Congrats on surviving the encounter.    

I'm a bit of a non-talker myself.  I can sit quietly all day and just think.  In conversations I often take a while to respond because I think about .. everything before I start speaking.  It takes a certain amount of patience to deal with me conversationally.  I also tend to let people who want to talk talk until they're done talking.  When dealing with new people I tend to ask basic questions to build up a picture of someone before I start on the real conversation.

That said, once I know someone and especially on topics I'm interested in it is sometimes hard to get me to stop talking.   

I know nothing about this person so I'm not saying that's what's going on here.  Just maybe an angle or two to consider.

I understand where he is coming from. I'm really not good at talking to people, I can sit for ages trying to think of something to say and hoping the other person will say something I can comment on. This happens in both 1-1 meetings and group gatherings. Once I've got to know the person/people a bit I don't have so much trouble talking to them, so hopefully this is what will happen with you two soon.
