  1. It's bright and sunny and currently 28C (82F). It's recycling collection day today so I went out to retrieve my, now empty, boxes and found it really hot out so I grabbed my boxes and retreated back indoors. Any thoughts of cutting the lawn today have been thoroughly discarded.
  2. I agree. While I was paid a decent wage for my job the pay wasn't fantastic, but it was a job I enjoyed doing, so much so that I did it for 48 years. While the investigations into the cause of the two fires here are still ongoing a contributing factor in some recent tower block fires has been that the external cladding installed to improve the appearance of the tower block has been found to be inflammable once the fire reaches a certain temperature.
  3. Contrary to common belief, Common Sense is anything but common and far too many people lack it.
  4. Ah, so now we know why sloths are generally solitary animals, they have a serious bad breath problem!
  5. At 98F humidity in the 100s I'd cease functioning and collapse in a heap somewhere!. Don't forget to stay hydrated and drink lots of water and I hope you don't end up with a migraine.
  6. Paying 100K a year for tuition will definitely concentrate the mind on studying. Best wishes for the new term I hope you settle in OK at the new school . Well done for those A's, I didn't get an A for anything. Being made to walk a mile in 95 degree heat is just cruel. There's been a couple of serious tower block fires in London recently, one of which has apparently left a lot of people homeless. I'm not sure how I'd cope if something like that happened to me. Having a job you enjoy doing is a very big plus! I had the good fortune to have a job I liked doing, even if it wasn't the one I intended to do! I've known a few people who really hated their job and had to struggle to make the effort to go in each day.
  7. This morning I did some gardening and while I was clearing the weeds out of one of the flowerbeds I realised I was being watched, and there about two feet away was a robin. I stopped work and just sat very still and watched this beautiful little bird, which at one point came within 18 inches of where I was sitting. It was an almost magical experience being so close to such a lovely little bird.
  8. I'll look forward to seeing those. I found when I was at school that things got harder each year. Sleeping in class was a very dangerous thing to do, back in the 1960s and the cane was still very much in use
  9. I've never been down a coal mine and don't know much about coal mining, but any mining can be dangerous. I have been into a slate mine and learnt quite a bit about the methods of extracting slate and the conditions the miners worked in were both hard and dangerous, the usual method being to use explosives to bring down a load of slate and then collect up the pieces and hope you didn't use too big a charge and bring down the roof of the area you were working in.
  10. Yes, I'd heard that one from somewhere. It's interesting, and slightly worrying, how many trades used dangerous substances on a regular basis without really knowing or considering the dangers they posed.
