Blast from the past..

1989(ish): the Intel 486 CPU was announced.  Nintendo had just released their original, monochrome-LCD GameBoy handheld.  Black-and-white Macintoshes had been out for a couple years, but the color Apple ][ was still a big seller, and would be around for another 5 years or so.  Version 2.1 of Microsoft Windows was shipping, but was still just a cranky, glacial GUI shell running on top of DOS.  No GFX cards back then.  If you wanted sound from a PC you would have to wait a couple more years for the Soundblaster card to be invented too.  No networks but sneakernet, Fidonet, AOL, or Compuserve.  (The NSF wouldn't allow public use of the Internet until 1991.  Didn't really matter.  The web browser wasn't invented until 1991.  No hard disks or modems either, unless you were wealthy.  A 2400 baud modem was ~$700, and a 10MB hard drive was about $800.. $500 adaptor card extra.)  The Commodore 64 was the most popular home computer.  And Commodore's Amiga's were a thing.. possibly even the Next Big Thing.

Probably you had to be there but these "demos" for the Amiga were simply amazing at the time.  You got a "demo" disc, booted your computer from it - the world hadn't really heard of malware yet - and sat back to wonder at how all of that could come from an 880k floppy running on your system's 7MHz 68000 CPU and 512k of RAM.  There had to be magic involved at some level.

If they stand behind you, give them protection. If they stand beside you, give them respect. If they stand against you, show them no mercy.
