  1. The original Star Trek series would rank pretty high.
I enjoyed Dr. Who through much of it’s run (original & the update). Though I must confess I was burnt out on it by the end of Cappaldi’s run & still don’t have the desire to get back into it. Also remember watching a horror anthology series called Tales From the Darkside weekly.

I enjoyed the Mystery anthology series on PBS back in the day as well as the Wonder Works specials. Some Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances & Red Green.

I enjoyed a lot of the old sitcoms with their ridiculous concepts (Munsters, Gilligan’s Island, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie). The original Muppet Show & The Simpsons, though that’s another burn out & have no interest in newer eps. A bit of local flavor in WKRP in Cincinnati

Honestly haven’t watched much non-anime tv in recent years 😅 Most recent was probably the 1st season of Daredevil.

  2. Robotech (mash-up of Macross/Southern Cross/Genesis Climber Mosoeda)

    Gunbuster

Big O (I consider this more giant robot, but you included Gridman & Dynazenon on your list)

    Broken Blade

    Ecaflowne (since you mentioned Rayearth)

    The Price of Smiles

    Str.A.In

    Lagrange - Flower of Rinne

Kirameki Project (this ones more of a parody of the mecha/giant robot genre & is also pretty ecchi 😳 )

Godannar (this one is extremely ecchi 😳😳😳 but storywise similar to Pacific  Rim)

You think I'm going to be able to stomach the amount of gore that's in it?

Probably, it did air on Adult Swim afterall. For me personally the most gruesome scenes were within the first 10 eps

particularly Eren  being eaten by a titan & then ripping out of it’s body after transforming

You know, I honestly will jump for joy if it got a 3rd season.

It definitely needs one to wrap things. And I admit I’m curious if there’s a direct connection to Soul Eater or if the cameos were just intended as easter eggs.

Plus, I will be checking out AOT tomorrow

I think you’ll enjoy it. Though we have to wait till next year for the grand finale (they promise it’s the end this time, honest 😂 )

I enjoyed Madoka, but Magia Record nit so much. Though I only watched the 1st season & am considering binging it from the start now that it’s over.

I remember not really enjoying the original Space Battleship Yamato (1974) anime series

The animation & english dub are definitely dated by modern standards. A lot of my love for it is definitely colored by nostalgia as it was my introduction to anime. Also need to remember that it aired on American tv at a time when “cartoons” were largely defined by Loony Toons, Tom & Jerry and Scooby Doo. Having said that, there are actually a couple points I prefer the original series to the remakes. In the original it was revealed that Sandor was a quadruple amputee, having lost both arms & both legs in a childhood accident. And had to have his prosthetics separated from his torso to escape a trap. Definitely a scene that made an impact on my preteen self even if it wasn’t graphic. Also, while the remake adding more female crew members & pilots might contribute to more inclusion, it also felt a bit more fanservicey with the tightness of the uniforms. Finally I felt like the remakes tried to add more of a metaphyscial aspect to things which made the story more confusing at times.

  7. Battle Angel OVA (1993) spacer.png

barely scratched the surface of the manga. Got something of a resurgence when James Cameron finally got around to making a live action film, but seems to have been largely forgotten again. Personally disappointed by the live action version and continue to hope for a more comprehensive anime adaption.

Appleseed - continues to get the occasional attempt at an adaption, but almost completely overshadowed by Ghost in the Shell.

Boogiepop Phantom - pretty commonly talked about back in the day. Got a more comprehensive adaption a few years ago, but didn’t really seem to catch on. Same goes for Kino’s Journey.

Macross - probably most famous outside Japan as the source for Robotech’s first arc. Supposedly the licensing disputes have been settled, but doesn’t seem like the multiple follow-up projects are really being pushed.

Will close by giving a bump to Gunbuster.

  8. Despite the length of their runs & the size of their fandoms, whatever the appeal of Naruto & Bleach are, it’s lost on me. Granted I tend to burn out on most shonen series even if I enjoyed them to start, but that usually doesn’t set in until around the ep 75 - 100 range. I dropped Fairy Tail & Black Clover sooner, but still found them enjoyable enough that there’s a decent chance I’ll revisit them someday. But I only made it to around a dozen episodes of Bleach & less for Naruto and even that felt like a chore.

Outside of shonen, I frequently see Kanon & Angel Beats listed as people’s favorites, but despite watching them I honestly don’t remember anything specific to the stories.

edit: I actually do remembered some things about Kanon: some sort of repeated allegory about a dango (jaoanese snackfood) family; some sort of festival centered around stars/starfish; one girl was always saying “Gao” ( or was that Air 😅 )

  9. You list Fate Stay Night as your favorite anime so maybe:

Fate Zero - prequel to Stay Night

Vinland Saga - epic, historic, violent

Shakugan no Shana - human teenager caught up in a conflict involving supernatural guardians. Some fanservice.

  10. What qualifies as “good” anime will largely depend on your personal preferences & interests. Your profile mentions Naruto & action based series so you’ll probably enjoy titles like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Soul Eater, Fire Force, Ushio & Tora, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Attack on Titan, Dororo, Vinland Saga.

Some other titles that I consider representative of different aspects of anime:

    Death Note (supernatural/psychological)

    Big O (giant robot/mystery)

    Cowboy Bebop (character driven)

    Star Blazers 2199 & 2202 (space opera)

    Fate Zero (supernatural/tournament/dark)

    Fruits Basket 2019-2021 (teen drama/romance)

    School Rumble (comedy/slice of life)

    Madoka Magica (magical girl/dark)

    Magic Knight Rayearth (shoujo/isekai)

    Re:Zero (isekai/dark)

    Slayers (fantasy/comedy)

this is actually just a small sampling & I’m not very familiar with some genres myself (mecha, sports, idol, etc) but hopefully some other members will have some suggestions & it will start you on your way. Once you have a clearer idea of what you like, feel free to ask for more recommendations.
