  1. Hi everyone, The forum will be undergoing a major core update which will result in some downtime whilst the update is applied. The updates will include some UI improvements as well as significantly improved performance with the themes, particularly for mobile users. Also please note, we are suspending the Member Shop and Trophies/Medals features due to lack of developer support. We are looking at bringing these back in a new form sometime in the near future. Thank you for your ongoing support.

  2. On top of the world! Though, I would love to dedicate that feeling and this post to @XII360 for inspiring me to take the necessary time out for myself. To nurture my dreams and aspirations in the arts. When I was in college one of my instructors had told us that we would have to sacrifice a bit of freedom to accomplish demanding goals. It was more than evident at the time but you always end up thinking you can maintain a certain momentum in your life. Without realizing how easy and how common it is to be blindsided by extra responsibilities that come along the way. The last few years I had turned passions into hobbies in order to prioritize more important things. It was a strange place to be, living on autopilot. Exhausting! I couldn't finish projects because something was usually demanding my attention. I didn't protest. There were always more important things to attend to. The pattern to be helpful and reliable to those you love; often of authenticity and sometimes plain old exploitation. Lately I've been wielding the power of "no". Despite it hurting. Some of the people I gave a good amount of time to seemed confused, which broke my heart. There was little room of understanding and appreciation to be found. Subtle manipulation to make me think that I was being the worst kind of person. It left me with a lot of doubt. Sooo, I chilled with my favorite musical and thought to myself, what would Lin-Manuel Miranda do? I recalled one of his sessions with art students that was about the importance of forgoing moments in our lives for our own success and health. Then I came across this gem a few months ago: It helped me check back in on where I left off at my local art school some years ago. Though done differently, thanks to Covid-19. They sent me a registration form for the classes I still needed to finish and that sat within my e-mail for three days. At this point, I was biting my nails because I'm a caretaker now. Realistically speaking, was art even still something I should be emphasizing on right now? I missed it. Terribly. Seeking advice, there were countless others whispering in my ear about how much of a privilege it would be to have the choice. The guilt swelled up. Was I being selfish? It didn't feel like a privilege. Carefully maintaining career, family and a close social circle. The stress, the hours put in. Was having a goal to experience one of my greatest loves in life to the unknown extent of my abilities, selfish? Chatting with XII360 was a huge game-changer. If you ever end up reading this, I was inspired by your aptitude to maintain balance in work, interests and your creative passions. You're a workaholic because it means something to you. Something I lost in order to accommodate people and situations and my role between it all. Just finished my first week in school. I had the courage to participate in a modest section of the Music and Arts competition we had. For me, it was more about learning from other participants and what I could take away from the experience but I ended up making second place out of forty-nine. To have my piece displayed on a large stage projector with a live orchestra competing in the music section, was insane. I still think that it's a mistake that they're being too kind about fixing. Here's a sample of half of the painting I did. The whole piece and somewhat the making of, is on my YouTube channel if anyone is interested. I have yet to share my channel with anyone else, much less be active on it. Please excuse the emptiness you might find there. I also won two tickets to a Van Gogh exhibit in NY. Huge thank you to XII360 for the extra push into all of this madness. You never know who you're going to be inspired by or inspire. I would not have made the decision to chase the meaning in my interests, if you were not a contributing factor. I'm feeling motivated on where I'm at right now but more than anything, at peace with my doubts. As we all end up inevitably facing when they come. Thanks for the growth AF.

  3. I have acquired a kitten. She's super sweet and she runs on a V8 or higher for sure. Feels like forever since I've had a cat who isn't a dickhead.

  4. Wonderful that you're taking care of your mother. I do the same for mine. She was involved in a bad car accident and almost paralyzed. It can be a challenge at times for sure. Gosh, it's got to be really difficult saying goodbye to a parent. My father is getting sick from years of smoking. I didn't know him too well, so I feel like time is taking something precious away. Sorry about your lab! I love every pet I have and it's the worst saying goodbye to a friend. They really do make you smile in ways only they can.

