Why I've Been Away (And Cats!)

I've been away for quite awhile, mostly because I don't know what to do with the state of my health. I'm used to being chronically ill, but ever since December I've had acute illness after illness, as soon as one leaves I get another. My lungs still have not fully recovered from the bronchitis I developed before Christmas, even. Just this past week I had a stomach virus, and the very day the virus started to improve I came down with a sinus infection which resulted in my face swelling as if a golf ball had grown in it and I was completely unable to chew food. I decided to stop waiting until I "feel better" to get online, because I no longer have any idea of if or when that will be.

Along with my health there have been a couple other factors that have kept me from getting online, one being that we've started having frequent power outages due to storms, where the power will go out sometimes multiple times a week for 20-36 hours. And, because one of my hedgehogs, Wendy, passed away three weeks ago. It's been really hard. She passed away much younger than expected, most likely due to some hidden health complications due to an infection she had as a baby. I am a person who gets majorly attached to animals, especially my own pets, so it's hit me hard. For the first week and a half I just completely isolated myself while I dealt with the grief. But, I'm trying to push myself to get back out there, because I know it's not good for my depression to stay like that.

However, there is some good news! Five weeks ago my family adopted three cats:

Pooka is goofball who always wants to either cuddle, play, or find some trouble to get into. He's my younger sister's cat and he will wake her up by biting her face, she has taught him to sit on command, he doesn't quite know how to meow but chirps instead, get stuck behind the dryer, tries to jump into the spinning ceiling fan, and enjoys scaring me by running up and wrapping himself around my legs to hear me scream.

Hunk is a sweet big boy, who is largely bonded to my older sister and parents. He's 15lbs and a healthy weight, but on a strict diet because he is obsessed with food and will gorge himself if you let him. After finishing his own serving of food he will search the house for more, often trying to steal the hedgehog's food. While he doesn't like to be held, and doesn't like to be petted too much he does enjoy chin and face scratches. He also loves to sit beside people on the couch while they read or watch TV. He gets scared easily, and if an object is reflecting the least bit of light he will bop it with his paw, sometimes jumping away before bopping it again, until he is satisfied it won't attack him.

Izuku is my baby and I am absolutely in love with him. He is the sweetest darling who would never hurt or scratch anyone. He loves to talk, he's always having a conversation loudly meowing. Most mornings he is my alarm clock. He is happiest cuddled up in bed sleeping with his head resting on my legs, but he also loves looking out the window, sleeping under the bed, or on top of the piano or bookcase. He will come running if I shake the treat bag. He loves to play, especially with his brothers. He will try to coax them to play by bopping or wrestling with them. He has the loudest purr, and getting attention makes him beyond happy. He's such a darling! <3

Anyways, guys, that's all for now! I hope I can catch up on the forums tomorrow, goodnight!

Well, I for one am glad to see you back again.  I hear the acute illness thing.  A couple of years ago I had a pneumonia/head cold from working with all those pediatric patients (half of them with whooping cough.  Parents would rather their children suffer and die from asphyxiation than vaccinate them these days.  Tragic and inhumane.).  I halfway think it was whooping cough (I could have been one of those non-responders) it was so bad.  Took me three months to recover.  I looked like death walking.  Anyways, as a Southerner, I suggest chicken soup.  The broth cures almost everything (it warms the soul, so even if you aren't cured you still feel better.).

I am so sorry to hear about Wendy too.  Losing a pet is never easy.  When I lost Tiggr, I thought my soul might never mend.  It's good though that you have three new additions to the family to help you get through it.  Izuku sounds a lot like Riptide in some ways.

@Beocat, That is so sad about the whooping cough epidemic! When I was young I wasn't aware of how important vaccinations were, but the past few years I've really seen how important they are and it's sad so many children have been affected by not having them. That's awful that you were sick for so long, too!
I should get more chicken broth, I haven't had any recently, but there's actually currently a big pot of it cooking on the stove! Earlier this year I found it's great to add soy sauce, garlic, onion, ginger, fish sauce, and Korean red pepper flakes to chicken broth. It really helped with my bronchitis, and it's delicious!

Thank you, I really appreciate it! When she passed away it was such a shock, I don't know the last time my heart hurt that much or I cried that much. It's been really hard for me to watch anything that involves people losing someone they love since then.
The cats are definitely helping me! They are such darlings, and I love them so much already. Aww, I've heard about Riptide so it makes me happy that they're similar!

I need to try to take Izuku to the vet next week, he seems to have asthma an keeps having attacks, so I'm hoping we can get him on a control medicine and an inhaler. Both him and Hunk were previously diagnosed with FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus).

Dunno what to say anymore. It's really unfair you have to go through this when you've done nothing to deserve any of it. I'd find whatever makes you happy and enjoy it to it's fullest right now. At least you have a great family to support you. Pets are cool too....I guess I never had any. If I had to deal with all that in my current situation I'd have given up on everything long ago.

I am definitely enjoying what I can! Plenty of pet cuddles, gaming, and anime help. Since it's genetic most of my family has the same condition with various symptoms, so while I'm sad they are also sick and it's really hard watching when they are in critical condition, it does help that we can all understand each others' struggles and support one another.
I've had pets nearly my whole life, and they really encourage me! I love them dearly.
There have been times when my depression was so bad that I wanted to give up, but my faith, family and friends, and pets help get me through it. Thankfully it's been awhile since I've felt this way and while it's hard and discouraging I am determined to get through it!

That is so sweet and encouraging, thank you! I'll be sure to take you up on that.
It makes me happy that you are appreciating the cats' cuteness, I love them dearly and I want everyone to know how precious and perfect they are. lol I love dogs, too! It's actually in the plans to get me a service dog, though I don't know when that will be an option financially. When I do get one I want it to be a standard poodle!

Thank you all for the support! I'm having a difficult health day, but I know so many kind people that it's still a happy day!
