Optic
I have had a dim view of Australia's classification system ever since they refused classification for Left 4 Dead 2 back in 2009 because we didn't have an R18+ rating back then for games. This basically meant it was essentially banned in Australia. After much lobbying and public interest we thankfully we now have an R18+ rating for games. Now I am now reminded again of that classification system when yesterday I bought all 5 volumes of Kill la Kill from JB Hi-Fi and I was asked for ID! Huh? I thought it was just M... oh the fourth volume is rated R18+... High impact animated sexual violence?? Familiar of Zero was imported from the US - I like how they don't plaster the classification rating on the front cover. I'm mind-boggled because the UK and US didn't get R18+ ratings for Kill la Kill: In the UK, the BBFC classified Kill la Kill as 15:http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/kill-la-kill-video-8 And when Kill la Kill was aired on TV on Cable TV in the US, they classified it as TV-MA:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3114390/parentalguide?ref_=tt_stry_pg It bothers me that our Australian classification system is wholly inconsistent. The only other anime titles I've seen on the shelf that deserved the R18+ rating were hentai titles which is of course, fair enough. End of rant. And time to watch those titles I bought. The Scientific Toast
How odd that they essentially rated it like a pornography, if I'm getting it right. Is Australia normally this strict in rating things? I know here in the US, something like Kill la Kill would air late at night (I think it aired on Adult Swim around 1am EST), and even if it's a bit suggestive, that wouldn't matter much. The FCC allows this kind of stuff after 10PM usually, when younger ones should be in bed. Australia just seems to be strict in these kinds of things, sometimes too strict. Optic
Is Australia normally this strict in rating things? Ah... they're pretty good most of the time. I suppose what bothers me is, if they're going to classify something, make it more consistent. Whilst Kill la Kill's plot does escalate as Ryuko fights higher and more tougher foes (even if the combat Kamuis are really skimpy), it just seems silly to classify the first eight episodes (Volume 1/2) as M, then classify the last few episodes as MA15+ and R18+ which essentially locks a 15 year old out from finishing the darn series because of that classification. I understand the volumes were released at different times but ehh, it just seems like a ridiculous scenario. Hook you in with the first few volumes then when it gets released, bam! R18+ More consideration should be given to the previous volumes IMO.
AvatarAvocado
A 17+ and 18+ rating is basically the same thing, it's only a year.
