from there~

@Gwen - If you would like some help with getting things together, let me know. We can discuss things over AF, or I have other methods of communication if you prefer. Anything to help you out, let me know!

Does anyone else have any other ideas? I would really like to keep this idea thread going. ^_^ So far we have really positive responses on some of the ideas already presented, and it seems the majority of you so far would like to see a currency or points system, a better badge or status system and more contests that hold reward! Let me know if anyone has any other amazing ideas they would like to see~

A couple things from a couple different forums I've been on...

Shop system. So you can collect points (currency, as it's been stated here) from posts and contests (which yield more points) and then use it in a shop. Common items I've seen in forum shops are username effects (colours, glitter, etc), badges, and whatnot.

Competitions. But that's already been fleshed out pretty good.

And another thing was a monthly "newspaper" created by a team. The one I saw would give general news related to anime/manga that happened that month, member interview section (they'd choose about four members a month and interview them), art submission, short stories (or even an ongoing story), sometimes recipes (especially around Christmas), and a team quiz challenge (two teams go head to head and the results are posted in the newspaper). There's lots that can be done for it and its a nifty little idea.

I actually really love the newsletter idea! It's super cute! I would not mind contributing to something of that nature ^_^

Yes, I have also been on a forum with a shop and I think it's rather fun~ I also have seen custom user names and I think that is a really fun idea as well.

I decided to go dig around a bit in that forum I mentioned with the newspaper and pulled up some covers for you guys:

Each issue would feature a bit of a collage section showcasing entries from the gfx competions

example:

And there was always an ongoing story with one chapter published each issue (at least one story, quite often two would be running at the same time)

sample:

Also, I mentioned a team quiz challenge. It was actually more of a guessing game. The players got the images/questions in separate PMs and submitted their answers through those PMs. I was actually part of the junior mod team that got to play against some members in these sample pages:

02790d3bea954d3c9e1b76713723ba97.thumb.png.9fab7cf25a874934ecefa4b2fa6d9c47.png

It seems there's a bit of interest in roleplay, which is why I wanted to share this next page from that forum's newspaper. Okay, so one thing I've encountered quite often in forums is some sort of roleplay "cafe" or "hotel" or whatever. It's a thread run by someone as a means for general roleplay (with members taking on the part of customers and staff). One of the general roleplay threads in this place was a candy shop. And to encourage members to partake in the roleplay, thus creating activity and contribution, the candy shop actually had an advertisement in the newspaper for valentine's

sample:

Actually, with how flashy it is, it's more of a magazine than a newspaper. But, it isn't a necessity to be so flashy. These were just some samples that I pulled up. They also usually had a section for newer movies, and a recipe submission, as well as any upcoming events, quite often artworks (submitted by members ofc) would be shown off at the end of the newspaper, there was always an interview with someone (whether it be staff or someone from the creative community).

Well, it's a nifty idea anyway. Not sure how well it would work here, but figured I'd mention it and let you all see some samples

i only do GFX was the rest of reply meant for kirry possibly ?

sorry @Davis it was all meant for you but I had miss read Kirrys post thinking you had submitted a light novel previously

I still feel the same way tho even if some one is only good in one aspect but would like to try some thing else don't restrain your self just because you believe you'd be no good , and that was the point I was getting at

but I would like to see your GFX too
