Celestia
Spoilers ahead? Throughout the manga, we perceive the world as Seichi sees it, and I love how just everything about Oshimi's artwork ties neatly together to create the perfect reflection of Seichi's psyche as it interacts with the external world. From the very moment that his mother pushes the cousin off the cliff, his world drastically shifts. The distorted imagery, the closeups, the facial expressions, the shading and oh my! the symbolism! absolutely everything creates the necessary atmosphere to reflect just how terrifying the experience is, for a child, let alone an adult. As I read through a good part of this manga, concepts such as manipulation, gaslighting, or BPD take a backseat. To a child like Seiichi, these concepts are not yet defined; his world is limited to experiencing pure terror. We are caved into the raw, visceral and immediate reactions of a helpless child. Oshimi really does do a great job at that, It makes me want to scream thank you thank you for being so good at that. However, when Seiichi reunites with his mother, it feels like these concepts resurface for exploration in my mind. Although Seiichi still harbors hatred towards his mum and remains connected to his trauma, he is now navigating the world and his relationship with her as an adult. Oshimi reflects this transformation well in his story- Seiichi now sees his mother as someone who is too unstable to maintain a job and too old to care for herself. He is also able to hear her side of the story. Whilst I enjoyed the art, I can’t say that was all too taken by the plot. I understand that this a character-driven manga, and I certainly enjoyed picking out little details and lavishing in them. But at some point, my mind just… got bored. I simply didn’t care. I don’t understand what the entertainment factor is here. The character development? What is so profound about it? I find myself annoyed that there wasn’t a better plot to accompany the art. However, one of my beliefs in life is that every moment in life would not have been experienced the same if even just one minute thing would’ve been different, even if that difference is something I cannot put my finger on. In the same breath, I believe there is something I experienced from this manga that I could not have experienced if it was plot driven. Any opinions? Nonetheless, a very subjective: 6/
