  1. Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (bka Ronin Warriors outside of Japan). Honestly, I don't know why I favor it so much. I like the story and I like the characters as well as the style, which doesn't exist anymore. Is the show flawed? Definitely. Could it have been adapted better? Of course. But yeah, I still like it.

Maybe I really like it because of the real world equivalents associated with the armors.

  2. Okay, a Mario one just sounds awful lmao
Well, the fact that it's still being published after 26 years must mean that it's appealing to someone. lol

It starts off with Super Mario World.

It's too crude for me to enjoy. The name of the series is called, "Super Mario-kun."

  3. That's quite a long and detailed answer! Thanks for responding in such depth. c:

Oh I see, so as long as I don't mention my disability, nobody will ever question me about it. =w= I just have to do my best to act natural as though I don't have a disability, heh... Well, if I were to talk to a doctor, certainly they could refer me to someone who deals with people who struggle this way, right? owo; I would hope so anyway... Ah, as for medications, I do take a few. But I brought them to Japan on my last trip and there were no issues. I have heard some horror stories about foreigners bringing certain medications to Japan and being arrested, but I think I'm good with mine, I looked them up before my last trip and there didn't seem to be any rules saying they weren't allowed in Japan...

I was actually looking into my current city's university, which has a program where I could study abroad in Japan for 3 months to a year. They have a selection of partner universities in Japan that I could transfer to for that time. The university that interested me the most was Sophie University in Tokyo. o:

Oh of course there's more to Japan than Tokyo! :D It's just that Tokyo was my favourite part of it both times I visited. I can't say I visited anything rural in Japan, though. Probably the most rural I visited was Atami, heh. ^^; In any case, I tend to prefer big cities over small communities for some reason. I'm really socially awkward in real life, and I don't get along with people easily, so I prefer to be in a place where everyone is busy and not paying attention to me, rather than a small community where people will probably want to get to know me... If I have to talk to someone, I'd rather it be once or twice than to make it a habit. >w<;; Weird, yes, but well, that's me.

Oh, but I would definitely be up to visiting beautiful rural places in Japan. I just probably wouldn't want to live there, given my awkward personality. >w<

Sorry I couldn't answer this more properly. I'm using my tablet. I seldom use my computer these days. I used my work computer yesterday. ^^

So yeah, if you don't openly talk about it, then no one will know about it. As for doctors, I would definitely research that prior to coming over. Look into places that would cater to your needs that also has English-speaking staff. I would also bring a translation of your medical records. I guess in this case, living in a big city would be more beneficial since you have a condition that may be difficult to explain in Japanese and you would be able to blend in more compared to the inaka where you'd stand out like a sore thumb. lol .

As for medication, I'm not sure if there's a limitation as to how much you can bring in. I recall it being a month or something like that but that may be the case for travelers, not residents, but I would check with the closest Japanese embassy to you.. Anyway, I only mentioned it since seemingly you'd run out eventually. I know years ago seems people were having trouble regarding birth control meds and being limited on how much they could bring.

That aside, hopefully you'll be able to do a transfer from the university you're looking into. I think be here as a student would be more fun without having to worry about work responsibilities. Good luck on getting in when the time comes. ^_^

  4. I guess what I'm most curious about are things like, is a Japanese lifestyle really as overwhelming as people say? Will people belittle me based on my hobbies/interests (anime etc)?

    Also, I have some mental disabilities. I've heard that Japanese people are generally not very understanding about this sort of thing. I don't want to say exactly what my problems are, but I do have a mild developmental disorder. I'm usually terrified of what people will think about me if they find out even in my country, yet at the same time I feel like people can see right through me and that they know what's wrong with me. It's mostly a personal confidence problem, but I'm so scared that if an issue came up regarding it in Japan, I might just sink away and become a shut-in. =w=;;

Maybe I'll be a homeless shut-in on the streets of Akiba, LOL. AKB48 Cafe, save me. Give me shelter.

Okay, I think I can answer some of these. As for living in Japan being overwhelming is definitely a case by case situation as it truly depends on the individual in question. I wasn’t too overwhelmed my first time living here. I also doubt people would belittle you or get on you just for your hobbies…not Japanese people, anyway. They probably wouldn’t care because you are a foreigner. If anything, other foreigners may be critical or whatever…but for the most part, I highly doubt you’ll be bothered for this, especially since people here like anime and manga and J-dramas and Japanese history, etc. Both foreigners and Japanese have some of the same hobbies as you, I’m sure.

As for the mental disability thing, I also wouldn’t worry about that as far as Japanese people are concerned…other foreigners too for that matter. Here, people just don’t talk about it openly, seemingly, unlike say, the US where it isn’t much of a taboo. Unless you openly discuss it, no one will know about it. The only concern I would have in your situation is treatment and if you’ll be able to continue any treatment you may be receiving for your condition once in the country.

As for what you were saying earlier, I think the best bet would be to come over as a student. There are places like Waseda University you could look into. Anyway, at least as a student, you’ll be able to get a place to stay, I would assume, as the only way to live in this country, you have to be a student, working, or married to someone with a proper visa as a dependent, or married to a Japanese citizen. Other than those particular things, you can only visit.

