  1. Welcome to the forum!

If you haven't already seen it, I would suggest Steins;Gate. It doesn't fall into any of those categories specifically, but it has a romance that lies at the heart of the story, a plot with a deep mystery with every episode leaving you wondering, and a fair bit of thriller tension and comedy too. Could be a nice catch-all for you.

You may also like Psycho-Pass and Eden of the East :)

He usually says something along the lines of "You'll grow up someday." because he still believes all anime is for children.

When people say anime is for children, make them watch Berserk, Claymore, Elfen Lied, Blood C and see if they have the same opinion :D

  3. Anyone ever played Distant Worlds Universe? I play it occasionally if I have a lot of free time (it's a very time consuming game). Kind of like a space version of Civlisation.

Edit: Sorry, posted this to the wrong thread, was meant for 'Gaming Chat'.

  4. So I watched the first episode of this, just because I saw the intro and it was awesome.

Gives me Seraph of the End vibes minus all the interesting stuff. Maybe the plot will thicken as the story goes on. I know that I didn't really like that they basically announced that there was a conspiracy at the end of the first episode ("show don't tell" obviously went out of the window during writing lol).

I'll probably continue watching just for the intro because I like it THAT much, but as Ohayotaku says, the show seems pretty meh.

A lot of Tsuda’s  roles are yakuza or criminals (the lead from Way of the Househusband & Overhaul from My Hero Academia). Even when he’s not an outright villain it’s usually a character with questionable ethics (Joker from Fire Force & Mao-sama from Demon Lord Retry). He’s also been doing some narration lately (To Your Eternity, Cells at Work: Code Black). But that’s just a sampling.

On the dub side of things, the ones that stand out to me are Wendee Lee, Lisa Ortiz, Hillary Haag, Crispin Freeman & Steven Blum. You can probably guess from the list, but I don’t watch much dubbed anymore 😂

Ah yes, Crispin Freeman! He does pop up everywhere. Trina Nishimura is another one. I hear Kurisu everywhere 😅

  6. I posted here before but I started watching a lot more since then. I regularly watch Shadiversity, History Matters, Anton Petrov, PBS Eons and Space Time. I also watch a guy called tjwparso who uploads short clips from old Star Trek episodes. There was account that did the same with old Sailor Moon clips, but seems whoever owns the distribution rights went to town on them and got them removed for copyright sadly.

Huh, not what I was expecting this thread to be about. I expected it to be about how Kenjiro Tsuda seems to voice at least a dozen different characters every year 😂

It's worse if you watch your fair share of dubs like me. I first encountered Kent Williams voicing Mao from DTB. Now he's everywhere - from villains, side heroes, old guys who appear for one episode. He pops up in everything I watch like he's following me around lol. He's the anime version of Alexander Siddig, who manages to crop up in every piece of live action TV I watch

  8. All over the shop. It's been hot this week at about 20C. Now it's about 10C with persistent heavy rain. Global warming is certainly making things interesting. Can't wait for our annual 2 weeks of absolutely scorching weather where all we want to do is spend 14 hours in front of a fan lol

  9. @Wedgy @Ohayotaku Thanks guys, I've sorted it I think. Well, not really, but it's all good. I can still access the site from my other ISP and I've been logged in most of the day. I've opened an Anilist account and copied my MAL list onto it with the downloadable XML, so if I get banned on the other ISP for whatever reason I at least have my list backed up somewhere :)

The discord server makes it clear they don't deal with ban inquiries unforunately. I tried to contact them via the IRC chatroom but their mods seem to be permanently busy or just not online. Having done some searching around on the MAL forums and reddit, it seems like the general view of the community is that the mods are not particularly helpful over there, and a lot of people get banned at random by their spambots. A shame really, because I've always liked the setup and everything.

  10. I woke up this morning to update my MAL account when I get a message saying my account has been IP banned. I have no idea what it is I've supposed to have done! It tells me to go to Rizon and contact a moderator to get the reasons for the ban, how long it will be, etc. I go there to find a bunch of moderators who have either been away since last week or just won't respond to queries. Has anyone had the same thing happen or have any ideas on what I can do?

It's not the end of the world. I have two ISP's in my house so I can still get on the website via the other one, but cautious about accessing my account on it incase they carry the ban over. I just started making some friends on there too :(

  11. I don't mind that tbh. If the story goes that one of the characters die (and it makes sense) then I'm cool with it. All too often writers try to revive popular characters after they've died and it can kill the tension knowing they can just bring anyone back whenever they want! 😅

  12. It was interesting living away at university as me and another of my flat mates both enjoyed anime, but had very different approaches in this regard. I was very open about liking anime straight away, and I knew I was probably going to get some stick for it (and I was right lol). My flat mate on the other hand kept it to himself, even from his girlfriend, which I'm not sure how he managed. In fact, I only found out he was into it because I caught him half watching GITS over my shoulder one day and asked him if he'd seen it, which lead to a convo about all the different anime we'd seen. Perhaps seeing how the rest of the flat teased me about it put him off, but it wasn't that bad and I didn't take any of it to heart. I just learned to join in with the jokes and not take myself too seriously. Then again, I got into anime quite late. Maybe people who've been into it from an earlier age and were bullied more severely through school because of it may have felt differently, which is understandable. My flat mates eventually found out about his anime interests and they told me they respected me more for just been open about it and not being scared to be myself.

Can you even find a player anymore for VHS though?  Also, I’d be afraid of damaging the media.  Players had a habit of eating tapes.

I'm not sure, but I actually still have a VHS player built into one of my old DVD players. Of course, we never use it. In the case of NGE, now Netflix have gained some/all of the rights, I'm hoping they'll be a new DVD/Blu Ray release soon anyway.

One very practical reason is that stuff tends to disappear from streaming sites as licensing agreements change, often with little or no warning.  There also sometimes collector/investment value in owning your own copy.

I like streaming sites to find new material, but anything I like enough for it to have replay value I buy the physical.  Subscribing to every streaming site gets expensive.  Even then you’re not guaranteed to be able to find a given title online when you want to watch it.

As paranoid as this probably sounds, I've always been worried about the dissapearence of the internet because of a solar flare or whatever. I still have an old portable DVD player just in case. That's probably why I like owning physical copies instead of relying on the longeivity of the internet.

I watch most anime on pirate streaming sites these days, but that's mainly since I've been struggling to find employment. I'll probably go for one of Netflix or Crunchyroll again when I have some income.

Kind of like when DVDs came out and you could pick up VHS tapes for a buck each in the clearance bins.

It occurs to me that I might be dating myself with that comment.  👴

Haha! I was about 6/7 when VHS's started going out of fashion. There's still a charm about watching VHS on an old analogue TV you just can't beat. So many memories of watching old kids TV/cartoons on a cold winter morning in 2004/5. I saw someone on Ebay selling the complete collection of Evangelion on VHS a few years ago for about $200 and for a moment, I was tempted!

I remember back when the anime bubble burst, you would find so many anime DVDs for cheap. Given they were single volumes of a series. I remember picking up the entire Kiddy Grade series for like $20. These days I don't really care to buy physical media as much.

I think DVDs will start becoming cheaper now, and Blu Rays probably in a few years too now that media is moving mostly onto digital streaming platforms. I just like owning physical copies of things, though I'm not really sure why. I'm one of those people who'll spend hours in a bookstore looking along the shelves, so maybe that has something to do with it lol
