The Perfection of PC-98

What is PC-98?

The PC-9800 series, commonly shortened to PC-98 or simply 98 (キューハチ, Kyū-hachi), is a lineup of Japanese 16-bit and 32-bit personal computers manufactured by NEC from 1982 to 2003. While based on standard x86-16 and x86-32 processors, it uses an in-house architecture making it incompatible with IBM clones; some PC-98 computers used NEC's own V30 processor. The platform established NEC's dominance in the Japanese personal computer market, and, by 1999, more than 18 million units had been sold. While NEC did not market these specific machines in the West, it sold the NEC APC series, which had similar hardware to early PC-98 models.

Why is it important?

Now that we've passed the boring introduction, I can finally share my excitement about this ancient computer, which was released 43 years ago (3 years earlier than the release of Super Mario Bros on the NES).

  • Do you like older anime art styles?
  • Do you feel nostalgic when listening to 16-Bit era music?
  • Do you love reading and playing visual novels?
  • Are you a bit of a pervert?

If you answered yes to one of them then you'll also like learning more about this; PC-98 games have some of the most beautiful anime art I've ever seen. Let me show you some screenshots to prove it.

You probably get the idea by now and these are just the tip of the iceberg.

Now, there's some good and some bad news for you. Remember the last question I asked in that list earlier?

The bad news is that many games are eroge (adult games). Which means that you will witness the most vile, horrendous things you'll ever see when playing them. BE WARNED!

Oh, yeah. The good news is that some of these have like, really good stories. And thanks to a small community, they're receiving fan translations.

My recommendations for a beginner would be:

All of these games below have some ecchi elements in them.

Policenauts (Adventure)

Dead of The Brain 1 and 2 (Horror)

The Farland Story Series (Strategy)

Rusty (Castlevania-like)

Nocturnal Illusion (Visual Novel - Very NSFW)

Thank you Mr Garden. You truly have an acquired taste. Dude I usually liked the 90s games for the pcs like heretic and ofc Doom. I thought the mapping and fps gameplay was revolutionary. When I first tried to teach my self programming (I got frustrated and gave up.) I was trying to make a text based rpg only to realize that lowkey gui is very important and I do not have the time to cultivate this skill yet. I love the maximization of low power retro tech. The fact we had soldered RAM which usually went only up to 512mb. It baffles me because during that time we had games where you could play a lot. It goes to show how much horrid Windows bloatware is pissing me off. Time to switch to Linux (definitely on my next pc build). I think “low” pcs are a marvel of technology. Being resourceful and taking tech back to the hands of the people and not corporations.

To add on the “play alot” I meant the capabilities of those computers are not short of what you can do today. They had video editing, emailing and so much more. Stuff that now takes like 8x the amount of ram ability. It’s almost as if to go forward tech is de evolving.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean! The perfect efficiency the developers had when they were literally creating new worlds inside these very limited machines. Windows bloatware is real and painful too. I made the choice last year and after using Windows for over a decade I finally switched to Linux Mint. I am not going to lie, I had a problem or two which I needed to search on the internet for solutions. Thankfully, after extensive searches I've found the solutions I'd been looking for. And now, the freedom has never felt this fresh before. Imagine this, the search bar actually works on Linux Mint and does not open a Bing page. I don't have to worry about telemetry and other tracking spyware. Crazy, I know.

I was wondering what Distro to get ngl, ik all the popular ones. I plan to move out and build my next pc all i need is a cpu and a mobo, everything else i already have. It’s gonna be very cheap. It’s a xfx rx580 refurbished gpu., 16gb ram, 550w psu. Everything else im probably gonna thrift other than cpu n mother board prolly a b450m or something and a ryzen x 3600. All the laptops i repaired for fun are running AntiX 32x Linux. It’s Debian based “anti facist” Distro which is funny cause idk how a OS can be antifa. But fairs it just runs smooth and has a decent de. So just waiting to move out to start the next build. My friend started playing around w arch, of course I gotta make fun of him. But genuinely thinking about the self harm that might befall me when I try to attempt arch.

To add on, realistically OPSec is kind of a false sense of security. A lot of people have a nhilistic outlook on the modern day of technical privacy. Government can and will backdoor u through ur hardware. They are given the right to by these companies.

So though you can technically mitigate spyware and whatnot it’s never really gone. Unless you Libre boot your pc. And flash a whole new bios into that system. Which probably still will allow the govt to back door you.

Lool, well I'm not an expert at choosing distros but I guess I can say a thing or two.

First of all, except Arch, the distro choice does not that matter in the internal part. You are basically choosing your GUI for your computer.

Linux Mint has one of the most active communities. So when you have a problem, and believe me you will, you can search for solutions easily. It's a very lightweight distro too, but your machine can easily handle it. Linux Mint only uses 2-4GB of RAM for comparison.

Zorin OS is another popular choice as it is very similar looking to Windows 11. The transition to Linux will be the easiest.

Bazzite OS is the distro for gamers.

Endeavour OS is another distro with new features, new customization options and so on.

Then there are classics like Ubuntu and Arch Linux.

I mean you probably already know all of this. But if you want stability, go with Mint or Zorin. If you are a gamer, Bazzite looks like the best choice. If you want to be adventurous, then Arch Linux is the choice. 😅

I’m probably gonna do Mint, but arch is speaking to me. But I don’t want to become a stereotype of an insufferable arch user.
I think each distro does matter. A lot of distro’s are made with a philosophy in mind. I believe if you can be intentional in what you do you should be intentional. Becoming a representative of your belief through your actions.

I think so too. Distros follow a very specific philosophy so go with what your heart desires!