Oh, and might I recommend not living in Tokyo? There’s more to this country than just Tokyo. IMO, to understand the “true Japan”, you need to get away from the city and try going for the more rural areas. Places like Tokyo does have more conveniences, but the Japanese countryside is always nice and relaxing.

  6. I remember this, but will rewatch it later. It's been years.

What I can't seem to get over when I watch anime, and this seems to happen more often in the Japanese versions, is female voice actors. Female anime characters are always voiced in a very "breathless" way. They sound like they are whining, moaning, and gasping for air. High pitched. I don't know why this is but I just can't stand it.
For me personally, I'd rather put up with an animated character sounding this way, than encountering adult women in real life putting on that kind of voice since it's supposed to be cute. *coughs*maidcafes*coughs*

  7. What is it like to live in Japan?

I've visited twice, but never lived there. I feel like I want to live there, but since I have never tried, I'm not 100% sure. I am thinking about studying abroad in Tokyo for a short time to get a feel of what it's like. It will be very expensive, though...

Anything specifically you want to know about that hasn't been answered yet in this thread?
  8. well I dislike the fact that most anime series make God as an evil being. I respect that most japanese don`t believe in God, but they don`t need to push it into the minds of kids. Other than that maybe the excessive blood in some anime series that may be disturbing for kids.
The main religion here is a mix of Buddhism and Shintoism. There are beliefs in multiple gods, some good, some bad. You can't have good without bad. That's the balance. For whatever series you've watched where a God was portrayed as evil, did you look into why that was? What's the origin of said god? Is the God in question based on a real world spiritual Japanese equivalent? Japanese do believe in gods. Dang, they say that all of the emperors are descendants of gods...well maybe it's not said as much because of Japan's WWII loss, but um yeah.

  9. This is all I can truly come up with, and for the most part, it hasn't changed much over the years. Generally, I have favorite characters and non-favorite characters. It's rare for me to outright dislike or hate an actual character. It's mostly certain characteristics I may dislike, not the actual character. Anyway, this is as close as I can get, so let’s get started, and since I listed more than one, with reasons, I'll use the spoiler tag.

The entire cast of Kanon, minus Mai and Sayuri, Kitagawa (the blonde haired boy), and Kaori along with her sickly sister, whose name I can't recall atm. (I've never seen the 2006 version so I don't know if the characters I found annoying would still have been annoying for it).

    ****

Miki from Marmalade Boy I found a bit irritating in some ways. Her insecurity issues were very bothersome. Miki's constant worrying over Yuu's finding someone else was highly annoying. Now, for the manga, I didn't have any problem with her character. I prefer her manga counterpart to her anime one. She kept making drama that wasn't there.

    ****

Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi came across as selfish to me where Tamahome was concerned. It's like if all of her comrades were hanging on for dear life over a cliff in a car filled with dynamite while over a pit of poisonous snakes and a vat of acid, and Tamahome was sitting under a tree, and gave off a cough, I'd see her running to his aid before the others. If the anime didn't mean for her to come across this way, then they did a terrible job in doing so since she definitely did come across this way, imo.

    ****

Kikyo from Inuyasha I found bothersome for her vengeful nature. I understand why she had hatred towards Inuyasha, so in the beginning, I didn't have much of a problem with her character, but later on, even after finding out that Inuyasha didn't betray her, she still seemed to have ill feelings towards him and those feelings weren't warranted. I don't know if this changed over the course of the series since I did stop watching as I'd finally grown bored of it about 100 or so eps in, but...yeah.

    ****

ChibiUsa/Chibi Moon and Chiba Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen from the original Sailor Moon series, bleah. I disliked the way ChibiUsa's character was because she came across as disrespectful when it came to Usagi and a bit spoiled and ungrateful on a bothersome level. I can get the spoiled thing, as she was an only-child, but it seemed a bit extreme to me. This really really bugged me, but don't get me wrong. I love her for the manga, flaws and all, I just felt the anime didn't do her much justice. I'm not sure if she was the same for Crystal.

Anywho, for the most part, I definitely preferred the manga versions of both Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen and ChibiUsa. As for Mamoru, he actually did stuff for the manga, had real attacks, and even a combo, father/daughter one with ChibiUsa. For the anime, seems all he was good for was to deliver cheesy lines and get himself kidnapped or brainwashed. I kinda hated his Damsel in Distress role, even though some of these things happen in the manga, but he still played more of a role.

ChibiUsa was a lot less bratty and shows a bit more respect towards Usagi. For the manga, I really liked the both of them. The anime just screwed them over and made me want to scream every time they showed up.

