Elevators, or lifts as we call them, don't bother me in fact I like then because my legs don't like walking up stairs any more. Escalators are interesting whether you like them or not depends a lot on their pitch and how long the approach is before you reach the part that escalates. The ones that I dislike most are the ones in shops which are often quite steep and have short run-ins so you can see the bottom before you step on them and if you don't like heights, like me, these ones can be scarry to ride especially in the downward direction. Generally the escalators on the London Underground are a shallower pitch and have a long enough run-in so you can't see the bottom when you step on them.

Fun Fact: The longest escalator on the London Underground has a rise of 90 feet and is 200 feet long.

The world's scariest type of lift is the Paternoster, they have no doors and never stop moving  so you have to jump in and jump out when you reach the floor you want. They've been banned in the UK over heath and safety concerns. I've seen one, but never had the courage to use it.

Lifts, or elevators if you prefer, have multiple safety features to prevent them from crashing to the ground.

I have some deep fear in me that the escalator will suck me under because my mom used to tell me it would when I would try to sit on them ( ̄□ ̄;)
I don't think I ever want to ride Paternoster this sounds awfully terrifying too (゜ ロ゜) I would be afraid it would chop me in half.

Sitting down on an escalator isn't really a good idea. They won't suck you in if you sit on them, but your skirt could get trapped in the treads.

My local hospital had a paternoster and I used to watch it whenever I went there, I thought it a very scary thing and never used it. If you timed your entry or exit wrong you could do yourself a nasty injury, which is why they were banned.

I was worried I was stuck in an elevator today and had an experience where the door wouldn't open for about 20 seconds 😆 In that time I was thinking the worst.

It's amazing how long 20 seconds is when you're waiting for something 😁

Especially if you're waiting for what could be your doom ╚(•⌂•)╝ I would have had a heart attack and a stroke in that 20 seconds.

I don't think too much about it when I get on a lift I guess I assume they are fairly safe since you rarely ever hear about an accident involving one.

I'm with you there in that I just don't think too much about it. They aren't part of my every day life since I don't have one in the one story building I work at and I certainly don't have one in my home 😂 the only time I encounter them in the wild for the most part would be when we're traveling and staying in a hotel of some sort or at the airport. I believe they have them at the local mall but I usually use the escalator there.

Just to spice this topic up a bit. There are three railway stations London that have inclined elevators, they're like ordinary elevators but they travel diagonally rarther than vertically. They're great fun to ride.

Yes, they totally exist. Here's a pic taken from inside the one at Farringdon Street looking down the incline. The great advantage of them is that they can be installed alongside an escalator and have the same start and finish points.

I don't think riding these would make me feel any better about elevators in the least 😆

It certainly feels a bit different to riding a normal elevator.

Yes, it was a bit, but it's an enclosed car so there's no danger that you'd fall out.

What I found really scary was a couple of years back when I rode the Lynton & Lynmouth cliff railway  and to get a god shot of the ride I went out onto the open veranda, camcorder in one hand other hand locked very firmly on the railings. But it was worth it I got some great footage. 😁

NOPEEEE COULDN'T BE ME LOL ~ I think I would get terrified which is weird because I really didn't use to be scared of heights the way I am now. I get scared on the balcony sometimes, I'm getting better at it but just heights freak me out anymore. Wondering how I'd do on a ski lift now because I used to ride them a lot when I was younger and enjoyed it but I think I'd be scared to death now xD

It a funicular so it's at a very steep angle tbh I was surprised to be allowed on the balcony with the driver let alone actually being invited to go out on it. I'm not sure if I'd do it again though.

Balconies also usually have a slight slope to them for drainage. You can’t see it so much, but sometimes you can really feel it, depending on the balcony. The little bit of slope might be making the balcony feel even scarier for you without you even realizing it.

I don't think I could go out onto a balcony especially if it was one of those that was open on three sides.

Not sure if that's it or not ~  Usually for me it's the fact that I suddenly remember I'm 17 floors in the air and maybe this could fall even though it probably won't and that's actually rare to happen based on what I've searched up xD It happens to me on bridges or the roof, which our roof has glass walls around it and all that up there and I still get a lil scared getting too close lol and I definitely cannot go on the glass balcony thing they have in our sky deck lounge @.@ nopeee nope

It often is the sudden realisation of how high up you are that does it.  I would NEVER want to walk on those glass floored things, I don't even like going on those metal open lattice walkways you find in some places.

I don't like those glass balconies either and not fond of glass elevators.
