The Hovercraft Museum

The hovercraft museum is on the seafront at Lee-on-the-Solent and is situated in one of the iconic Type J hangars within “Seaplane Square”, an important part of the former HMS Daedalus Royal Naval air base. The Type J hangers are all Grade II listed buildings and provided essential storage and maintenance facilities for seaplanes in the early 20th century and also played an important role in the development of hovercraft which were invented by British engineer Christopher Cockerell in the 1950s and developed by Saunders Roe. The SR.N designation stands for Saunders Roe Nautical.

It is the world's only hovercraft museum. It has a collection of over 50 hovercraft of varying types and sizes.

The collection includes both military and civilian hovercraft. Among the hovercraft on display are two of the craft from the 2002 James Bond film "Die Another Day"

Sizes range from small one man hovercraft to the mighty SR.N4 "The Princess Anne" the worlds largest civilian car carrying hovercraft which could carry 427 passengers and 60 cars in its cavernous car deck. SR.N4 hovercraft operated between Dover and Calais for 30 years. The service eventually ceased because not only was such a huge craft expensive to maintain and operate but also the opening of the channel tunnel meant they lost their competitive edge on journey times across the channel. Only one of these magnificent machines survives and sadly it is no longer operational.

Sometimes when I'm looking round a museum I come across an exhibit which has a notice on it saying that it was used in some film or TV show and it is sort of cool to see the actual vehicle they used even if I've never seen or heard of the film or TV show.

I've never seen a hovercraft in person and I didn't even know they made them this big 😮 I thought all of them were smaller for 1 or 2 people. This is really interesting to learn. Do they not have any that guest can ride? Or they are all not operational anymore?

@Zeref, @Sakura While I knew OF the SR.N4 and had seen film of them in service I'd never actually seen one until I visited the museum and I was totally blown away by how huge they were. I spend aged just wandering round it inside and outside and thinking that this huge machine could actually fly across the channel.  I don't think that the museum actually offers hovercraft rides, but I seem to recall from my visit that there was a hovercraft operating from the slipway opposite the museum that give rides but they weren't operating the day I was there.

I have had a ride in a hovercraft, way way back when I was about 10 one of the seaside places we visited on holiday was doing rides round the harbour.

I'm going to join the I-didn't-know-they-were-this-big group because I had no idea either. That's something fascinating to learn because I never would have guessed they'd built some capable of holding 400 plus passengers :o

The first one doesn't look as if it'd be very big, but when you see it from the front and inside it's much wider than I'd guess judging from the side view. I would never have thought one would be capable of holding 60 cars either. That's impressive.

The SR.N4 doesn't look that large from a distance, but when I stood in front of it and walked up the car ramp and stood in the car deck I was totally blown away at just how massive it was, I stood on the car deck for quite a while taking in just how big it was.

I was too just looking at your pics honestly ~ I really thought like Pessi, that they held 1-2 people or sumin and just kinda acted maybe like a small motor boat lol but I've never ridden in one that sounds like it would be fun ._.
