I liked Deathnote okay, although I prefer the manga to it. At least one nice thing about the anime is that there's barely any filler. When the series started, the manga was nearly finished anyway. Anywho, I know quite a few people didn't like the second part of the series all that much, although personally, I had no problem with it. It remained interesting for me. Hope you can enjoy it.

For me, I have maybe...three that I seem to just get the urge to binge watch every year. I'm not always able to, though, but it's the same even now. Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors) Gundam Wing Cowboy Bebop

I've only been to Akihabara once back during my summer vacation from work in 2012. I was curious of the place. I was curious about gaming related stuff...older games. I came across a shop called Super Potato (which also has a location in Ikebukuro) which sold older game systems and games. I found a real Super Famicom there...not one of those newer ones, but an original. I also picked up some games. That was the highlight for me. I also went because I was hoping to find a shop with old manga stuff, but didn't find much. Other than those things, I don't recall doing anything else there. There were many maid cafes. Usually there was someone standing outside of them, trying to invite you to come to their cafe. Sucks that butler cafes are so rare in a general sense. I have been to a butler cafe before, but it wasn't in Akiba and you had to make a reservation at least I think two weeks in advance to go because they fill up fast and aren't as vast as maid cafes. The only downside to Akihabara is AKB. Oh, kind of off-topic, but if you're interested in older things (like me) I recommend going to Nakano in Tokyo. My god! I went there one time, as a friend took me. There are SO many shops with older things, like music and stuff! I found the Bokura no Digital World cd single (the Digimon Adventure 02 ep 50 memorial theme) still wrapped for like 8000 yen. I even checked the catalog number and it was legit! This cd is rare, because you had to collect all 12 character singles in order to get that one. It was the only copy there and I took advantage. I will never open it. If I were totally rich, I would definitely nerd out...more than say Akihabara. lol

Well, sushi isn't really about the fish, but if I'm not mistaken, mostly it's about the fact that it's prepared with vinegared rice. The ingredients can range from fish to chicken to only veggies. I've had chashu sushi prepared with mayo and onion before. Nigiri style. So yeah, there are other varieties and ingredients used other than fish.

Nice story here, but out of curiosity, why were you so stubborn about watching Japanese anime? What was your opinion about it at the time?
-
For the sake of discussion, yes, it does count! lol

I used to watch Monk ocassionally back home. They air reruns of it in Japan too. Anywho, for me, I don't watch much television in general, even back home, but I am watching the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. It's not so bad. I just started watching this show maybe last summer.

You mean the Michi e no Armor Shinka drama which took place Valentine's 2003? I don't recall anything "canon" at all for those two for that, just that Jun seemed interested in him or either Jou mentioned her while having a meal with his family...but I could be remembering it wrong. It has been a long time since I've heard it.

Howdy again all. Just thought I'd start another thread in hopes of prompting some conversation. So, what first introduced you to Japan? It could be a certain comic or anime series or maybe music or whatever. How'd you get interested in Japan or things associated with it? I'm sure everyone here has a story, so let's share them.
-
That sounds pretty interesting. Sounds like it would be nice to adapt. I can't think of many series right off that I've read over the years, as most do have an animated counterpart, but one of my favorite manga series, which has been finished, which prompted me to even start this thread is +Anima. +Anima has the potential, I feel to make a nice animated series and kinda wish that it did have one. I'd definitely check it out. I also feel that this series is probably underrated and not as known as others.

Oh I forgot Shuu x Jun. I like that pairing as well and have kinda used it in a fic (my head canon has that those two were married by the time the epilogue rolled around and that they met in university when she was a first year and he was in his last). I was so focused on the actual Chosen group I forgot about non-Chosen pairings. lol
-
The only ones I'm keeping up with are Kuroshitsuji and Detective Conan at the moment. Sucks Hunter x Hunter constantly goes into hiatus. Sometimes, I wish I could go to the manga-ka's home and shake him around and say, "WHY DO YOU KEEP GOING ON HIATUS! I'M TRYING TO REMAIN LOYAL HERE!" lol

I prefer manga to anime, but it also depends on the genre. Like maybe an action series would work better in an animated style. I will say this, though. Manga holds my attention more than anime does, generally.
-
Sorry, I wasn't sure where to ask this, so I decided to ask this here. So, there are some people who are manga readers as well as anime watchers and there are some manga series that don't have an animated counterpart. So, are there any manga series you wish were made into an anime series?
-
Hm, for me, I wish Fruits Basket could get redone or continued. Sucks it was never actually finished. It's one of my favorite manga series, so it would be interested to see another adaptation or a better one. Another series I wish would "continue" is the Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu series. Oh, I forgot to mention Gunsmith Cats.

