Mm. No, I'm referring to a pink sauce.

It did have a pink(ish) tinge.  I’m guessing at the makeup but it tasted like mayo, ketchup (tomato paste?), garlic, and maybe onion and/or couple other spices.

Tell me, do you know what shrimp sauce is? I went to a Canadian Japanese place and people tell me they've never heard of it.

The shrimp sauce I’ve encountered is a white sauce condiment that sort of reminded me of thousand island salad dressing.  I’ve tried it but I’m not a big fan of mayonnaise and that seemed to be a major component so .. not my thing.

I haven't heard of a Sakana restaurant. I know of a Sakura restaurant.

I have both.  Sakana is a little hole-in-the-wall that shares a strip mall with a Korean mini-mart and a hair salon.  If I want a good sushi-and-beer on the way home from work that’s where I’d go.  (“Sakana” is Japanese for “fish”.) The Sakura (“cherry blossom”) is a more upscale place in the better part of town that I’d go to for things like entertaining guests.  They have those grill-tables manned by a “theatrical chef” who will build you an onion-ring volcano as they cook your food, a-la Benihana.

  4. Around here (Southern California) Asian food is second only to Mexican.  Even the chain supermarkets sell sushi.  I can get donburi in the cafeteria at work.  There’s a pretty good sashimi restaurant named “Sakana” just a few blocks away from my house, and at least 4 Japanese-cuisine restaurants close enough to frequent on a regular basis.

Yeah, I eat Japanese food.  😋

I have the original PF version on vinyl.  And cassette, and CD.  (And of course ripped to mp3 therefrom the latter.)  Even 8-track at one time, though that one self destructed, as that format was prone to do.  Yeah, I liked The Wall.

I'd love to be able to build large cities like that but I just don't have the time or patience for it unforunately.

I’ve done a couple large-scale projects in the long-ago past.  (Long, -long- ago .. anyone remember the days when you smelted  iron and cooked food with flint and steel?  😮 )  It was fun but I don’t have that kind of time anymore, and it always seems something happens to lose it anyway.. the group breaks up or the server goes down, etc.  These days I just play for fun when I get the chance.

btw, there’s a MC topic somewhere around here.

been so long I’ll probably need to refresh my memory, though I do remember there being very few actual answers to whats going on

Yes, that’s been a kind of weird and long one.  In a good way, though with so many unanswered questions a lot depends on how they wrap it up in the end.

It will definitely come back to haunt you, take it from someone who bought waay too many anime VHS tapes back in the 90s 😂

With me it was books.  Lots and lots and lots of books.

tbh i would have kids and a wife i want my bloodline to contune

tbh, I would too.  Practically speaking tho.. between work, fixing the old house, and looking out for someone who has trouble even changing channels on the TV by herself I don't have much time left for things like dating or courtship.  (Never mind kids!  Have you ever seen what even a single 2yo can do to a pair of otherwise sane adults?? And to even get that far you have to get past the newborn stage. :) )

  10. Thinking about updating my "old" 2700X CPU in my main desktop to something like a 5900X.  A 5900X is 50% more cores and more than double the performance overall, but since it uses the same AM4 socket and has the same heat dissipation it is theoretically a simple drop-in replacement for the 2700x.  Just have to decide if I want to pay for the upgrade.  (And find one in stock.)

I haven't made any significant upgrades to the system since I built it over a year ago so I can somewhat justify the upgrade based on the magnitude of the performance difference.  To do it right I should probably upgrade the memory too tho.  Currently I'm using 3400Mhz RAM OCed to 3600.  The (x470) motherboard+BIOS supports up to 4400Mhz.  That would add another few $$$ to the expense.

  11. So now there's at least two experiments that are hinting that there's something odd going on with muons.  Still needs more supporting data - and a testable hypothesis about what's going on would be nice as well - but it already seems pretty solid.

  12. On weekends I go to my other job.  Old houses are such fun.  This weekend was fixing the hole in the front door and replacing a run of network cable under the house.  (We're rural enough that wildlife chewing on wires is a thing around here.)

I think the availability problem will continue for a bit longer, I fear maybe even into the next year, but I'm sure at least until fall. I only hope my Laptop isn't going break...

That’s another thing I’m looking for.  My old laptop is one of the 2013(ish?) MacBook airs.  It was old and slow and I was looking to replace it even before COVID.  System76s “pangolin” model looks nice.. or would if it were ever in stock.

  14. I was thinking today that if the GPU pricing / availability situation goes on like this for much longer then I may consider replacing my "old" Ryzen 2700X CPU with something like one of the upcoming 5800G APUs.. and selling my old radeon RX480 gfx card on ebay to pay for it.

Another entry for the "weird things COVID made us do" column.

I do crave reading a high fantasy that revolves around political conflict. Something like Lord of the Rings in terms of its fantasy elements but the story is more or less a civil war. Basically any Final Fantasy title or a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. The ones I randomly pick from any store is often, if not always, a fantasy adventure of a 'hero of prophesy' or a normal child dipped into a fantasy world a la Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz.

Have you read Zelazny's Amber series?

Hambly's Darwath Trilogy is worth a read too, IMHO.

Extreme setting creates new gameplay hahaha. But honestly though, was that really Valheim? I don't remember it looking that good from the Youtube videos I've watched..

Likely depends on the system & GPU to a large extent but I've got the early access version and yes, that's pretty much what it looks like on my system.  (Ryzen 7 2700X, Radeon RX 480, 5.4 linux kernel with open-source AMDGPU driver)

Woah, some great insight here. I was recently looking at MMO games even though ive never been a gamer. A big hang up for me was that I'm no good at interaction with people, and i wondered what the gaming experience was like. The previous comme ts on this post were extremely informative.

I hate people too.  Well, some of the time.  :D  Maybe hate is too strong a word but interacting with people is definitely not one of my strengths, and it usually tires me out quickly.  Over the years I've learned to overcome it but I'm definitely more on the introvert end of the scale.

That said, I do find that multiplayer online games can be fun.  There are a lot of games that are multiplayer-optional too.  Minecraft for instance will even let you start in single-player mode, then if you like you can open your single-player game up to other players on your local LAN.  Ultimately of course Microsoft would like you to rent yourself a "realms" server from them and play online with a bunch of your friends (even friends not on your LAN), but they make it easy to start single-player and take baby-steps toward multiplayer as you're ready.  Something like that might be good to start with.  In fact, some of my best experiences with multiplayer gaming have been in "LAN party" mode, not MMO games per-se.

I would even say stay away from most of the big-name MMO games if you're at all unsure of yourself.  Especially games like fortnite or PUBG that are highly competitive by design - arena-style "battle royale" or "last man standing" - can be quite intimidating to get into multiplayer.  They can be fun once you do get familiar with it and I'm not saying stay away forever but I wouldn't make something like that my first choice.  Unless you like learning to swim by jumping in the deep end of the pool of course.  :)  (For me they're boring too because there's no story or progression of any sort, just repetitive kill-or-be-killed on the same map(s) over and over.  But that's more a personal preference sort of thing.  Some people do enjoy that.)
