I don’t think “bonding” was the correct word for my experience  

Not familiar with the expression, but mom would not have been flattered by the term cougar  Dad felt like if he had already said something once, that should be enough. If it wasn’t, maybe he didn’t say it loud enough  In spite of it all, never had reason to doubt that they wanted nothing but good for me & was blessed to have both in my life until fairly recently. Appreciate them while you can.