I like Law & Order: SVU and NCIS. I love NCIS, though. I always find a way to watch it.
-
Hm, I've been thinking about this. I honestly can't say for certain, but maybe something with a fantasy element to it, but at the same time a bit of realism or series that involve a character having a legendary historical destiny or whatever. I like that in stories in a general sense, so the same can be said about anime series I suppose. I also like mystery stories.
-
Well, a good introductory series kinda depends on the person in question, right? I mean, genre should be taken into account, I mean. Let's say you have a friend who really likes adventure stories or fantasy stories...so maybe a good introductory series would be...one of the Tales series. Anyway, for me, I was watching Japanese-animated stuff without even knowing it. I grew up with 80s Nickelodeon so I was watching stuff like the Mysterious City of Gold, Noozles, Adventure of the Little Koala, Maya the Bee, Mapletown, etc. Nickelodeon back then used to import shows from Canada, the UK, and Japan. I just never thought about it. To me if it entertained me, didn't matter where it was from. My first series was probably original Voltron...but not by choice. I was forced to watch it. lol Another series, G-Force (Gatchaman) I also saw when very young and more so out of force. My older cousin liked these shows a lot...I couldn't get into them. The first series I saw where I consciously knew it was from Japan was probably...either Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z. lol Like I said above, I never thought about where a show was from. I just watched it.

Ah, like totally Japanese. That can be tough, trying to figure out the menus and stuff. Sorry, no I haven't. I've only been to Kyoto once and that was during Obon last August. Everyone and their mother is off that time of the year. lol When I finally arrived in Kyoto, it was so terribly hot and stuff, I didn't do any sightseeing my second day. I stayed in my nice cool hotel room. Someday I'll visit again, but in the fall or spring. Never again in summer.

Hi everyone. Since I'm in Digimon mode, I was wondering what everyone's favorite anything of either of the Digimon series are. Could be characters, pairings, actual Digimon, songs, etc. Also, I can only go up to Savers, as I never watched XRos Wars. Favorite series Tamers Favorite Goggleboy Motomiya Daisuke (Digimon Adventure 02) Matsuda Takato (Digimon Tamers) Digimon Adventure Izumi Koushirou Kido Jou Takenouchi Sora Takaishi Takeru Digimon Adventure 02 Tachikawa Mimi (her image theme truly made me a fan of her for 02) Hida Iori Inoue Miyako Ichijouji Ken Digimon Tamers Makino Ruki Lee Jianliang/Jenrya Kitagawa Kenta Digimon Frontier Kimura Kouichi Himi Tomoki Digimon Savers Noguchi Ikuto Daimon Chika Kurosaki Miki Shirakawa Megumi Fujieda Yoshino Now, favorite pairings...brace yourselves. ^^' Digimon Adventure/Adventure 02 Taichi x Sora Yamato x Sora Koushirou x Mimi (Ultimate fav pairing period) Jou x Mimi (Pretty much the only Jou pair I do like) Michael x Mimi Ryou x Mimi (I sorta like this one because of the games...she does flirt with him) Yamato x Mimi (One-sided; I like Yamato > Mimi) Koushirou x Miyako (My favorite Miyako pairing) Ken x Miyako (I just find it incredibly cute; also my fav Ken pairing) Iori x Miyako (I like it one-sided; Iori with a crush on Miyako) Daisuke x Hikari Koushirou x Hikari (I like this pairing angsty and one-sided and blame the Adventure love-letter drama; Hikari > Koushirou) Takeru x Hikari (I kinda like this pairing very very angsty) Ken x Hikari (I like this pairing one-sided; Hikari > Ken) Takeru x Ken (I like this angsty and one-sided more so; Takeru > Ken) Takeru x Koushirou (Same as above, I really love this one one-sided lol; Takeru > Koushirou) Takeru x Taichi (Same as above lol; Takeru > Taichi) Yamato x Jun (In an ironic sense where it's Yamato > Jun after she gets over him) Yamato x Chizuru (Chizuru is Miyako's older sister; the one with the short hair) Digimon Tamers Jenrya x Ruki (Favorite for Tamers) Ryou x Ruki Hirokazu x Ruki (I like it one-sided; Hirokazu > Ruki) Digimon Savers Ikuto x Chika Tohma x Sayuri (Sort of; I like the idea of him having a puppydog crush on her lol)