  5. So I know that we are in a pandemic and all, so meet ups and con's are pretty much off the table for a while yet. But I wonder if there are any of you on here, like myself, who live in really rural areas and have limited access to the anime/manga community outside of online? Growing up I had no idea that anime or manga even existed. Growing up in a pretty conservative house I had only brief glimpses of such things through mediums like Pokémon and my friend's interests, but even these influences were limited by my parents. When I was in probably the 5th or 6th grade was my first real introduction to anime through some fellow classmates, mostly because they wanted me to understand why it was so cool. Soon after I began spotting Japanese styled books and shows everywhere and became pretty obsessed with the language and culture as well. I even started a club with my school mates (though honestly there were only like 4 of us and all we did was meet at my house to watch shows and eat snacks). But soon enough that small group disintegrated, either by moving away or the slow ebb of communication once I went off to high school. In high school I went to a coed academy in the middle of nowhere (very generous private sponsors my whole life), filled with lots of young people my age from my church denomination. Strangely enough there were quite a few like myself who enjoyed the medium! To the boys dorm I became the download queen (Our school rules prohibiting private movies and dvds for our laptops), they would come to me for absolutely any and all anime, because unlike the other girls in my dorm I liked ALL anime and manga, not limiting myself to genera. Several of us made far off distant plans to travel to cons and experience the American world of anime, others (including myself) wanted to travel to Japan someday (though by this time my interests were not solely weeb and I had actual interest in the country itself). But time went by and people moved on. I graduated and went to China for 2 years (again sponsors), and while there never really lost my love for Japan. After two years I returned to my small hometown in the middle of the US. and here I have remained for about 6 years now? But unlike the rest of my story I have been pretty alone in my interests up to this point. There are a few fellow weebs where I live, but I am not particularly close to them. My closest book/entertainment store is severely limited in both the anime and manga sections, with prices being jacked through the roof for conveniences sake. So now at 25, with two years of Uni down and another two to go, my single and alone ass is out here looking for other people like myself just to have a conversation with about our mutual interests. I am also wondering where all the guys from my church who liked anime and manga went... did yall fall off the face of the planet? Yall need to come back because ya girl never left. But seriously though, I'm not alone in this problem right? At least the rural living, with limited access and few if any friends who share this interest?

  6. Hello everyone, new members and old! We'd like to take this opportunity to re-introduce our staff to you. For some of us, it's been far too long since we've joined the forum, and our introduction posts have since become an ancient relic; for others it's been a short time, but still, intros fall to the wayside and are forgotten once you've been around the forum for a while. Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are your staff, and we're here for you. So without further ado, I'm Seshi, your friendly AF Community Manager. It's my job to host Events for our community, and to make AF a fun place to be. I enjoy being a part of this forum community because of its unique character. We have a thoughtful group of members in our community who take time to share their knowledge and experience in their anime ventures with us, making this a great place for new anime fans, or hyped returning fans. Us longtime anime fans enjoy ourselves here too, and I'm happy to be a part of that. As your community manager, I just want to say welcome. And if you have any ideas for helping the community have some fun, please feel free to bring them up to me, I'm always on the look out for some new event ideas, and am quite a good listener I promise.

  7. Anime Database Request This thread is where you can request anime to be added to the AF Anime Database! Prior to now, the general public was allowed to add anime, however this was rather messy when it comes to duplicate posts and general quality control! As such, after checking the database first, you may simply request to have an anime added via this thread, and an Anime Curator will get to it!

  8. A friend of mine told me he joined this place, and he suggested I come here again, so here I am. It's been a number of years, really; some of you may recognize me, and some of you may have completely forgotten who I am. To those who remember, you may have noticed I don't have my Amitie avi anymore; I still love her, but I decided to use my OC as an avi instead. Her name is Amelia. To all new members who joined since I disappeared, I hope we get along! To those who remember me and haven't seen me in a while, I hope things are going well for you.

  9. Hey RZ, Unfortunately MAL is separate from AF and there isn't anything we can do here to help you, although I do understand your predicament. Perhaps all you can do is attempt to get ahold of a staff member over there. If they have a discord it may get you quicker results to ask through their server. Best of luck.

