patday8428
Why are the dubbers running some anime... with adult themes? I was watching ghost stories amine on an anime tv network. The dub version is not correctly translated to English version and adult themes were added. I had to stop watching it because it made me sick. The original story line was changed. I checked out the subtitle version. It stayed with the original story line & I liked it. I also think the dubbers are going way to far with the adult themes. One issue that bugs me, is there using adult theme with kids that is why I turned off the show & went to the computer. It is very close if not breaking U.S. law. & other county laws. I am surprised the censors didn't catch. It made me want to puke.
stumpndum
Ok ghost stories has a bit of a weird story. The original japanese dub sold.... very very poorly and the company didn't really want to spend much on an oversea's market so they sold the right to whoever the hell did it i can't remember at the moment. Anyway they were only given a very short set of instructions on how to dub it, 1 the character/monster names can't change and 2 the overall plot of the episode can't change. So the company went nuts and did a full gag dub making fun of everything. While no longer the childrens show it used to be it had it's rating turned up and sold much better as an adult comedy piece, so much so that it actually had the english dub, subbed and resold in japan to much more success. Personally i thought the show was hilarious but i did go into it on the recommendation that it was a gag comedy piece. It's also no where near breaking any laws apart from maybe germany cause im sure there's a nazi joke somewhere. I'd recommend watching it if you want what is basically the first abridged series but if the comedy's not for you that's fair. Also i think this is the only dub of it's kind so i wouldn't exactly say dubbers are ruining anime.
patday8428
I am now wondering if there is more than one dub version of Ghost stories. Anyone can dub. Also, I was just using this one as an example of one Anime that changed to using adult theme. There are other ones as well. This is the first time I came across an Anime that used cartoon children for adult themes. Which is unacceptable for me. However, Japan & other countries may have to tone down the anime to a rated r level or less from what I am reading. Don't get me wrong. I like some anime, even some of the violent ones. Okay so between this post and the first one I've got like a thousand questions, but I'll try to narrow it down here. First of all, were you not aware that the dub was done this way on purpose? Beyond what stump mentioned in their post, there are some rumors going around that no one was really paid well either so they kind of just did whatever they wanted to. Second, what about adult themes bothers you? Are you saying you would stay away from anime like Another or Claymore just because they are violent, or does it have more to do with what's said? I mean you said you like some violent anime, but where's the threshold on that? There are a lot of anime out there with adult themes that are better for it, and honestly Ghost stories is ironically one of the best examples of that. Finally, for now at least, what other anime are you talking about with adult themes that were changed for the dub? Because I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm interested to see what you are referring to. Also, short point, but no, there is no other dub, at least in English of Ghost Stories. The English version is by far and away the most well known version and a commonly known entity in anime. Weird as it might seem, if someone else did try to dub it, they'd probably catch a lot of hate for daring to mess with it.
patday8428
I really don't know how to explain it. The dub version would be fine with me, if the characters were not kids. I guess the simple way is don't use adult themes with kids even in cartoon or anime forum. I have been discovering several anime I like & some I dislike. A lot people think Anime should be illegal. I don't agree with that. I think some are illegal in Canada. Which kind of surprises me, I thought Canada was more open. There is a point where it goes to far for me. Just my personal opinion. I just want to make sure, I don't watch something that could be illegal in the U.S. but not in the country of origin or the rest of the world. That what really concerns me.
