A few questions on the site

Hey everyone,

I've been a fan of Japanese anime and manga for a little over 20 years now, and it's one of my main hobbies. Because of my career and life I never really got to go to conventions, or meet others who like what I like. I wanted to finally join a anime community just to chat with others and add my thoughts on stuff, along with maybe sharing some rare anime memorabilia since I've collected a lot over the years. I just have a couple questions:

- Are there other folks who are closer to my age on here? I'm in my early 30s now, and i certainly don't mind talking to people younger then me about the hobby because I love seeing people become interested in it. I just found when I was searching through stuff like Discord channels, etc that it seems very difficult to find anyone who is over 20, just to have someone to relate to. It's not a huge issue, but I was hoping maybe there were at least a few others that were older adults; or maybe I just suck at looking for things.

- Even though I haven't followed a community before, the only one I did try was the anime Reddit, and I was berated for saying that I'm not a big fan of calling people weeb, or at least others calling me it. I find it to be a derogatory term, and I'm not here to change other peoples minds about it, but I just don't want to be made fun of. I know they say you are suppose to wear it like a badge of honor or something like that, but I'm older and I find it to be self deprecating, on top of when I was younger I was bullied along with my friends many times back in the late 90s for liking anime, something that was still very uncommon. I just wanted to know if I decide to join this place, I won't be talked down to or at least used in a negative or demeaning way.

Thanks again, I am really looking forward to talking about anime and manga with everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hi @Yasu_Takagi, welcome to AF!

There are anime fans here from many different age groups, so I wouldn't worry about that.

We encourage members to be friendly with their opinions as noted in our Rules and Guidelines. Given that this community for anime fans from around the world, you certainly won't be chastised for liking anime here! Please, feel free to take a look around at your own leisure, post in topics or start new topics that interest you and if you have any questions or issues, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the welcome Optic. I did check that, thanks that's good. I mainly am just asking like I said, because I didn't have a good experience with the anime Reddit, and I guess I just don't want to be made fun of or called a "weeb" since I feel it's a derogatory remark to people.

ha! weeb!

no that was a bad introductory joke, tbh, i got nothing on jokes currently;

but yea, welcomes to's AF's

i doubt you will meet someone in AF who will call you a weeb (aside from me ?, though im just probably being a tsundere, as 90% of what i say is probably illegal truethful)

most of the guy's in AF are straight up, um, "non-jokers's ?", i cant remember the right term x.x, but they are all, (so far) very friendly people whom welcome you with big hands, (nobigbreaststho)

also, im in my aged 21, im somewhat not really watching anime at the moment, (due to how many things i have to study, and then when i am free, i either waste it all on playing games, drawing, or "studying anatomy"...its all for science reasons >.>

though, i do have my sights on a few anime's that i wanna watch; one being hataraku no saibou (cells at work), and two other i saw from a youtube video; sugar--something something ? (pink haired yandere? dont wanna get spoiled so avoiding anyyyything related to it for now) and a silent voice, -- a movie of sort, though i probably wont watch the movie one, but i might also...?

with those said --- i guess thats that ?!, now if only my government would announce classes getting suspended, i can actually do something aside from worrying on studying >__>

edit: though, you're an elder...so i should show more respect huh, ill try to remember so in the future ;o

or can i act casual whenever we talks ?!

Hello!

I'm 24.

AF is generally a pretty friendly place. If people are mean to you just let someone know and the issue will be resolved. It's not really a common issue here though.

Now onto the interrogation.

1) Favorite anime?

2) Favorite genre of anime?

3) Favorite manga?

4) Do you read Visual Novels?

5) If the answer to number 4 is yes, what's your favorite Visual Novel?

6) If the answer to number 4 is no, why not?

7) Is Ryu crazy? (The answer is yes)

9) Do you like math?

10) Did you notice I skipped #8?

~swats at @XII360 with a rolled up manga~  Respect your elders!  Darn Whippersnappers.  No respect I say, no respect!  ~winks at @XII360~

~coughs~  Ahem, welcome @Yasu_Takagi to the forums.  I think you will find us a friendly group who loves anime and loves to talk about anime.  Most of us will preface (or post-face) our jokes with a joke disclaimer so no worries there and 95% of the time, it will be a general joke (nothing personally aimed).  I personally am a big fan of puns so hopefully you can bear with me on some posts.  If you came from reddit, then it is no wonder that you are scarred beyond belief.  That is one messed up place (I only use reddit to keep up on the opinions, mostly negative, coming out of my profession.  I think reddit tends to fuel negativity or that is my experience with it anyways.).

So, about myself.  I am 33 years old, also been watching anime for well over 20 years now, so I'm in the same group that you are in :) I don't understand the "weeb" thing either.  I think these days people enjoy playing victims (and self-deprecating plays into that) as victims seem to get perks...  My opinion on it anyways.  If someone called me that, I'd probably give them a piece of my mind...the nonhospitable piece I keep as a backup when Southern charm has reached its limits.  No one here is going to be demeaning to you, and hopefully, you'll return the same kindness.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and warm welcomes, I appreciate it! I'm still new to the site but I was browsing a lot of the topics, reviews and such and it's really nice. That's great there is a wide variety of fans on here. Ryuji posted a questionnaire so here are my answers!

