  1. Installed (pre32) optifine in 1.17.1 of minecraft.  Optifine actually makes MC playable at 4k on a 4-core Ryzen 5 3400G APU in a deskmini X300 set-top-box case.  True, 20FPS on low settings is marginal, but given that there's only the integrated GPU in the Ryzen chip - no room for a discrete GPU in that X300 case - that it is playable at all at 4k is remarkable.  If I drop the resolution down to standard HD and turn vsync on I get a solid 30fps, even with sildur's shaders, a x128 texture pack, and a bit of eye-candy enabled in the settings.  (The display is a "TV" in the den so anything more is a waste of computing cycles.  30fps is as fast as it gets.)

It's a car racing themed anime, where there are (I think) 3 groups - human, machines, and beasts.

Sounds vaguely like Redline. (Imagine if the game Borderlands were made into an anime.  Sort of.)

If you like racing anime then you could do worse.  Even if it turns out to be not what you're looking for it is worth a watch.

  3. So I opened my Steam client for the first time in a while and noticed Valve has announced a new toy.  Their "Steam Deck", a new portable gaming platform that looks like it might give the just-announced OLED Switch some competition.  The blurb says, "It is a Zen 2 + RDNA 2 powerhouse, delivering more than enough performance to run the latest AAA games in a very efficient power envelope."  Supposedly available in December, assuming the asian chipmakers can get their logistics sorted out by then, but you can place a reservation now.  Prices of between $400 and $650 have been announced as well, depending on model.  More specs and such available here.

Interesting?  Or another Steam Machine style flop?

  4. I've got "Project B.E.A.S.T." going in the background while I do some household paperwork & bill paying.  No time to actually play games these days but BEAST is an old Kerbal Space Program series and basically a very good tutorial on how NOT to play the game.  We were all there once.  :D  Entertaining for KSP addicts like me.

I so want to get the Cottage Living expansion for the Sims 4! There’s other Sims 4 stuff I want as well, but it’s gonna be a long time before I can buy more for that haha.

Not too long ago I got Cities: Skylines for super cheap through Steam. Haven’t actually played it yet (I’m on a Sims kick at the moment), but I’m suuuuuper looking forward to it.

Hmm, I should probably also see if I can restore my village in Banished. It got slammed by a couple tornadoes the last time I played, ruined a whole bunch of buildings and very sizeable chunk of the population. I miiiiiight be able to just barely save my village and rebuild, takes some serious priority management though, which is why I stopped playing for awhile hahaha!

Never could get into The Sims games.  Might be partly due to an old house (irl) that constantly needs repairs & upgrades.  Seemed kinda.. redundant.  :D

C:S otoh.. that’s one of my favorites.  I played SimCity to death.  I was there at the beginning with the original Maxis version on the Amiga platform and snatched up most of the non-windos versions as soon as they were released.  I had the Loki port to Linux of SC3K, and I even had a mobile version on the old Palm Pilot. 😮  I had to give SC up due to EA’s BS but I grabbed Cities: Skylines up as soon as it came out.  Never looked back.

Works ok on Linux via Steam btw.  I ran into some issues early on but lately it has been working much better.  (Knock on wood.)  Not a big fan of DLC but I do have a few key bits like sunset harbor, industries, green cities, and mass transit that improve gameplay.  (IMO anyway)  And after dark just for the eye candy.  A few key mods like node controller, anarchy, move it, and TM:PE as well.

Now if I could just find some time to play it.  😭

She sounded pretty sure of herself so we reckoned her name was in fact Muffin.

Yeah, kids come up with interesting pet names.  I had a dog named “Velcro” once.  :)

    Yems her name is Muffin.

There a story behind that selection?

Anti-acquisition.  Clearing out an old bookshelf.  Does anyone actually still use these things?  :D

I saw someone on Ebay selling the complete collection of Evangelion on VHS a few years ago for about $200 and for a moment, I was tempted!

Can you even find a player anymore for VHS though?  Also, I’d be afraid of damaging the media.  Players had a habit of eating tapes.

I just like owning physical copies of things, though I'm not really sure why.

One very practical reason is that stuff tends to disappear from streaming sites as licensing agreements change, often with little or no warning.  There also sometimes collector/investment value in owning your own copy.

I like streaming sites to find new material, but anything I like enough for it to have replay value I buy the physical.  Subscribing to every streaming site gets expensive.  Even then you’re not guaranteed to be able to find a given title online when you want to watch it.

That one did pass the 3ep test to make it onto my watch list but tbh it is one of those I’ll probably keep pushing down my queue in favor of more interesting material.

I’ll give it another episode or two.  If it hasn’t pulled me in by then however it is likely doomed to watch-list limbo.

  10. So the last (pre 2.0) version of Kerbal Space Program just dropped.  There's now an alarm clock and a transfer orbit calculator built into my fav game!  Basically the Kerbal Alarm Clock and Transfer Window Planner mods are now part of stock.  These are two mods that I don't play without so I'm completely in favor of the change.  KAC especially should have been there long ago but at least it finally happened.

Was not sure if I should post this here or make a new thread but I am currently in the process of building a new pc. It's been a few years and I'm struggling with the whole gpu situation. Am I better off waiting for prices to go down or is over paying for one unavoidable at this point?

GN just did a look-see into building a system with a CPU + IGP compared to a CPU + discrete GPU.  They compared an AMD 5600G to i3-10100 + GT 1030.  As usual from GN there's lots of testing and numbers but if you're into that sort of thing it is worth a watch...

  12. Anyone heard anything interesting out of E3 this year?  I’ve been trying to find time to watch the newsfeed(s) but  so far not having much luck.  I’m also not a big console player (SIL has an Xbox, brother has a PS but I just have an old GBA) so most of it is  kinda n/a as far as I’m concerned.
