I also remember a scene with the main character and his rival(?) talking about a rumour of powerful fire type monster. It was on netflix, early 2010's/late 2000's quality. Not sure how complete this is but you might want to try and look through what series netflix streamed. This site has something like this but I think it's only currently available shows.
