Anyway, the option to have mods is nice but like I said I rarely use them (it ruins some of the fun with certain mods).

That can definitely be a problem.  There's a mod for my fav Kerbal Space Program called "MechJeb".  It basically flies your spacecraft for you and there's endless "debate" in KSP forums about whether it saves or destroys the game.  I don't use MechJeb but there are some that I won't play without.  One of my long-standing must-haves is something called Kerbal Attachment System that allows you to build and repair minor stuff outside of the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building).  The most recent version of the game included that feature in stock.  Of course I think that's extremely cool, but it does change the game play somewhat.  I haven't seen anyone yet go so far as to say it destroys the game but there's low-volume grumbles from some of the forum denizens.

Personally I don't really care what other people do to their own game.  I only care when people use outright "cheat" mods that let them do things like get all the arms/ammo/armor or see through or move through buildings in multiplayer arena-style games because that affects the game for other people.

    Stardew Valley (PC)

I really prefer the PC version over the console simply because it's a lot easier to control and feels like it isn't limited. I really started working on the mines as soon as they opened up so I could find ore, bait, etc.

👍  Same here.  My mom plays SV on her ipad & I've tried it.  I'd rather use the PC.  Not only for SV but for most things..  minecraft, pretty much anything that has mods available for it, etc.

  3. There was a new Ghost in the Shell this year and I missed it??  Man I gotta stop working so much.

A (maybe too) quick check of the usual suspects shows that it doesn't appear to be streaming anywhere however.  Anyone know where to find it?  Legally I mean.

  4. Rather cool, rain, hail, and a fairly good thunder and lightning show at the moment. I was trying to sleep but with all the racket I decided a midnight snack and watching the show out my window was the more interesting option.

  5. My brother said he'd get in touch for a Christmas discord session as soon as he could wrangle the computer from the kids.  Thinking that might be a while :D so I decided to check out the latest version of KSP while I wait.  Started a new career & just doing the early game missions.  I can do these in my sleep at this point so really just kind of just kicking back.  Looks like the interesting new-to-this-version cargo-carrying parts are fairly high-tech and I'll have to level up a bit to start playing with those.  I did take Jeb on a flyby of the Mün already & I have enough cash to start upgrading the facilities.

Jeb's always happy to see the parachute at the end of a mission.  :)

  6. I'm fairly active but I have extremely limited time.  A lot of the time when I come through I just read the latest posts and move on.  Even if I see something interesting I tell myself to come back later when I have more time to respond but the chances of that actually happening are pretty slim.  Between work and taking care of my (80yo) mom and fixing this old house I already have almost 0 social life, and lately with the holidaze I haven't even had time for things like watching anime or playing games so even checking the forums is kind of pointless.  (Though obviously I do anyway. :)

As for what can be done about that I don't know.  I hear the days on Mars are 40 minutes longer than here.  Maybe we could all move to Mars and spend the extra time each day watching an episode of anime and then commenting on it here on the forums.  👽

  7. Started a new map in Cities: Skylines.  Not really going for anything, just relaxing.  I picked a nice, flat map with a bit of forest so I can have a mostly forestry-based (i.e. low-pollution) industrial sector, and so far I've been able to satisfy my power needs with wind and a minimal amount of conservation.  Everyone is happy, pollution is minimal, crime is low... if only this were the real world.  :D

Also died in the Nether again in Minecraft. It's funny how I can get there, and then... Never come back.

The Nether is a lot more interesting since the update.  Also more dangerous, and easier to get distracted & lost in.

  9. Not a lot..

I did get in about an hour of KSP last week but that's all the gaming I've had time for in the last couple weeks.  :(

(KSP does not show up here because I keep my KSP games in a separate folder from the rest of my Steam stuff.  My KSP install has a number of mods and I want to keep it safe from Steam's update mischief.)

That said, I think we should focus on getting established on Mars first before we dream too far ahead. Right now all eggs are in the Blue Planet's basket and a single planetwide extinction event will end us all.

That's being worked on too.  A fully-fueled Starship in orbit is halfway to anywhere in the solar system.

Speaking of which, there's currently something of a 24/7 watch on Elon's little Boca Chica project at the moment.  They've done a number of engine test-firings with the Starship prototype (serial number 8 ) in the past couple weeks and the FAA has given clearance to 15km altitude for the next "hop", which is expected to happen any day now.  Elon has said there's about a 1 in 3 chance of everything going smoothly.  We'll see.  Should be exciting either way.

And after that there's SN9 already being built in the nearby high-bay.

  11. "There is a case that habitability on Pluto may be just as good as on the closer icy moons. In fact, if Pluto is the standard for dwarf planets found in the Kuiper Belt generally there may be many more habitable worlds out there."

There's a lot of real estate out there in dwarf planets too.  Even just in our Solar system there are hundreds of known dwarf planets, and probably hundreds more that we haven't seen yet.  (Even Hubble couldn't see much further than the inner bit of the Kuiper Belt.)  Yes, I said hundreds of planets in our own system, and each able to be the resource base for its own swarm of habitats.

How about this for another thought.. If the Kuiper Belt isn't enough then there is also the Oort cloud.  No reason to expect there not to be thousands of more planets - dwarf and otherwise -  out in the Oort cloud, which some models say extends out to over 120,000 AU.  64,000 AU is 1 light-year.  The nearest star system to our own is less than 4 LY away.  If it is similarly constructed then by the time we're reaching the limits of our system we should be inside the outer edges of the next system over.  Up the side of one gravity well and down the other.  All accessible without having to resort to magic technology like "warp" drives, though building all those colonies and expanding the frontier that far might take us a while.  Rome wasn't built in a day after all.

I have a suspicion this one is not going to end well either.  You can't just keep raising flags like this and expect something to not go very, very wrong somewhere, somehow.

Yep, as I suspected.  No spoilers from me, but I do recommend skipping this if you don't like the sad ones.

This year my parents literally brought food, and I ate it with just me, and my partner since COVID is still a thing.

A lot of that going on this year.  Our family usually gathers at my cousin's place for a sort of pot-luck turkey-day while watching the (US football) game.  This year that wasn't an option.  Everyone just stayed home with their immediate families.

What is it with these miles-long show names?
