For me it is mostly entertainment. Entertainment and relaxation is necessary for mental health. As long as it doesn’t turn into escapism or obsession and take over your life then that’s a good thing.
One of the things I look for in things like anime or books or movies is a good story based in reality - actual physics and realistic political and social expectations - that nevertheless manages to portray a positive outcome of some sort. At their best such stories can even inspire people to make them happen in real life. Even if it is a grim story of power and corruption gaining an upper hand it can have a “good” outcome if it informs you on a topic or provides an actionable warning that keeps you out of trouble.
Not everything is like that of course. As Sturgeon said, 90% of everything is crap. But if you seek out and focus on the other 10%, that tithe can make up for it and even be net positive, both on a personal and societal level.
