Thoughts from Valve's "Principle Experimental Psychologist"

Recommended Posts

You know, one of the most intriguing things for me - from a Game Master perspective - about the NerveGear in Sword Art Online was that it could read the mental state of the wearer and communicate that back to the game engine.  Not talking about just the obvious physical I/O here, but the player's emotional state as well.  Imagine giving a save throw modifier based on how emotionally invested the player is in some aspect of the "game".  In one episode of the SAO anime's "Aincrad" arc for instance there's a swordsmith character who really, really wants to make a great sword for a specific special customer.  Imagine the game engine being able to distinguish that mental state from one where the same smith is just building inventory to sell.  Imagine the game being able to tell that the player is aware that they absolutely positively need to make this next bow shot or sword blow count.  The Kayaba Akihiko in me could sure find ways to use that information to ah, enhance my players' game experience.  :) Give me a few minutes and I could probably come up with a whole class of magic/psi use dependent on the emotional state of the individuals wielding it for its effects.  Or how about a Nerve Gear version of something like Soul Eater?  Offhand I can think of several animes where this sort of technology could be put to good(?) use in the game version.

Of course the other side of that same coin is the one exploited by Sugou Nobuyuki (aka "Oberon") in the Alfheim arc to brainwash and control people.  Fortunately things haven't gone that far in real life.  There we (so far) only have to be concerned with the technology being harnessed to do things like maximize micropayment profits...

I'm actually working on something that very vaguely goes into that direction, when it comes to the theoretical emotional part. So there is a bit of a debate about what exactly an emotional state is and is not, but let's just say it always has some distinct physical representation.

My take is that it will not be possible to reliably 'read someone's mind' or mental states because brains are highly individual. There are some important overlaps which can be used but in general it is quite difficult to get detailed/reliable info from it. So by measuring skin conductance, brain waves etc. you might (even now) be able to distinguish between someone who is highly invested in the game or part of it vs. someone who is just doing to to waste some time. But I'm hesitant to say that it will be possible to distinguish between much more detailed decisions, like someone who wants to buy a sword to kill an animal vs a king.

What has been used for quite some time though is designing games in a way to condition people. I had a colleague who went into that direction after graduation and he described it as "adapting the game so that the player is not too challenged or bored" which is quite a positive read. You could also see it as adapting a game in a way to make people as addicted as possible given what we know about general reward functions. So if more advanced technology becomes available (like the VR headset also reading data off your scalp etc) I would definitely see how companies would try and use that to their advantage.

      Senki Zesshou Symphogear

This is one of Japan's top selling anime, with 5 seasons, over the course of the past 7 years. Season 3 was #1 in sales for its season, while season 4 was ALSO #1 in sales for its season. AND season 3 beat ONE PUNCH MAN for the ENTIRE YEAR. And it isn't popular in the absolute bloody slightest outside of Japan.

      I'm confused too, don't worry.

But if you want one of the best hype action shows of the decade, Symphogear is for you. It does damn near everything that people love about shounen action shows, except it does them far better than most actual shounens, despite Symphogear not actually being a shounen.

AND it's a fucking musical. Didn't see that coming, did you.

It ain't cutesy, it lives off of the rule of cool and more or less can't go more than 5 minutes without something exploding or it dies, with music that's about as cool as that whole concept is.

Watch this scene, and witness our beloved main character parry tank shells with her bare fists.

      Watch Order:
Symphogear (a bit rough, don't judge the show based on this season. Still good, just not peak Symphogear.)
Symphogear G (This is where Symphogear actually starts to shine, and it stays that way. A shitty side studio fucked up the first season, so they fired them and swapped out 90% of the staff and you're left with a season that's vastly superior to the first in absolutely every god damn way you could ever expect. Get. To. This. Season.)
Symphogear GX (It got even prettier.)
Symphogear AXZ (The animation got better.)
Symphogear XV (Airing right now, and is really turning out to be a proper culmination and finale of 7 years of a franchise.)

      OOOOO

Now that you've been so heartily informed of the best show ever, I'd love to hear what any of you think of it. First impressions based on this thread maybe, or impressions from you going to watch it! It's my favourite show by a mile, so I assure you I'm more than willing to chat your ear off about it, and if you aren't impressed by it... well, leave it to me

If you’ve been following my recent posts, you’ll know this series has become one of my obsessions.
The premise is that eight teenagers, (each specializing in a particular genre of online gaming) are abducted and forced to complete a series of challenges which are streamed live. Their masked host informs that they will remain trapped until they can accumulate 100 million views.
The things that stand out immediately are the weird setting where realistically impossible things happen frequently and the smart-alecky banter between the characters (kinda like Haruhi Suzimiya). While the initial impression of the series is comedic, the more it progresses the more mystery, suspense & psychological it becomes. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the various characters have their own secrets and in at least one case it makes him/her potentially dangerous.
I realize that this series is under most people’s radar. But I think @Castigear has watched a couple episodes & @LonelyPoet mentioned the manga it is based on. I thought I would see if there’s enough interest to justify a discussion or at least recommend checking it out to my fellow forum members because I’m enjoying it a lot. Here in the US you can find the dub on Funimation (the version I’m following) and the subtitled version on Hulu. Let me know what you think.