Another thing I disliked that the anime seemed to do that the manga didn't was the whole crush on Mamoru thing from ChibiUsa's side. She seemed to have a crush on the guy, even after finding out that he was to be her father in the future. If the anime didn't mean for it to come across that way, then they failed miserably. That was just way too creepy for me. The whole ChibiUsa and Pegasus thing was too. For the SuperS manga, you got the impression that she was in love with Helios, for the anime, it almost seemed like she was in love with Helios, but in Pegasus form. *Coughs*beastiality*Coughs*

    ****

I found Ayeka from the Tenchi Muyo series annoying with the way she kept pursuing Tenchi, but I found her snobbish attitude more so bothersome and, imo, I feel this is my main problem with her character. To me, she came across as a spoiled brat, yet, her sister, Sasami is, to me, the complete opposite and I really liked her character. I do admit to Ayeka bring some interesting situations to the series, just those character traits I have a problem with, even though it could be due to the fact that she was raised as royalty...then again, so was her sister...

    ****

Takada Kiyomi from Deathnote. Her character was really annoying to me for both the manga and the anime. I mainly disliked the way her character was because, like with Ayeka from Tenchi Muyo, she came across as snobbish (about the only way she can be compared to Ayeka), and acted as if she were better than everyone else or saw others as being beneath her and thus treated them that way. The way she treated Misa was just terrible. I've always disliked that trait in a character.

    ****

Yagami Raito (Light) from Deathnote. Even though his intentions were...somewhat admirable, I guess, I hated his attitude and personality thinking that his way was the right way or that his view was correct and acted as if he were some kind of a flawless Godly Dictator. He came across as very selfish to me, and disliked the fact that he would even dispose of his own family just to achieve any of his goals or ambitions and his treatment of Misa, viewing her as expendable, for the most part was unforgivable for me...

    ****

Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X. Season 1, I was okay with him, but seems that anything beyond that, his character just got on my nerves. I guess it's because he took the parts of some of the other characters. Like how instead of having Amy talk sense into Shadow, like how it played out game wise, if I'm remembering right, they decided to use Chris instead. Bah, I don't know what it is. Maybe it's his, to me, unnatural obsession with Sonic that irked me (he spent years trying to find a way to meet him again by the time of season 3) or the fact that the writers were reaching for ways to have him included past season 1. It didn't seem natural at all and pretty much everything dealing with his character past season 1 seemed very forced. At least in season 1, he did contribute to the story naturally, but beyond that he could've been absent for the majority of it, and the story still would've gone on fine.

  10. In Japanese anime it is understandable because of the cultural aspect of it and the satire is pretty much all that the anime plays on there. I've met a few Japanese people and they have fond memories of onsen so I can see why it would be a popular element in Japanese television/movies.
Yeah. Onsen are very relaxing and nice. I haven't gone in a long time, though.
  11. Manga > anime for me. It's been over 10 years since I've avidly watched anything, unless revisiting an older series. Anime just doesn't hold my attention like it used to.

I did get some recommendations like Joker's Game and I was legit interested in Attorney Phoenix, but grew bored of both. I was recently recommended Gintama. I may check it out. The only anime I'm still semi keeping up with are the Detective Conan films (stopped watching the anime about 6 or 7 years ago, but still read it) and Digimon Adventure Tri, which I would be ditching if my curiosity wasn't so high. As a matter of fact, I'm going to the theater today to watch the latter's fourth installment.

Seems manga holds my attention more than anime. I tend to eventually finish those. lol

So anyway, I do feel manga deserves more credit.

  12. I've learnt that around some fans you never call Anime a cartoon :P

and when your a kid the term anime means nothing. hence why i don't include them

lol The fans so insistent on that should go to a video store in Japan and go to its anime section. Their minds would probably explode as western stuff is generally lumped in together with it since anime is short for animation.

  13. Sorry, forgot something. Tales of Symphonia is an OVA, and there's more than one.

Tales of Symphonia the Animation: Sylvarant-hen

Tales of Symphonia the Animation: Tethe'alla-hen

Tales of Symphonia the Animation: Sekai Tougo-hen

That's the order you should watch them. The other Tales of Symphonia OVAs are just silly specials.

If you want, you could look at the junk on my list. It isn't much compared to most here, but you can check for things you haven't seen.

  15. not including things like Transformers and Pokemon (since as a kid I just referred to them as cartoons) my first true anime was Ghost in the Shell.
An anime is a cartoon. A Japanese-animated cartoon.

Same, though probably 1988 or 1989 for me... if I remember correctly, one of my older brothers had some of it recorded on VHS. Following that I stumbled upon the original Dragon Ball run in 1995 - up to this point I didn't actually know what anime was.

The first time I started to hear about anime was in 1998, when a friend of mine started talking in hushed tones about the old Scifi channel's new saturday night anime feature, and of all of the incredible things that they'd witnessed on it. I was interested, so I decided to give it a shot. I was thus subjected to Project A-Ko (crap) and Demon City Shinjuku (crap!).

I wasn't impressed. Actually, I thought the whole thing was fairly horrible. It wasn't until that same friend invited me over later in the same year and introduced me to Tenchi Muyo (also crap, but I had lower standards at the time) that I particularly enjoyed anime without being completely ignorant of its origins.

I didn't know what "anime" was until maybe the mid-90s, where I heard the term "Japanimation" and "Japanime".