Now onto the interrogation.

1) Favorite anime?

My number 1 would have to be Slayers, but if we can add a top 5 the rest would be: Princess Mononoke, Project A-KO, Robot Carnival and Panty/Stocking

2) Favorite genre of anime?

That's difficult, I really love everything, from shoujo themes and romance to violent, dark stories. I'll say Shonen for the action.

3) Favorite manga?

Berserk. Other honorable mentions: Lone Wolf & Cub, Love Hina and Nana.

4) Do you read Visual Novels?

I have read some, but I'm not super knowledgeable in that area. I'd like to learn more though!

5) If the answer to number 4 is yes, what's your favorite Visual Novel?

Does Katawa Shoujo count? I know it was a fan made game, but I can relate to having a similar disease/handicap since I was a child and I enjoyed the characters.

6) If the answer to number 4 is no, why not?

7) Is Ryu crazy? (The answer is yes)

Sure!

9) Do you like math?

I do, but I was never that good at it (or didn't take it seriously) back in school. I try to learn more now though!

10) Did you notice I skipped #8?

No I didn't! :P

That's a nice list. Sadly I haven't watched any of those yet. Maybe in the future I'll have time to watch them. Mine include the anime with a score of 10 on this list:https://anilist.co/user/Ryuji123/animelist

You had me at romance and lost me at violent, dark stories xP Shonen is pretty good. Romance is my favorite.

You're in the right place then. I freaking love Visual Novels more than anime/manga combined. Btw, are you on Steam? Steam has a lot of good Visual Novels that go on sale.

Yep! I haven't gotten around to reading it yet but it definitely counts as a Visual Novel. My personal favorite is Symphonic Rain. It's amazing and the music is FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC!!! Like seriously, I'm always humming the music from this masterpiece of a Visual Novel. @drill will tell you xD

If you spend enough time talking to me, you'll learn just how truly crazy I am xP xP

Nice! I'm happy to hear you don't hate math like the majority of the planet xP Math is one of my passions. The other is Computer Science which I am majoring in with a minor in math. In fact, I'm taking Differential Equations this semester just for fun (needed another math elective) It's hard but awesome!

Just wanted to say thanks again Optic, XII360, Beocat and Ryuji, I appreciate all the kindness and I'm thankful to have found this place!

Ryuji if you like Romance, have you ever read Nana before? It was put on a long hiatus but it's a great love story. I also recommend Imadoki by Yuu Watase for a shorter story that's really beautiful. If you or others have a few suggestions for the visual novels then sign me up! I will check the Steam list like you mentioned too.

did somebody say...VISUAL NOVELS ?!

so what type of genre are we talking about ? sci-fi ?, horror ? eroge-focused  ?

generally, i have allot of eroge visual novels saved on my hard disk, this bad boy can store up to 1TB of pornography {imagine it in lelouch voice -- purpleeyeswtf one) games in it

one visual novel i can recommend, post hate, gods speed, (other words that end with going fast) -- if you're into managing a store -- and a bit of strategy --

kamidori alchemy meister by eushully; its one of my top visual novels to play --

though, should be given; but a visual novel usually contains R18 stuff, and kamidori isnt an exception to the list

visual novel form of stein's gate was fun too (if only my save data didnt corrupt though ..)

I'll just keep looking somewhere else. I don't know what that Twig persons issue is, but he/she doesn't have correct me on every message I post. Not really a great welcome to new people.

same, i mean, i somewhat had the same issue once ?, and i somewhat did told him off on his rights and wrongs (didnt exactly tell him, but i corrected my wrong understandings, like you're first time, and told him about what i disapproved, i.e whole "no game no life sketch shenanigans",

i swear, author is just getting bullied, its not sketch, if all that happened was body posture, he didn't copy the characters look or anything it came from his own mind -_-

artist's cant be expected to, like, mass create new-unimaginable character posture, that's pure bs smh

Yyyyyyyeeeahhhhhh...... I kinda dislike Discord for that. I'm 27, and guys who are between the ages 16 to 20  used to make fun of me for my age. Course they didn't know I was an Artist etc, since at the time I was incognito using a substitute account from my Pro Art Account (cuz I don't mix my work with personal stuff). Still it sucked though.

Reddit is like Tumblr - full of SJWs aka Trolls and "extremists." It's not really a good site for mature minded people to go to in my opinion - which is why I don't use Reddit and barely use Tumblr.

Somebody is always being a whinny, cry baby, and they attack you if you don't act that way too or even if you disagree with them. It's really pathetic tbh.  Most people who call others a "weeb" are weebs themselves, so you should just ignore their hypocrisy.

I believe it is against the rules here for people to attack/harrass others for whatever reason. If anything, they have mods who can handle any problems you have.

OR you can block/ignore the person by adding them to your ignore list here. That way they can't reply back to you or anything.  (Yes I know I'm new, but I like exploring the site for it's basic functions first.)