Hello all, MTGA (Magic the Gathering Arena) is one of my all-time favorite games. Sadly however, there is no good option for finding matches with your friends, in fact you're invites to matches do not even get seen if the other person does not also invite the sender. It is because of this problem I thought I would make this thread, so us MTGA players can coordinate our matches better and not just fight randoms all day.
Thread Rules: If you post please post your MTGA profile name and code, for example mine is: LILDOOP#62084 (THIS IS NOT YOUR PASSWORD)
You can view your profile name and code by going to your profile page when logged into MTGA fyi.

This thread is for anything MTGA related, so you can post cool decks you have made or ideas for decks. You can, once you have given your code out request matches with other players who have done the same and discuss times you will be on. You can talk about lore or make up your own card ideas, really anything MTGA related. So yea, this is like a little club but not in club form because I already belong to 4 clubs.

Btw, here (below) are some card ideas I made (tell me your thoughts?).

      Davriel, Malignant Copyist
Card Type: Legendary Planeswalker -Human (Mythic Rare)
If your opponent has exiled more than 15 cards you have hexproof and Davriel, Malignant Copyist gains 1 extra loyalty counter per turn. When Davriel, Malignant Copyist dies exile it.
+1 Target player exiles the top two cards of their library.
-6 Opponent loses health equal to the amount of cards in their exile.
-X You may play any number of opponents exiled cards without paying their mana cost. Creature cards played this way go into exile upon death.
      Starting Loyalty counter: 3
Mana Cost: 2 Swamps +4 swamps (or) Islands.

      Garruk, Walkers Bane
Card Type: Legendary Planeswalker -Human (Mythic Rare)
Beasts you control enter the battlefield with +1/1 counters.
+2 Place a 2/2 black and green beast creature token with vigilance onto the battlefield. Beast has: "Pay 1, creature gains your choice of either death-touch or trample until end of turn.
-6  For every land you control put a +1/1 counter on all non token beasts you control. For every swamp you control deal 1 damage to all opponents creatures.
-8 Destroy any number of target planeswalkers then exile them. If you destroy Garruk, Walkers Bane this way transform it.
      Starting Loyalty counter:  3
Mana Cost: 4 (no color) +2 green, +2 black
      Transformed = Garruk, hateful hunter
      Card type: Legendary creature -Human
      Stats: 10/5
      Traits: Indestructible
Garruk, hateful hunter has indestructible as long as it is attacking if your opponent has at least 1 planeswalker card in exile.
Whenever Garruk, Hateful hunter is dealt damage sacrifice a beast. Whenever Garruk deals damage to target player or planeswalker proliferate.
Pay 7, sacrifice Garruk, Hateful hunter and put Garruk, Walkers Bane into your library third from the top.

      Ob Nixilis, the Profaned
Card Type: Legendary Planeswalker -Demon (Mythic Rare)
Whenever an instant, sorcery or triggered ability causes an opponent to lose life you gain life equal to 2x the life lost.
+1 Look at the top three cards of your library, choose an instant or sorcery card from among them and play it without paying its mana cost. If no instant or sorcery spells were used deal 2 damage to target player.
-X Take control of any amount of target creatures. The creatures gain haste until end of turn. At the end of your turn destroy all stolen creatures and put a loyalty counter on Ob Nixilus, the Profaned for each creature destroyed this way. Lose life equal to the creature's power and toughness combined; if you die this way transform Ob Nixilus, The Profaned, his power becomes your health.
-8 Place all the God Eternal's onto the battlefield tapped.
      Starting Loyaty counter: 5
      Mana Cost: 2 red, +2 black,+2 green, +2 blue, +2 white
Transformed = Ob Nixilus, Devourer of Souls

Hello! I'm Kay but I also go by Blue in some places, like Discord. I actually go by both names there, too, lmao.
      ANYWAY
I enjoy anime, as I'm sure you can guess because I'm here. I also enjoy video games and roleplaying (mostly on Discord or Tumblr). I'm a female so I prefer she/her based pronouns. I'm not too picky about it, however, but yeah. When it comes to anime, I sort of prefer the action/adventure ones with a comedic edge and an unearthly vibe to it, like magic or demons. Just something that isn't purely normal human stuff. With games, I have the same preference and love open world types, such as the infamous Elder Scrolls or Fable.
That's it about me for now. As I get to know you guys, I'll likely reveal more about me! ^-^