  12. heyo~ welcome to af-forums is first of all~ but yea, if they are very close friends of yours, even through the interwebs, you should still stay in contact, you dont need to meet and greet and all that, just being in contact is better especially with covid, philippines is not a fun place to visit right now, you will just be quarantined for 14days, with sh*tton of delays on being catered to, its really not a great idea to visit philippines --- or any other country at that fact right now i haven't met with my classmate who i treat as a BFF, but we still keep in touch on facebook, its mainly talk about gacha games though, and some random topics about what's happening with my life right now, with job and all, flexes and stuff yea, getting on your hobby will be more fun, but dont forget to talk to people too, locally finding friends is really hard, especially if you're a introvert like me currently on my work, no one shares the same hobbies as me (drawing, playing games, animes), but that doesn't bother me that much, we don't have to share the same taste to be friends, though it helps ease tension and make conversations if they know of the stuff i commonly know of >.<) so yea, tldr; yea, forget about philippines for now, and focus on your own life rather than others this is coming from someone who lives in Ph by the by ~.~

  13. actually, technically, a good while longer, since i vaguely recall sitting through an episode of ROBOTECH as a very young boy around what must have been sometime in 1986 or so. a nephew gave me his old 1985 REVELL ROBOTECH CHANGERS VEXAR transformable model (U.S. market reboxing of 1983 IMAI MACROSS VF-1S Focker 1/72 VARIABLE TYPE) around 1988/1989 or so, and then i got a taste of Mecha Anime tropes at a more readily-impressionable age around 1991, thanks to the Mecha action-platfomer game "ASSAULT SUIT LEYNOS" (TARGET EARTH in the U.S.) on the SEGA GENESIS games console. my Anime fandom truly began to consciously coalesce around 1995, when my dad bought me an old IMAI MACROSS 1/100 VF-1J Ichijo GERWALK mode model kit, and PLAYMATES toy company reissued the old original MATCHBOX-made ROBOTECH Mecha toys under their "EXO-SQUAD" line. around that time, i discovered SUNCOAST VIDEO at the mall, and their Anime selection. first i concentrated on ROBOTECH, -via the dual-episode FHE VHS cassette volumes- found VIZ MEDIA's ANIMERICA Anime magazine, and began picking up issues often as i could, and then i discovered MANGA VIDEO's MACROSS II and MACROSS PLUS movie compilation releases, Pure, uncut MACROSS, for the first time. from there, i began to branch out from Mecha-themed anime, with series such as Galaxy Fraulein Yuna and Tenchi Muyo! and then the early-21st-century and the DVD Anime boom hit, and i was well and truly off to the Anime Races. i'm about as hardcore today as i've ever been, and, thanks to the internet, i now have the kind of Mecha and Character-themed merchandise that i would have killed for as a young teen, two-plus decades ago...

  14. i grow up in my auntie's household. had cousins treating me like their big sister. and with my furry babies, lovely cats. but just last 5 years, i finally got to be with my Mom. we were apart. she was working at the capital region. only gone home once a year because don't have my father anymore. She has decent job of course, until now at pandemic times. So, even though I've never experienced having a complete fam, got good natured ppl around me.

  21. So I've been doing some remastering using AI algorithms on an old anime, hajime no ippo, a boxing anime and have just finished it. The type of remastering I did was to enhance the resolution, clean up artifacts/noise, and frame interpolation. I've made my own subreddit, in there I've got more info, as well as some FAQs. Check it out! https://www.reddit.com/r/InterpolateAndEnhance/ For now I'll be doing anime, the next series will be the old hunter x hunter. At some point I want to try out live action content, specifically action stuff like martial arts movies, or straight up action, but for now the interpolation algorithms aren't quite good enough, or well actually they kinda are, at least the high end ones, but good luck trying to interpolate anything with those on anything other than a RTX 3090.

  22. I think the decline in activity is due to new anime fans who search a place to share their thoughts are often recommended to go either discord or reddit by major "influencers" from other media like youtube and twitch. Which means publicity wins. I particularly don't have the knowledge to resolve this problem, so I'm sorry for not being helpful. The reason I came here was running away from the toxicity often found in places like discord and reddit (not every place is bad, but the bigger ones very often are).

