What do you dislike about anime?

Manifesto

Recommended Posts

Some reasons:

- Pandering. The best way to make money from the pillow humper consumer base.

- Writing. Bland poorly developed characters, ass pulls, crappy dialogue, plot holes.

- Art Styles. Giant bug eyes, dot for nose, line for mouth.

- Animation. Them still shots and pans.

- Exposition. Stopping in the middle of a fight to the death to have a conversation about how special abilities work.

- Settings. Is it me or does every anime takes place in high school lol? A lot of anime either take place in either Japan or fantasy land.

- Endings. Nothing is resolved. Open endings. Possible sequel bait but the sequel will never come.

- Community. Can get pretty cancerous. Weaboos are gross.

Let out your frustrations and discuss.

You? what do you dislike about anime?

I honestly don't like the community that much anymore.

I dont really think its cancerous, or filled with weeaboo trash, it's just been changing a lot recently.

Ever since the explosion of popularity anime had, back when SAO and AOT was airing, new comers suddenly crowed popular forums.

I don't really dislike newcomers, but since it was such a huge wave, a lot of stuff was changing in the community.

I'll probably adjust eventually.

Also, I've been realizing that a lot of seasonal anime has been leaning toward the dark, gritty kind of genre. The majority of the shows that entitle that statement are usually extremely edgy, that usually have over the top views on the "true" nature of humanity.

But before the sudden popularity of anime, these kinds genres weren't really touched, since they were hard to execute and didn't sell very well. But when famous and talented directors made shows with dark themes, they were usually pretty good.

Not saying that seasonal anime doesn't have their positive merits, yet I kind of miss all of the stupid shit that was anime. I'm sure there are tons of shows still being released that carry the same feeling as the old style. It might just be imagining it.

I actually gave up on anime for the opposite reasons. Now, I'm not sure about the more recent anime, but when I got tired of anime a few years ago, there were so many moe and cutesy RomCom anime out there filled with fluff and girlish stuff. It's all so sugary and pandering to the stereotypical moe tropes that I just couldn't stand it anymore. Like Manifesto said, big boobs, big eyes, tsunderes, yanderes, kuuderes, weeaderes, otakuderes. Give me another Monster or Mushishi anyday, or Kino's Journey, or Aoi Bungaku. Give me Shiki for all I care. Give me the second season of Aku no Hana. Dark and gritty aren't necessarily always bad. Stop with the oversaturation of shounen and moe.

Anyway, the problems that lie with the anime medium occur in every kind of medium - movies, TV shows, American cartoons. They will always pander to the 'mainstream' audience that repeat the same generic cheap jokes, have a thin storyline that does nothing more than to pass the time, and they don't serve to engage and impress the audience more than they help you 'escape' and procrastinate. Nothing's impressive anymore, but that's not their fault. It's an eventuality that will occur with every form of art in time, as originality will not last forever.

I pretty much don't have a bad feeling about animes except for the long periods of making the next season of any animes. I just hate waiting.

P.S.

After dominating the world I'll be sure to make anime producers and makers to make animes faster. *evil laugh*

Since I'm watching anime just for the fun of it, I rarely get annoyed by it. What I really hate though, is when people start biching about a character being better than someone else and stuff like that. Especially after OPM started airing, me newsfeed on facebook got flooded with Saitama vs Goku posts and people arguing and getting mad so I wanted to burn everyone -_-

I've kinda learned that an excess of fanservice may actually turn me off from a series if it gets really distracting. I may have a perverted side (that I would very much like to be rid of), but there are some things that not even being a pervert will save.

It's why I couldn't really get into Senran Kagura in spite of my efforts; regardless of how well made and how well written it may be, the fanservice actually makes me uncomfortable playing and watching it. Like, I feel less amused and more like I should be getting as far away from it as possible. Certain events merely solidified it, but the discomfort started.

Another thing I dislike, is story arcs taking forever to just end. No seriously, just end already!

This isn't like a myth arc, either. It's when a specific arc seem to take an eternity. Enough to make you worry that it won't end, at least not without taking the show with it in the process.

Funny thing is, cuteness actually attracts me to a series. I'm weird like that.

This, without a doubt. @_@

*cough* No Game No Life. I want my complete ending!!

Impossible to have an ending unless the source is finished or generally because the source is an Adult VN. Creating an anime only ending only serves to screw up future sequels or/but also can cause anger in a fan base. That's why generally, VN -> anime are usually aim for the fans of the titles and to give fanservice to their "waifu" while LN -> Anime serves as a pathway to increase sales of the LN. Waiting for a sequel sucks but its generally better than the anime having an original ending which can cause inconsistency with the original sources.

The only real thing I dislike about quite a number of anime series is just how short and rushed through a lot of them can be, especially more so when it comes to the likes of 12-13 episode ones that you really enjoy and know could be made a lot more out of episode length wise :(

Because animation is expensive. With many shows flopping in Sales, there isn't a justify way to make a show past 12/24. The reason why shows like Pokemon, Yugioh, Gundam, Aikatsu, Gundam and etc can have longer episode counts because they offset their anime sales by merchandise and those anime are generally to push new merchandise. Pokemon for the games and other merchandise, Yugioh for the cards, Gundam for the models and Aikatsu for the "aikatsu cards".

Look at it this way:

The Manabi Line is 2,899. The “Manabi Line” refers to the number of copies sold per volume that equals profitability. Breaking the Manabi Line isn’t necessarily a sure sign of a sequel in the future, but it means the show is probably doing okay financially.