Last year, my resolution was to travel to either Osaka, Spain, or England. So the latter two didn't happen, but I did got to Osaka. This year, if I don't return to the US this spring... Travel to Kyoto (again). I went last year (still weird it's already 2015), but the weather was so muggy and hot and I wasn't feeling well once I arrived (low blood sugar) I just hung back in my hotel room while my friend went on the tours. I only did one thing while there which involved traditional Kyoto cuisine. Travel to Osaka (again). I want to check out the Pokemon Center there. I hear it's the biggest one in Japan. Try to study more Japanese than I recently have, especially my horrible vocab and listening. Work on some of my writing projects (original works) and finish some (old abandoned fics) Work on my health

Howdy. So lighthearted or silly? How about the series Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai or any of the Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nocchi Guu series? They're lighthearted and silly and not action heavy. If you like spoofy stuff, then Abenobashi should be okay for you. Edit: Never mind. You said "new". Sorry, can't help there. Um....if you like monster anime stuff okay, the kids always talk about Youkai Watch, although I've never seen it myself, or for shoujo, maybe the most recent Precure series.

*raises hand* Yup. My first time riding on the Shinkansen, I also had my DS. So I was playing Pokemon Heart Gold and there's the train you take from Johto to Kanto, which is based on the Shinkansen, so I fangirled over that silliness. lol That aside, yeah, riding on the Shinkansen is pretty expensive. I have most of my experience riding Japan East, not west though as I live in the north and head south. I usually don't buy food on the Shinkansen and bring my own stuff or pick up something right before getting on the train. I like being in a car with outlets so I can always have my mp3 player or iPad or whatever charged and it's a good place for a nap. Very relaxing. I also use the nonreserved car and try to be first in line so I can have first dibs on seats, even if I'm hauling around luggage. I always go for the seats closest to the doors where I can put my luggage directly behind me. Oh, and to my knowledge, I think that rail passes are only for visitors, not those living here. T_T

Takoyaki with whipped cream? I just couldn't imagine that combination. lol Edit: Taiyaki! My mistake, I misread Taiyaki as Takoyaki. The curse of being too lazy to clean my glasses. lol Okay, never mind all that. I've had Taiyaki before...forgot what the filling was for it. I know it wasn't azuki or whatever. Too sweet for me. Maybe it was custard or something. It was good, though. Hm, some Japanese foods I really like are: Sukiyaki Imoni (this is a regional dish, though, for the area I live in) Natto Miso Ramen Chashu Miso Ramen Miso Ramen in general (lol) Okonomiyaki Shabushabu Sushi Hayashi Rice Japanese-style curry And some others...but for absolute favorite...probably Sukiyaki.

Nah. I'm not very proficient at all. lol I have trouble expressing my thoughts in Japanese and I usually get "gist" not 100% understanding if someone speaks to me. Since I've lived where I am currently, the most I've used Japanese was when I was in the hospital. Recently, I had to do a nearly 7 week hospital stay. The end of August to early October. >< It actually was a good thing for Japanese because I had to use it everyday. Oh I see. In August, during Obon this year, I finally visited Kyoto amongst other places. I'd actually had never visited anyplace south of Yokohama. lol About time I finally visited the two old capitals (Kyoto/Nara). Hm, questions to ask...I'm assuming maybe like, 'How much is it?" and things like that? Oh I try to avoid Google Translate. I have a dictionary/translator app on my smartphone. Yeah, this is why it's important to at least learn Hiragana and Katakana. That'll make getting around a little easier. As for restaurants....to be honest, I don't go out to them much. Like a traditional Japanese restaurant, I know there'll probably be a lot of Kanji I can't figure out, so I only go if I have someone with me. Now stuff like ramen shops or yakitori shops or soba shops, etc., for instance, are easier to get. What kind of restaurants did you go to? Well, probably online in this day and age. Like I said, maybe that website I linked earlier, www.tanoshiijapanese.com would be good. I feel that it's also good for catching pronunciation too. Yeah, this would definitely be best. Maybe you could hang out after work or something like that. Glad to help in some way. lol ^^;