  26. I’m sure that part of any falloff in forum activity is likely related to all the wackiness of 2020. I know I’m far busier this year than last. I don’t have nearly as much time for things like games, anime, or online forums. I’m sure it is the same for a lot of other people. Also all the cons that tend to generate buzz have been cancelled or postponed, as have a number of animes themselves. Games, movies, lots of other stuff as well. Less stuff to talk about overall. For me specifically I also don’t see the types of anime that I like. I’m into “hard” science fiction like Planetes or Ghost in the Shell, and I’m just not seeing those sorts of stories lately. As a consequence I’m not posting a lot, or if I’m posting it is in a non-anime topic. I’ve posted in gaming, computers, and the astronomy club in this site for instance. Just my anime-related chat in the other topics is likely down. As for Discord, I don’t mind it. I use it a lot in fact, mostly for games with friends as a game coordination tool. It is great for scheduling/organizing things for an online game session with a bunch of friends. Then during the game itself I use it as a communications tool, a-la team speak or similar. The issue I have with discord as a replacement for forums (message boards) is that discord is dialed more towards that realtime interaction. The attraction of forums for me is that I can drop in on my schedule. I sometimes work nights and odd hours but no matter when a moment opens in my schedule I can browse the messages, respond, post my stuff, and move on. To be sure you can do it that way with something like discord as well, but discord is more about the real-time chat thing. Whenever I try to use discord as a forum I get sucked in and wind up spending way too much time chatting, or scrolling through pages and pages of off-topic chat from other people. As a consequence I avoid logging in /unless/ I want and have time to chat. (Which I rarely ever do.) I don’t use it as an information source/sink like I do with a well-moderated discussion forum. The other thing I’ve noticed about discord is that in discord I tend to interact more with people who are geographically near me. I think it is because most people only have time for the real-time thing during certain parts of their workday so I wind up chatting mostly with people on the same schedule. In a forum the posters’ time zone is less of a determinant of chat partner so I tend to interact more with people in other time zones and countries. To me that’s a cool thing, so that would be another reason I might avoid discord as a forum replacement.

  27. I'm kinda proud of this one. One of my friends commissioned me to make this character for him. I wasn't sure about doing commission work since I only JUST got back into drawing after at least 5 years of not doing it seriously. But yeah hope y'all like it. It was inspired by the Jack Frosts from the Persona games and Craig Tucker from South Park.

  31. I don’t exactly hide it but if it doesn’t come up then I don’t go out of my way to turn the topic in that direction either. Same with books, space, programming, computer hardware, games, etc. Besides which I’m not a big conversationalist in the first place. If someone asks me directly about some topic that I’m interested in then they’d better be prepared for an earful, but otherwise my side of the conversation usually consists mostly of monosyllables.

  35. I know what you mean! AoT really got me in the feels, especially because of Eren. Can't believe we have to wait a bit for part two of S4. The waiting is taking me on a ride and I'm kiiind of crossing my fingers that the conclusion will be a little different from the manga. For sure! Most recently it was Violet Evergarden and Wolf Children. I was a mess for a good few minutes. Lots of thought provoking anime too but Berserk will always be my number 1. I just want Guts and Casca to have a happy ending.

  36. This. Armin was always the idealistic one, while Mikasa’s motivation has always been her loyalty to Eren. Eren however has always been driven by his rage over what he perceives as being unjust or unfair. While this may at first seem as something noble, it’s based on his own moral code. After watching the 2 most recent episodes Actually the whole point of this season seems to be how war causes people to act in monstrous ways & the cycle repeats over and over as they & their descendants succumb to fear & resentment.

  37. If you've been on twitter today, (2/15/2021 for those that find this thread after today) you might have seen gatekeeping trending because a guy who is known for his gatekeeping tweets, and keeping company that also gatekeeps got so much attention, that even Funimation put out a tweet about it. While the guy in question was pretty much just being ratio'd, which is normal for his tweets, though never to this extent, I thought now would be a good a time as any to talk about it on here. It's never really come up that I've seen, and while I rarely post here, I do read the forums, and have never seen anyone that was taken seriously, try to gatekeep any particular show or anime in general, as it wouldn't make much sense to do that on an anime forum. I wanted to know what people's general thoughts were on gatekeeping, and if you've experienced any kind of gatekeeping, espeically based on gender in the past. I know for myself, I tend to have people do that when I say I'm a little tired of subbed anime since so many lines are stereotypes in anime, and because VA work in Japan often has similar voices, hearing those same lines said the same way, by the same sounding voice in the hundreds of anime I've watched over the years, has caused me to feel like all those elements combined cause a character to lose a sense of identity. I could go into it further in a separate thread if anyone wants to see that, but for now, I present a topic that could make for an interesting conversation. Here's the tweet in question, if anyone wants to see it.

  41. For an obscure one from the past, there’s Cybersix, which was based on a Argentine comicbook, animated in Japan and directed/produced in Canada One of the things that stood out from other “cartoons” was the title character’s superhero persona was female but posed as a male school teacher as her alter ego. Believe it or not it actually aired on Fox Kids