An example, an anime people are saying is an AOTY contender Ore Monogatari has an average sales of 711. Studio's aren't here to bleed money and that's why Sunrise has been successful as a studio, while they release flops, they also have some of the best sellers in the industry for Sunrise they have two of the biggest name in the industry in Love Live and Gundam. Love Live 2nd broke tons of sales record and the Movie sold like hot cakes.

This is why anime forums always watch sales closely of their favorite anime of the season, this is why "Amazon Stalker" is a popular because it basically stalking the anime ranking in the Amazon charts of the current pre-orders of the new season anime.

While I share your sentiments because I did enjoy those long anime series like Slam Dunk, Zoids but there is a logical reasoning behind why studio are using 12/24 ratio. If you want to learn more about the industry, Shirabako is a really good way to see how anime is made and generally how costly it can be, especially for a small studio. Shirobako isn't for everyone though since the anime goes in-details with how the industry works (and in turn some of the episodes is akin to real life where character shows frustration at their job), its an SoL genre so your basically watching the characters live their daily lives as they work for an anime studio.

For on-topic,

I don't have a dislike when it comes to anime, I'm generally open to watch anything and everything. I remember during 2014 when Love Stage was airing, and I recommended it to one of my friends in another forum and while he first hated the idea of watching Shounen-ai, the story was solid and he enjoyed it until the end. That's the reason why I can't be close-minded when I watch anime, I just generally watch everything, and it turn I find hidden gems that people might not consider.

This lifestyle is getting harder and harder being a family man, so I been severely reducing my watch load every season. While it sucks, I can't help but have to decide what shows I have to watch every season now instead of just watching everything.

I feel that the only problem with anime is the community. Like others have said, people think that if they watch anime, they know about Japanese culture. I think that many anime fans think that they'll be living in anime if they travel to Japan. Anime does about as well at representing Japanese culture as cartoons in the United States do at representing the culture of the U.S. :P Thus, you are getting just a tiny little snippet of the culture, not an in-depth lesson on it. People who are legitimately interested in Japanese culture are okay, but those who pretend to have a keen understanding of Japan based solely on watching anime are misguided.

So very true. In anime/manga, for example, junior and senior high students seem to have way more free time than their real-life counterparts.

That they don't last forever. That is one of the only things I don't like...

Since I'm a really picky watcher, when an anime ends I can goes weeks before I find another to watch.

The only thing I don't like about anime are the anime shows that I can"t stand and I'll give examples why. Also I'll give reasons about what are big turn off's to me and yes I have to admit. Some of those reasons are personal reasons. Not as of why everyone should dislike it themselves. The point of my opinion is not to offend anyone. If I have. I apologize.

  • Top number one on my list and I mean this one is a big one. I HATE hentai. A lot of consists of teachers or doctors raping or putting young girls in bondage or they have this fantasy sex trade. I won't even lay my eyes on it. I did however knew a few anime fans back in high school that had anime porn aka hentai and I felt it was very very wrong. The only aura that hentai gives off is to the wrong audience. That for reasons it's almost acknowledging that it's okay to imprison and rape women and from some that I have witnessed in the past is that it also acknowledges sex trade.I mean....Some but not all.

  1. Dragon Ball Z. Reason being that there is too much filler.Random episodes that are boring. The humor is just not funny period. The fighting is over exaggerated. Fights can go on as long as 15 episodes with the characters putting on a light show with their magic powers. They've even painted Goku and Vegeta as if they were immortal gods with omnipotent powers combined with the Dragonballs. It's all wash and repeat.
  2. Cowboy Bebop. Going away from it's enormous fan base. Again with random episodes. Pointless humor. I felt the show had little substance behind it. Not much of a good story behind it. It makes you wonder what the characters are doing long term. Sure, all their goals are money and having shit luck. But all their goals are just short term. There is better anime out there and far more improved than this show.
  3. Trinity Blood. My example as of what I didn't like about it. For a vampire show, it certainly didn't feel like one. I like anime that sticks to the point and sticks to it like super glue. Not get derailed on what the subject matter is. Every vampire in the show was super easy to kill. The show was based on more drama than it was action. All the action goes to the last few episodes. Sure there is a SOME in the episodes but I wouldn't call it a buffet of violence unlike Hellsing.

Canceled seasons and cliffhangers are my biggest pet peeves. They bother me enough to just avoid animes that have been canceled or abandoned all together. I can't really get into manga like I can with anime so the story isn't really concluded to me without it.

I dislike SAO.

i just hate it to my core. The only good thing about it was the plot, whilst everything else was poorly done, and had nothing good to watch. Not only that, but every fight felt the exact same, and let's be honest, the intro was so damn generic it felt like an un-aired kids show.

Allot of people will disagree with me, but SAO is just a waste of viewing time you could use to watch something interesting.

well I dislike the fact that most anime series make God as an evil being. I respect that most japanese don`t believe in God, but they don`t need to push it into the minds of kids. Other than that maybe the excessive blood in some anime series that may be disturbing for kids.

Well I doubt that some kids are watching the really gore-y ones but I do get the hole God thing(I myself am a Christian)

I can't say that I've ever really noticed this as a frequent thing myself. :o

I've seen plenty of anime that have taken tremendous liberty with portraying Christian imagery and the like, though I see it as not being too different from how Eastern religions have often been portrayed here in the West - people simply borrowing clumsily from cultures that they aren't personally terribly familiar with. I don't think, however, that I've seen many shows that portray God as being evil or malevolent - in fact I'd say that in general, I think most anime tend to be fairly secular in nature.

The only show that comes to mind in which core tenants of the Christian faith are portrayed as evil or malevolent is Drifters, to be honest... though, I suppose I could name a few that cast the Catholic Church (the organization, rather than the faith) as being morally questionable. Not sure if that's what y'all mean?
