Anime should've remained niche

As much as i hate using the word tourist or newbie to describe new people who are into anime, i can't help but be bewildered by some of the  stupid shit people say. Recently i was having this friendly discourse with a guy who recently got into anime, we were discussing no game no life the anime and it's themes and why it never got a season 2 and this fucking guy said "Sora is an asshole pervert main character who has no motivations and goals and the only good character the entire anime has is Stephanie Dola cause she has a goal and a character arc" and i was like that is the dumbest shit I've ever heard and mind you i do have a lot of problems with no game no life and fan service in anime in general but my brother in christ you are literally watching an ecchi anime with a harem of girls, you are not going to find Lelouch level character writing

Man also goes on to compare the starting 10 minutes of the anime with code geass's chess opening about establishing character motivations and personalities, all in all i just called him an absolute fucking idiot and left the topic there

Saying that Sora is a pervert is hard to argue against—the series itself plays that up for comedy and fan service. Saying he's an "asshole" is more subjective, but he is often manipulative, arrogant, and dismissive of others. Whether those traits make him a bad character is a different discussion.
